Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. This copy is in new, unmarked condition bound in grey cloth covered boards with bright gilt titling to the spine. This copy is bright, tight, white and square. The unclipped dust wrapper is in new condition. This copy has been signed by both authors on the half title and dedicated to Barry Whatton, noted in the acknowledgments as an assistant to the compilers. International postal rates are calculated on a book weighing 1 Kilo, in cases where the book weighs more than 1 Kilo increased postal rates will be quoted, where the book weighs less then postage will be reduced accordingly. The last in a popular series on movie stars in the military, this handsome book provides readers with a guide to film actors of many nations who served in various branches of their own military forces. Because they appeared in Hollywood movies, many of these figures will be familiar to Americans. A few even won Oscars. Others worked closer to home but are still readily recognizable. Most of them date their service to World War II, and the preponderance is British. Among the more than sixty stars featured are the British actors Richard Attenborough, Richard Burton, Michael Caine, Royal Navy gunner Sean Connery, Alex Guinness, Rex Harrison, Anthony Hopkins (who spent a year with the Royal Artillery during the Cold War), Ray Milland, Roger Moore (a first lieutenant with the Royal Army in occupied West Germany after World War II), David Niven, Michael Rennie, and Peter Ustinov. Those from Canada include Lorne Greene, Raymond Massey, and Walter Pidgeon. The Frenchmen include Maurice Chevalier and Charles Boyer. Also featured are Laurence Harvey of South Africa, Peter Finch of Australia, Oskar Werner of Germany, Toshiro Mifune of Japan, and Audrey Hepburn, who as a child was a courier for World War II resistance fighters in Holland. He was trained as a shoemaker and eventually settled in Banff, where he devoted his leisure time to the study of animal nature, and collected numerous specimens of animals, which he stuffed and exhibited, but with monetary loss. Samuel Smiles, his biographer, describes him as "one of those men who lived for science, not by science." / Samuel Smiles wrote several biographical works (many are engineers or men of science), all given with lots of details. He wrote of George & Robert Stephenson, James Brindley, Sir Cornelius Vermuyden, Sir Hugh Myddleton, Capt. John Perry, John Smeaton, John Rennie (1761â"1821), John Metcalf, Thomas Telford, Boulton and Watt, Andrew Yarranton, Benjamin Huntsman, Dud Dudley, Henry Maudslay, Joseph Clement, George Moore, Robert Dick, Phineas Pett, Francis Pettit Smith, John Harrison, John Lombe, William Murdoch, Frederick Koenig, The Walter family of The Times, William Clowes, Charles Bianconi, James Nasmyth, Josiah Wedgwood, and Thomas Edwards. / "Selections from the fauna of Banffshire, by Thomas Edward": p. [337]-390 (mammals, birds, fishes, crustacea). / PROVENANCE: Henry C. King (1915-2005), signed in Slough, U.K. When he came to Slough, Henry C. King gained access to the Herschel library. Earlier, and apparently, one Matthew H. Nisbet had the titles of L.D.S. and F.P.S., earning a license in dental surgery, and a Fellow of the Pharmaceutical Society. This copy could be inscribed to him.

