Spinning houses and talking birds. Whispered secrets and borrowed hope. Here are new stories sewn from old skins, gathered from around the world by visionary editor Kate Bernheimer and inspired by everything from Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Snow Queen' and 'The Little Match Girl' to Charles Perrault's 'Bluebeard' and 'Cinderella' to the Brothers Grimm's 'Hansel and Gretel' and 'Rumpelstiltskin' to fairy tales by Goethe and Calvino. Fairy tales are our oldest literary tradition, and yet they chart the imaginative frontiers of the twenty-first century as powerfully as they evoke our earliest encounters with literature. About this Item: Chrysalis Children's Books, 1994. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Dust jacket complete, unclipped, slight wear to edges. Red cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownersip marks. Numerous colour illustrations. 142 pages clean and tight. Product Dimensions: 27.6 x 20 x 2.2 cm. The appeal of a well-told fairy tale can be virtually limitless: it can excite, terrify, enlighten, surprise, amuse and, above all, enthrall both adult and child. In this personal selection of twenty two fairy tales from around the world Michael Foreman has chosen stories which give all these pleasures, and more. He has cast his net wide - around both the familiar and lesser known tales of Russia, China, India, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Australia, England, Ireland and Mexico - and introduces the reader to lands peopled by gods and goddesses, giants, monsters, princesses, dragons, and to the richly allegorical animal kingdom. Here is the moral tale of the know-it-all herring who comes to a rather undignified end; the mythical tale of how China's four great rivers were formed, thanks to the actions of four kindly dragons; the fantastical tale of a Japanese warrior's battle against an unspeakably terrifying centipede; the richly comical tale of the Irish giant who outwits his Scottish rival by dressing up as a baby. Leaping across the pages of this delightful collection are well-loved characters from the pens of Hans Christian Andersen and the Brothers Grimm, and from those, such as Edna O'Brien and Terry Jones, who have so skilfully followed in their fairy tale footsteps, all brought vibrantly to life by Michael Foreman's bold use of colour and his strikingly fluent forms. He has travelled thousands of miles, sometimes in the company of the storytellers themselves, in order to capture the very essence of each of his chosen, and distinctive, cultures. The result is a book full of visual and verbal magic, a veritable tapestry of delight. Size: Sm 4to. Seller Inventory # 138512

About this Item: Oxford University Press, London, 1974. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 2nd Printing. 255 pp, 10" H. Colour and b&w illustrations. "In this book twenty-four of the best-known tales are given in their original form, either as they were first printed in English, or in their earliest surviving text. Each tale has a historical introduction, showing the development of the story and noting particular points of interest. Was Cinderella's shoe really a glass slipper or was it made of fur? Was Red Ridinghood devoured by the wolf, or was she saved? How did the old woman in Southey's version of 'The Three Bears' become the Goldilocks we know today? In a general introduction Iona and Peter Opie look at the realism as well as the enchantment in the tales, and put into perspective the contributions of Per-rault, the Grimm brothers, and Hans Christian Andersen. The book contains 150 illustrations, over 40 in colour, by famous illustrators such as Walter Crane, George Cruickshank, Gustave Dore, Kate Green-away, Arthur Rackham, W. Heath Robinson, and Rex Whistler." Contents: Introduction; The History of Tom Thumb; Jack the Giant Killer; The Yellow Dwarf; Sleeping Beauty; Little Red Ridinghood; Diamonds and Toads; Bluebeard; Puss in Boots; Cinderella; Hop o' my Thumb; Beauty and the Beast; The Three Wishes; The Three Heads in the Well; Jack and the Beanstalk; Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs; The Frog Prince; The Twelve Dancing Princesses; Rumpelstiltskin; Goldilocks and the Three Bears; The Tinder Box; The Princess and the Pea; Thumbelina; The Swineherd; Hansel and Gretel; Chief Commentaries Consulted; Sources of the Illustrations; Index. Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket is price clipped, has minor edge wear, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny dent on front hinge, minor browning on inside edges. Spine with black title: "Merry Suffolk", carefully repaired (affecting the 'K' of Suffolk). Rusted staples. Clean English text throughout. Curiously there are many mis-prints corrected in pencil. Possibly this was a pre-production issue? G+. ** " Lois Anne Fison (1829-1904) was a noted 19th century author on Suffolk folklore and anecdotes, which she collected directly from the Suffolk people. She was particularly keen on using the Suffolk dialect in her writings which sometimes rendered her stories a little difficult for younger readers. Her best known books on Suffolk are probably Merry Suffolk; Master Archie and other tales; a book of folk-lore (London: Jarrold & Sons, 1899) which includes the Tale of Tom Tit Tot (the Suffolk version of Grimmís tale of "Rumpelstiltskin"), and Uncle Mike: an old Suffolk Fairy Tale (London: Jarrold & Sons, 1893). The latter is a traditional story of a little fairy told in a Suffolk dialect. It was apparently related to the children of the family by their nurse. Spinning Days and Olden Ways: A Suffolk Story (Ipswich: Smiths Suitall, 1904) is another of her books on the traditions of the county. Lois was born at Barningham, Suffolk, England, one of of twenty children of Thomas Fison, a prosperous landowner and farmer. Her younger brother, the Rev. Lorimer Fison (1832-1907), emigrated to Australia where he became a Wesleyan minister in Fiji, and an eminent anthropologist and journalist." - See Planet Suffolk . ***Mrs Anna Walter Thomas was Lois' sister. In 1871 Anna Fison married Rev. Walter Thomas and moved to Bangor. Seller Inventory # 43209

