About this Item: Cambridge Library Collection, United Kingdom, 2011. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Widely acknowledged as the most authoritative Victorian study of ancient Greece, George Grote s twelve-volume work, begun in 1846, established the view of Greek history which still prevails in textbooks and popular accounts of the ancient world today. Grote employs direct and clear language to take the reader from the earliest times of legendary Greece to the death of Alexander and his generation, drawing upon epic poetry and legend, and examining the growth and decline of the Athenian democracy. The work explains Greek political constitutions and philosophy, and interwoven throughout are the important but outlying adventures of the Sicilian and Italian Greeks. John Stuart Mill said of Grote that his familiarity both with the great highways and the obscurest bypaths of Grecian literature and antiquity, has seldom been equalled , and the book remains required reading for historians and students of ancient Greece and Greek philosophy. About this Item: John Murray,, London:, 1849. Navy Morocco Gilt. Condition: Near Fine. Near Fine. Mixed Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. "George Grote was one of the most remarkable minds of the early Victorian age. But although he has never been forgotten, other Victorian intellectuals less wise than he, less strong in judgment, more erratic, more colourful and perhaps more imaginative, have enjoyed a fame and a following that he has never quite achieved. This is partly because he sought to be a scholar rather than a sage, partly because his work has not been easily accessible. Routledge’s reissue of an Edwardian abridgment of his 12-volume History of Greece, prefaced with an illuminating new introduction by Paul Cartledge, provides the best chance that there is likely to be of bringing him to a modern readership." London Review of Books. This famous history of Greece is beautifully bound in 1/2 navy morocco over navy boards with five spine compartments and 4 gilt raised bands. There is some very scattered, minor underscoring under less than a dozen lines of text in the table of contents of the first 3 volumes. Otherwise this is a clean and beautiful set. About this Item: John Murray. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. [Set09] London, 1846-1856. A complete first edition set of Grote's important work, complete in twelve volumes. Full polished calf bindings by Bickers and Son. Includes a manuscript letter from Grote regretfully declining an invitation to a luncheon. "Although as biased as Macaulay's History of England, and less scholarly than Mommsen's Roman History, Grote's History of Greece can be bracketed with these two works. Like them, it was received with universal acclimation. (It) shaped the European conception of the subject matter throughout the nineteenth century , and still merits respect as a monument of industrious Victorian scholarship." - Printing and the Mind of Man. A very good set with generally excellent contents, though there is some intermittent foxing especially at prelims and title pages. Nineteenth century bookplates on front pastedowns. Partial chip to label of spine on Vol. I, some chips to heads of spine of Vols. X and XII, some normal shelfwear, three white spots to top edge of pages of Vol. XI. Folding maps present at rear of Vols. I and II, with a marginal tear of about 2-3 inches to first map where it is attached, otherwise maps in excellent condition. Very good condition overall, quite sound and attractive. Seller Inventory # SKU1000052
