About this Item: Thomas Dunne Books, 2007. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition, Ex-Library. GREAT BOOK! FIRST EDITION. MILD SHELF WEAR & CREASE ON DUSTJACKET, A FEW LIBRARY STAMPS, NO MARKS IN TEXT. Description: Itís summer in England, and---with nothing urgent demanding their attention---Ringan and Penny are planning a quiet vacation alone together. Their plans change when Ringanís niece, fourteen-year-old violin prodigy Becca, is dumped in their care while her parents deal with an emergency abroad. Ringan has no idea what to do with a teenage relative. Penny points out that Becca is more a musician than a child, and suggests a musical holiday in Cornwall. Playing in front of a live audience with Ringan and a band will give the girl much-needed experience and confidence. It will let Ringan get to know his niece better, as well. Itís a good plan, and everyone approves. And yet something about the St. Ives home of their host, Gowan, leaves Penny uneasy. She hears voices in her mind, speaking in Cornish, and has a horrifying vision through the eyes of a dying man. When, soon after, she finds Becca sleepwalking, Penny learns from Gowan that, many years earlier, his emotionally unstable lover hanged herself in this house. It may simply be the echoes of that tragedy disturbing both her and Becca. But after Becca has a seizure during a live performance of a seemingly harmless song, Penny and Ringan realize that a much older tragedy hangs over Gowan and his family. And if they canít find the truth and lay to rest whatever ghosts still walk, they may lose Becca. New-Slain Knight, the fifth in the Haunted Ballad mystery series, touches on the ties that bind: family, the past and the present, and the mystery that lies behind every story. Yet when the estate she calls home passed from her late brother to a distant relation, Robin, the new Lord Caraway, Serena did a most foolish thing: She wrote to him at his residence abroad--not as a young lady, which would have been shocking enough, but in the guise of the Caraway Estate bailiff. She only meant to write once. She never intended to continue deceiving him. But his replies were so engaging, his grasp of every situation so keen, that before she knew it she had put pen to paper once more. Only now, Serena is at her wit's end. For Lord Caraway has returned to England and wants very much to know what has become of his bailiff.Which leaves Serena crossing swords with a tall, dark and devastatingly handsome earl who makes it dangerously clear that he won't rest until he uncovers the truth--and every other dazzling secret the mysterious and enticing Lady Caraway has to hide. SYNOPSIS: These unique mind-stretching puzzles call for clear, logical thinking and reasoning. No specialized mathematics is involved in the puzzles, though numbers do enter to some extent. There are no traps - no double meanings - no false scents - only straightforward situations, in varying degrees of complexity. The solutions call for ingenuity, imagination, and insight - and, above all, for the ability to stay with the thread of reasoning, wherever it leads and however unlikely its meanderings. Mr. Emmet is the author also of Learning to Think and Thinking Clearly. He holds strongly the view that our educational system today places too much emphasis on remembering and not enough on the use of the mind for thinking. The world in which he moves in this book is the unreal world of "closed system" thinking, where there is no place for what is probable or uncertain. If we are told that Duggie is a liar we can e sure there will be no deviation from his untruthfulness, that no change of heart or thoughtlessness on his part will result in truth slipping through. The puzzles are of varying types and arranged in order of difficulty. The puzzle buff is certain to derive pleasure, entertainment, and relaxation from Brain Puzzlers' Delight; more, and as a bonus, he will emerge with a mind elegantly exercised in disciplined, systematic, and resourceful thinking. But again, this will be lagniappe - the book is for enjoying. Solutions will full explanations appear at the close. Some of The Puzzles - MISCELLANEOUS - EASY Who Killed Popoff? About this Item: Polity, Cambridge, 2013. Octavo hardcover; black boards with white spine titling; 629pp., colour and b&w plates. Minimal wear; near fine in like dustwrapper. Postage quoted is for a standard format octavo book. