About this Item: D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd and N.K. Bose Memorial Foundation, 2006. Hardcover. Condition: New. First edition. The volume presents views on life from the traditional as well as modern perspectives to come up with many interpretations. Indologists, anthropologists, sociologists, philosophers and physical and social scientists profess that traditional thought and modern science offer two different world-views on life: the first encompassing a wholeness of life, and the other explaining the universe and life with ideas of the realm of matter alone. Referring to various ancient texts as well as thoughts of social scientists based on empirical studies, the contributors delve into the Upanishadic and Vedic concepts of life, and the Hindu astrological and ayurvedic perception of life. They examine the Christian perspective of life as well. Discussing the theme from the viewpoint of physical law, the book surveys evolution of life and extinction theories, focusing on development of life over 600 million years from simple to complex. It ponders over questions like radical difference between living and non-living matter though both consist of molecules. Connecting science to societal development, it deals with ancient community theories on life and nature taking specific ethnic communities like the Mesoamericans and the Santals in India as examples. The book is an all-inclusive and extensive study of traditional and scientific perspectives on the life origin, urges and responses, meaning and essence of life, and its development. About this Item: D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd., 2015. Hardcover. Condition: New. First edition. India has a fascinating history of cultural relationship with South-East Asia, spanning across more than the last two millennia, mainly with the spread of Buddhism and Hinduism, deeply impacting the cultural, religious and social lives of people in countries such as Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. The Hindu-Buddhist monuments in South-East Asia stand testimony of this peaceful and mutually beneficial interaction. The contents of this book ? Mekong-Ganga Axis ? centre around India`s association with most of the countries of the region, especially those on either side of the Mekong River. Most of the South-East Asian countries were influenced by more than two foreign cultures, though they have an indigenous culture. The Chinese and Indian cultures had impacted them the most, in addition to the European influence. However, only India?s impact was peaceful and, to a great extent, non-political. This paved the way for many developments in architecture, religious engagements, interculturality, syncretism of cultures, inter-literariness, composite literary cultures, religious arts, trade relations and so on. This book thus critically engages one to all these topics and more, and recalls India`s glorious relationship of the forgone era with these countries, showcasing somewhat a similar kind of cultural/religious affinity from South China to India. And two great rivers, Mekong and Ganga, are witness to it. It also reinstates the criticality of India to be engaged with these countries at present because of the compulsions of a globalized world. About this Item: Aryan Books International, New Delhi, India, 2011. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First Edition. Coins have played a major role in the reconstruction of the history and culture of our country. They unfold those aspects on which contemporary evidences like inscriptions, literature, art and archaeological remains are silent. During the ancient period, Central India - comprising the modern states of Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh-came under the rule of the Mahajanapadas, the Nandas, the Mauryas, the Sungas, the Satavahanas, the Sakas, the Ksatrapas, the Nagas, the Kusanas, the Guptas and their feudatories, the Hunas, the Vardhanas, the Chalukyas, the Kalachuris, the Rashtrakutas, the Gurjara Pratiharas, the Paramaras, the Chandellas, the Kachchhapaghatas, the Nalas and other local dynasties. Numismatics, being a very important source material, has been fruitfully utilised for the reconstruction of the ancient history and culture of Central India from the times of the Mauryas to c. 13th century AD. The present work is a systematic account of the tradition of coinage in Central India. The book also presents a descriptive bibliographic data of the numismatic source material of the region. Having made an in-depth study of the early coinage of the Narmada Valley, the book tries to justify that the numismatic wealth of the region is almost unparalleled in the country. About this Item: World Association for Vedic Studies/D.K.Printworld (P) Ltd, 2012. Hardcover. Condition: New. First edition. The collection of scholarly articles presented in the volume explores various aspects of Vedic traditions, especially relating to global harmony and peace, in the present-day context. The Proceedings of the Sixth World Association for Vedic Studies (WAVES) Conference emphasise Vedic traditions as not confined to the Indian subcontinent today but as having spread to different parts of the globe. They deal with the essence of Vedanta, the contribution of the epic literature, history relating to the Rigvedic Aryans, Vedic sciences, and socio-economic and political aspects of Vedic life. Offering fresh ideas, they highlight the significance of the Vedic system for ensuring global peace and harmony, and satisfaction in the present. They study the concept of harmony and peace, and emphasise on the co-existence in the Upanishads, the Hindu concept of universalism, the importance of the Ayurveda and the Bhagavad-Gita in maintaining mental health, and on the global unity and syncretism in the education provided in ancient India. Attempts are made to cull out management ideas from the Mahabharata, and throw light on the relevance of the Arthashastra in modern-day geo-politics and the special relevance of Sanatana Dharma in the modern world. In the process, the scholars reveal the fictional aspects that have been