Arthur Penrhyn Stanley (13 December 1815 18 July 1881) was an English churchman, Dean of Westminster, known as Dean Stanley. His position was that of a Broad Churchman and he was the author of works on Church History. His tenure of the deanery of Westminster was memorable in many ways. He recognised from the first two important disqualifications his indifference to music and his slight knowledge of architecture. On both these subjects he availed himself largely of the aid of others, and threw himself with characteristic energy and entire success into the task of rescuing from neglect and preserving from decay the treasure of historic monuments in which Westminster Abbey is so rich In 1865 he published his Memorials of Westminster Abbey, a work which, despite occasional inaccuracies, is a mine of information. Much of this section is given over to the large number of royal tombs, with extended discussions of royal coronation ceremonies. The last part of the book contains a detailed history of the Abbey from earliest times, with much detail about the people connected with its activities. This work is profusely illustrated with numerous engravings and photogravures by Herbert Railton. Age wear on binding with spines age-toned and damp-stained. Covers moderately foxed. Shelfwear. Leather. Condition: Very Good. Unnamed (illustrator). A fascinating history of the iconic London landmark Westminster Abbey, by the notable English churchman and academic Arthur Penrhyn Stanley. Arthur Penrhyn Stanley was the leading liberal theologian of his time in England and author of a number of popular works on Church History. Serving as the Dean of Westminster from 1864 to 1881, Stanley was a leading authority on the Gothic abbey church, as demonstrated within this work, his 'Memorials of Westminster Abbey'. Whilst occasionally inaccurate, the work contains a vast amount of information on the building and its history, clearly demonstrating Stanley's interest in (and attempts to preserve) the treasure of historic monuments in the building. A sixth edition copy, with 'the author's final revisions'. Copiously illustrated throughout In a straight grain morocco binding, with attractive marbled endpapers and textblock. In a full straight grain morocco binding, rebacked with boards and spine preserved. Externally, slightly rubbed to extremities. Scattered dark spotting to boards, more severe to front board. Front free endpaper detached but present. Prior tape repair to gutter of front pastedown. Rear hinge strained, but relatively firm. Prior owner's ink inscriptions to second free endpaper, dated '1949' and '95'. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout with the odd spot only to first and last few pages.