Februar 1908 in Posen; ? 22. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. xv, [1], 413, [3] p. Illustrations. Where Are They Now? Bibliography. Notes. Index. Inscription signed by the author is on t-p. Inscription reads With warm wishes to Susan & Neil Roger Mudd. Minor page wear. DJ has slight wear and soiling. Roger Harrison Mudd (February 9, 1928 - March 9, 2021) was an American broadcast journalist who was a correspondent and anchor for CBS News and NBC News. He also worked as the primary anchor for The History Channel. Previously, Mudd was weekend and weekday substitute anchor for the CBS Evening News, the co-anchor of the weekday NBC Nightly News, and the host of the NBC-TV Meet the Press and American Almanac TV programs. Mudd was the recipient of the Peabody Award, the Joan Shorenstein Award for Distinguished Washington Reporting, and five Emmy Awards. In 1980, after being turned down in favor of Dan Rather to succeed Cronkite as weeknight anchor of the CBS Evening News, Mudd chose to leave CBS News and accepted an offer to join NBC News. He co-anchored NBC Nightly News from April 1982 until September 1983, when Tom Brokaw took over as sole anchor. From 1984 to 1985, he was co-moderator of NBC's Meet the Press with Marvin Kalb, and later served as co-anchor with Connie Chung on two NBC news magazines, American Almanac and 1986. From 1987 to 1992, Mudd was an essayist and political correspondent with the MacNeil Lehrer Newshour on PBS. He retired from full-time broadcasting in 2004, Mudd's The Place to Be: Washington, CBS, and the Glory Days of Television News, was released on March 24, 2008. Derived from a Kirkus review: Veteran TV newsman Mudd engrossingly dissects the coming of age of television news, as experienced at the best and brightest shop. His memoir of the "golden age" of CBS News's Washington bureauâ"perhaps not coincidentally coinciding with Mudd's 1960s-'70s tenure thereâ"takes a lively and gratifyingly candid look back at a pre-CNN, pre-Internet, pre-cell phone media struggling to decode the strange signs and customs of the U.S. government. Revered as the House that Murrow Built, CBS News attracted an astonishing number of driven, talented journalists with a nearly religious zeal for beating the competition and creating the best possible broadcast. Mudd covered the congressional beat, earning a reputation as a hard-nosed, somewhat irreverent, prickly perfectionist. He was deemed Walter Cronkite's heir apparent at the anchor desk, and more than 25 years after losing that seat to sometime friend and professional nemesis Dan Rather, his bitterness is still palpable. Mudd paints an illuminating portrait of Rather as talented, ruthlessly ambitious, calculating and fatally eager for the big scoop at the expense of journalistic probity and his own credibility. Equally sharp are sketches revealing Cronkite's high standards; Eric Sevareid's brilliance and difficult personality; Connie Chung's remarkable pluck; etc. Mudd's aim is to show the type of personâ"tightly wound, obsessive and possessed of a healthy egoâ"that made possible CBS News's many journalistic coups. His insightful reminiscences of covering the Kennedy assassination, Watergate and the civil-rights movement bring a fresh insider's perspective to these events. Also engaging are Mudd's takes on lesser-known stories, rich in period detail and crackling with the urgency of deadlines and the need to prove one's self anew every day. Brisk, brusque and surprisingly wittyâ"a must for students of politics and entertainment. First edition. First edition. Third printing [stated].

Hardcover. Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. Walter Harper (Jacket Design) (illustrator). First Printing [Stated]. [2], 299, [3] pages. Illustrations. Inscribed by the author on fep. Henry Morgan (born Henry Lerner Van Ost Jr.; March 31, 1915 - May 19, 1994) was an American humorist. He is remembered best in two modern media: radio, on which he first became familiar as a barbed but often self-deprecating satirist; and television, where he was a regular and cantankerous panelist for the game show I've Got a Secret. Morgan made one movie in which he had the lead role, producer Stanley Kramer's sophisticated comedy So This Is New York (1948). In 1949, NBC television gave him his own show, The Henry Morgan Show. Morgan's longest-lasting television image was struck in June 1952, when he was invited to join I've Got a Secret, produced by game show giants Mark Goodson and Bill Todman. Morgan's tenure on the show was marked by his periodic complaints about the (allegedly) horrid conditions in which he had to work, in between firing questions at the show's guests with the secrets. Morgan's mordant wit played well against the upbeat personalities of the other panelists, and producer Allan Sherman would deliberately stage elaborate "secrets" involving Morgan personally. Always known as much for his sarcastic grouchiness as his barbed self-deprecation, Morgan's 1994 memoir, Here's Morgan! The Original Bad Boy of Broadcasting, found him satirizing many of his former co-stars while straining not to examine his professional life beyond a series of in-and-out zaps, asides, and declarative statements-almost as if the reader were listening to a vintage radio satire of Morgan's life. This includes an Obituary written by the author while alive!

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. AINSWORTH, William Harrison. Autograph letter signed to John Partington Aston, discussing legal studies, politics, and urging him to complete 'the Tale' [London, c.1825]. 7pp. closely written on two bifolia, black ink, signed. Addressed to John Partington Aston, docketed, with traces of seal. Old folds, a couple of small puncture holes caused by them, some toning, a stain and handling wear, but a very good, complete letter. An unusually long and substantial early letter from William Harrison Ainsworth (1805-1882), then about twenty years old, to his close friend and literary collaborator John Partington Aston (1805-1854), clerk in his father's Manchester law office and soon to be co-author with Ainsworth of Sir John Chiverton (1826). The letter is steeped in the concerns of a young, articled clerk: Ainsworth describes his weary struggles with legal tome Blackstone and Herbert on Ejectments, reflects on opinions in civil and common law, and reports legal and political news. Yet amidst the legal grind runs a more revealing note: he urges Aston to press on with 'the Tale' - almost certainly the joint project that became Sir John Chiverton, the historical romance published the following year and praised by Walter Scott. There are glimpses too of his wider circle and cultural life: mentions of the Curran family, Aston's brothers, and theatrical news from Drury Lane (Kean and Don Giovanni). Most surviving Ainsworth correspondence is from later along in his life. This example, stretching over seven pages shows the early formation of his partnership with Aston, with Ainsworth as a young man and at the beginnings of his career as a novelist.   .