linked to the Indian traditions and the related social evils. The volume will interest a range of scholars of Indology and general readers as it explores the ancient Indian tradition, especially the Vedic tradition, in a comprehensive manner. This volume is a collection of papers presented in a seminar that was held under the auspices of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Shimla. It endeavours to offer an integral vision of Indian arts in their autonomous and related domains and is designed to meet the requirement of having an authentic and popular sourcebook to enlighten average readers on different manifestations of Indian arts down the ages. It underscores that despite the vicissitudes of history, Indian art in its different forms embodies a remarkably distinctive spirit of creativity that has remained alive through ages and has often been reinvented in various ways in legitimizing the tradition and enriching its nuances and connectedness in practice. The volume is divided into five sections: ‘Plastic Arts in Making’, ‘Beginnings and Efflorescence of Classical Idiom’, ‘Regional Inflexions: Bronzes, Sculpture and Architecture’, ‘Architectural and Painterly Tradition: Medieval, Modern and Folk’ and lastly, the ‘Performing Arts: Dance and Theatre-Tradition and Practice’. These five sections contain twenty one essays respectively on the heritage of Indian proto-historic phase, Mauryan pillars, Sanchi, the Karle chaitya, classical iconography, Ajanta and Bagh Paintings, Pallava and Chola Bronzes, Ellora, Khajuraho, Konarka, Chola temples, temples and sculptures of ancient Kashmir, temples of Uttarakhand, early medieval paintings, Mughal architecture, Rajasthani paintings, modern Indian paintings, loka chitras, classical dances of India and ancient dramatic tradition. It may easily be conceded that the readers would discover more content in the essays than is spelled out in this laconic brief. Seller Inventory # 112762

Notes. Epilogue. Index. Photo plates. To the peoples of pluralistic Manipur past and present who make it what it is. Who can still focus on intercultural understanding and cosharing of values by deconstructing cultural integers and then reassembling them with new motifs rather than even a throwback into the past or a rehash of the arbitrary recent past when intergroup happiness used to spill over from each to another blissfully. Adam Smith's famous example of a tombstone inscription can hardly be forgotten I was well I wished to be better here I am may as well apply here with greater justness. To distress of disappointment and ambition escalating moral values beyond legal norms with worldly wisdom how can present Manipuris indulge in innumerable useless squabbles. And miss oncoming opportunities of globalization reminiscent of the ancient Silk Route. Let's reflect on the centrality of the rolling hills to the 21 century Manipur's identity. Yes from Koubru or Siroi entire length is rolling down to Chingnunghut unendingly. Recalling that Imphal valley from Kangla to Sugnu Hump itself inclines 200 ft. And yet abutted and interjutted by gradients and hillocks it is a roller coaster start to finis Lo. Tibet the roof of the world has been tamed rails laid over chemically treated permafrost. Ethnically they share a deep common ancestry (DNA chromosome) same migration route. They share a common culture language stock workplace neighbourhood promised future. Therefore let a realization dawn on the upcoming generation that hills roll on to valley. Then with what logic at which point will the humans call hills stop and where not after all the continuous rolling foothills and land filled valley (formed by eroded hill soils). Then how can the tiny valley be sequestered from the hills merely because of some past folly. So as to convince current leaders need to be twice as good as perhaps the Meitei kings in contrast think of look east policy and borderless India as a global economic powerhouse. In which the hitherto landlocked Manipuris get assimilated as globalized citizens. Live heretofore under the rule of the house tolerance and good fellowship. 842 pp. Seller Inventory # 73136

About this Item: Aryan Books International, 2012. Hardcover. Condition: New. Advent of Kushans in the Indian subcontinent is a significant historical event. It is suggestive of such processes and factors which shaped early historic cultural milieu of India in particular and Asia in general. The Kushan kings played an important part in the ancient history of India and Central Asia, worthy contemporaries of the three great world powers of the early centuries of the first millennium AD, the Roman Empire, the Han Empire of China and the Arsacid and Sasanian Empires of Iran. During the first four centuries of the millennium, they controlled a vital space between these empires, acting the role of entrepreneurs in international trade and restoring unified rule to northern India. Their patronage of Buddhism enabled it to spread through Central Asia into China. However, in spite of their importance, very little information of their activities has survived into the modern period. This volume is an outcome of the International Seminar entitled, `Kushan Glory and Its Contemporary Challenges`, which was organized by the Bharat Kala Bhavan, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi (India), between October 3 and 5, 2008. Most of the papers were presented in the seminar but there are a few which were invited. Inclusion of these were intended to fill the gaps, in the otherwise holistic format of this volume. The 21 contributions of the volume are placed in seven distinct sections covering different themes, viz., (i) Discoveries: Old and Recent; (ii) Hegemony: Kushan Empire and Out-posts; (iii) Chronology and Succession; (iv) Policies and Patronage: Kushan Religion; (v) Architecture and Settlement: Kushan Archaeology; (vi) Art Expressions: Kushan Portraits and Compositions; (vii) Expansion and Continuity: Kushan Styles and Techniques. This strikingly illustrated volume is a significant contribution to the field of Kushan studies and is valuable for students and scholars of history.