About this Item: London and Philadelphia: William Heinemann and J.B. Lippincott Co., 1916, 1916. The Deluxe Edition"How Beautiful I Think Your Illustrations"One of Three Over-Copies"[RACKHAM, Arthur, illustrator]. The Allies' Fairy Book. With an introduction by Edmund Gosse C.B. and illustrations by Arthur Rackham. London: William Heinemann, [n.d., 1916].Edition DeLuxe Limited to 525 numbered copies signed by the artist, this being "one of three over-copies". Quarto (9 11/16 x 7 3/8 inches; 246 x 187 mm.). xxii, 121, [1], [4, blank] pp. Twelve color plates mounted on heavy brown paper, with descriptive tissue guards printed in red, and twenty-four drawings in black and white. Publisher's blue buckram, front cover and spine pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt, decorative end-papers, top edge gilt, others uncut. Corners slightly bumped, covers a little soiled, otherwise an excellent copy.Three of the tipped-in color plates (frontispiece, facing p. 18 & p.94 have white borders and are from the smaller format first trade edition. The most probable explanation is that the publisher decided to bind up this "one of three over-copies" but was short of three of the color plates which they substituted with the smaller ones from the trade edition."His book for 1916, The Allies' Fairy Book, published by Heinemann as a contribution to the mood of patriotism and cooperation between the Allies, is likewise composed of images that thrill and inspire, but do not terrify. Where in Grimm, Rackham happily includes illustrations of people battering each other to death or hanging by the hair and caught in brambles alive or half dead, this kind of image is not dwelt upon in The Allies' Fairy Book. even though some of the stories are as red in tooth and claw as any of their type and certainly would have allowed a violent interpretation. Reports coming back from the Front, eye-witness accounts of devastation, violation and butchery, were quite enough to suggest to Rackham and his publishers that at this time the Allies could be spared violent images with their family reading at home." (Hamilton, Arthur Rackham. p. 109)."When The Allies' Fairy Book was published, [Edmund] Gosse wrote to Rackham (6th November 1916): 'Will you think me impertinent if I tell you how beautiful I think your illustrations. their variety, and ingenuity, and the delicacy of your fancy, and the romantic ardour of your mind, were never so humble a degree - in a work so charming'" (Hudson, p. 104).The tales, from their nation of origin, include: English: Jack the Giant-KillerScottish: The Battle of the BirdsWelsh: Lludd and LlevelysIrish: GuleeshFrench: The Sleeping BeautyItalian: Cesarino and The DragonPortuguese: What Came of Picking FlowersJapanese: The Adventures of Little Peachling, The Fox's Wedding and The Tongue-cut SparrowRussian: FrostSerbian: The Golden Apple-tree and The Nine Pea HensBelgium: The Last Adventure of Thyl UlenspiegelLatimore and Haskell, pp. 45-46. However, it does contain decorative title border, head- and tail-piece vignettes, and initials not found in the English edition.Danish illustrator and designer Kay Nielsen (1886-1957) "was drawn early on to fairy tales and illustrated many volumes for Hodder & Stoughton: In Powder and Crinoline (1913), East of the Sun, West of the Moon (1914), Hans Andersen's Fairy Tales (drawings completed in 1912, but first published in 1924), Hansel and Gretel (1925), and Red Magic (Jonathan Cape, 1930), a collections of fairy tales from around the world. Nielsen's designs unite strong linearity with delicate colouring?Characterized by a sense of two-dimensional flatness, Nielsen's objects and people are highly stylized: foxglove blossoms hang in measured asymmetry; princes and princesses stand on improbably long legs; and their garments billow in gravity-defying parabolas. The power of his illustrations lies in his uncanny ability to retrieve a story's emotional effect on its reader and to recreate it visually in two dimensions" (The Oxford Companion to Fairy Tales). First published, London: D. Bogue / Routledge, Warne & Routledge, [1853], [1854], [1854], [1864]. Cruikshank was already a distinguished caricaturist and illustrator of books for children and adults when he produced this work. His illustrations for the first English translation of Grimm's Fairy Tales were praised widely, but his own rewriting of the fairy tales was criticized, most prominently by Charles Dickens. This was not due to the quality of the illustrations, but because, in line with his temperance beliefs, Cruikshank rewrote aspects of the fairy tales to warn the reader against the evils of alcohol.
