About this Item: D. Appleton-Century, New York, 1938. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Paul Laune (illustrator). 1st Edition. First Edition (Appleton '(1)' on the last page). 'Pigman' is an unusual name. Probably helps to toughen up a person. But more importantly, who out there has an Augustus Pigman signed book? No one, as far as I can see. It appears that he wrote two books, at least two are for sale on the Internet, though there are only a few of those. You can get a look at this book from the photographs I've provided. The blue covers are clean, but do have color fading at the margins of both the front and back as well as on the spine. The corners have small spots of rub-through. The edges look pretty good. The silver lettering on the spine has held up. There is slight fraying at the top edge of the spine and little color loss at the bottom edge of the spine. The book is square and straight. It is very solidly bound from beginning to end. No binding issues at all. The pages have the typical age toning, not bad. They are exceptionally clean. In fact, scrolling through, I didn't see any soiling at all. They are also in very nice condition, meaning they are not creased, there are no dogeared corners. The book is also free of markings. There are no attachments. And with the exception of the author's signed inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in this book. There are many black and white illustrations, including a frontispiece. They are all drawings by Paul Laune. There's little bit about him: 'Paul Sidney Laune was an author, painter and illustrator, known for his book covers and for paintings he did of rural Western U.S. pioneer scenes. He covered pioneers, ranch-life, and quarter horses in his paintings. He painted five murals for the Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum in his hometown of Woodward, Oklahoma. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, Laune worked as an illustrator and art critic in New York. He also lived in Phoenix, Arizona, where he drew quarter horses and wrote a book on them. Among the more famous works he illustrated, were books in the Hardy Boys Mystery Series. When I googled the editor, Alice V. Keliher, a New York Times obituary came up. I'm not sure that it's the same person. I wouldn't think there are a lot of Alice V. Keliher's about. Anyway, this Alice authored a few of her own books (including one for the same publisher, D. Appleton-Century ) and was 'a renowned expert on early childhood education. In the 1930's, she conducted seminal research on childhood development with Arnold Gesell at Yale University. He was also a close friend of Eleanor Roosevelt's. She helped several Jewish families escape from Germany and Austria in the late 1930's. Her lawyer said the enterprise was organized by the love of her life, a shadowy American intelligence agent whose death in World War II led Miss Keliher to vow to remain unmarried. A longtime professor of education at New York University, Miss Keliher cherished her unofficial title as the "grandmother of day care." She was also known to drink at least eight glasses of water a day. A short review from 'Spring Books of 1938' states: 'A Story Of Water is a story of water in the everyday life of man, and shows how the methods of getting water parallel the development of civilization. Exceedingly interesting both in material and treatment.' The chapters in this book examine Water for the Cave People, Water for the Herd People, Water for Ancient Egypt, Water for the Cities of the Roman Empire, Water in the Middle Ages, and Water in Modern Times (which in this case would've been the late 1930s. "Howard Pease (September 6, 1894–April 14, 1974) was an American writer of adventure stories from Stockton, California. He wrote his first novel, The Gypsy Caravan, in the early 1920s, although it was not published until 1930, when it became his fourth published novel. His first published novel was The Tattooed Man, based on two of his voyages and on a walking trip he took along the south coast of France from Marseilles to Italy; it appeared in 1926, and introduced Tod Moran, a young merchant mariner who is the protagonist in most of Pease's novels, working his way up from wiper to first mate as the novels – sometimes referred to as "the Tod Moran mysteries" – progress." ; Signed by Author.