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. In May 1992, the dons of Cambridge University filed into their parliament to vote on whether to award an honorary degree to the French philosopher Jacques Derrida, founder of so-called deconstruction. Despite a deftly managed smear campaign by the opposition, Derrida's supporters carried the day. It would be interesting to know how many of those who tried to block him in the name of rigorous scholarship had read a single book of his, or even a couple of articles. The truth is that they did not need to. The word was abroad that this purveyor of fashionable French gobbledegook was a charlatan and a nihilist, a man who believed that anything could mean anything and that there was nothing in the world but writing. He was a corrupter of youth who had to be stopped in his tracks. As a teenager, Derrida had fantasised with some of his friends about blowing up their school with some explosives they had acquired. There were those in Cambridge who thought he was planning to do the same to western civilisation. He did, however, have an unlikely sympathiser. When the Duke of Edinburgh, chancellor of Cambridge University, presented Derrida with his degree in the year in which Charles and Diana separated, he murmured to him that deconstruction had begun to affect his own family too. Deconstruction holds that nothing is ever entirely itself. There is a certain otherness lurking within every assured identity. It seizes on the out-of-place element in a system, and uses it to show how the system is never quite as stable as it imagines. There is something within any structure that is part of it but also escapes its logic. It comes as no surprise that the author of these ideas was a Sephardic Jew from colonial Algeria, half in and half out of French society. If his language was French, he could also speak the patois of working-class Arabs. He would later return to his home country as a conscript in the French army, a classic instance of divided identity.Benoît Peeters has ransacked the voluminous Derrida archives and interviewed scores of his friends and colleagues. The result is a marvellously compelling account, lucidly translated by Andrew Brown. The man who emerges from this portrait is an agonised soul with sudden outbreaks of gaiety, an astonishingly original thinker with more than a dash of vanity who nevertheless made himself fully available to the humblest student. In personal conversation he was that most admirable of intellectuals, one visibly relieved not to have to speak of intellectual matters. He was one of the latest in an honourable lineage of anti-philosophers - from Kierkegaard, Nietzsche and Marx to Freud, Adorno, Wittgenstein and Walter Benjamin - who could say what they had to say only by inventing a new style of writing and philosophising. Not all of Derrida's writing is to everyone's taste. He had an irritating habit of overusing the rhetorical question, which lends itself easily to parody: 'What is it, to speak? How can I even speak of this? Who is this 'I' who speaks of speaking?' Even so, the Cambridge backwoodsmen were wrong. Derrida, who died of cancer in 2004 urging his friends to affirm life, was no nihilist. Nor did he want to blow up western civilisation with a stick of conceptual dynamite. He simply wished to make us less arrogantly assured that when we speak of truth, love, identity and authority, we know exactly what we mean." - Terry Eagleton. Seller Inventory # 87066

About this Item: Hachette Book Group USA Okt 2015, 2015. Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - In this bold and important book, Garry Kasparov argues that Vladimir Putin's dangerous global ambitions have been ignored too long -- and he won't be stopped unless America stands up to him. The ascension of Vladimir Putin--a former lieutenant colonel of the KGB--to the presidency of Russia in 1999 should have been a signal that the country was headed away from democracy. Yet in the intervening years--as America and the world's other leading powers have continued to appease him--Putin has grown not only into a dictator but a global threat. With his vast resources and nuclear weapons, Putin is at the centre of a worldwide assault on political liberty. For Garry Kasparov, none of this is news. He has been a vocal critic of Putin for over a decade, even leading the pro-democracy opposition to him in the farcical 2008 Presidential election. Yet years of seeing his Cassandra-like prophecies about Putin's intentions fulfilled have left Kasparov with the realization of a darker truth: Putin's Russia, like ISIS or Al Qaeda, defines itself in opposition to the free countries of the world. He is still fighting the Cold War, even as Americans have first moved beyond it, and over time, forgotten its lessons. Lest we be drawn into another prolonged conflict, Kasparov now urges a forceful stand-- diplomatic and economic--against him. For as long as the world's powerful democracies continue to recognize and negotiate with Putin, he can maintain credibility in his home country. He faces few strong enemies within his country, so meaningful opposition must come from abroad. Argued with the force of Kasparov's world-class intelligence, conviction, and hopes for his home country, Winter is Coming is an unmistakable call to action against a threat we've ignored for too long. 320 pp. Englisch. About this Item: Farrar, Straus & Giroux Inc, New York, 1905. Hardback. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. - (illustrator). One of The New Yorker's "Books We Loved in 2017," a BOMB's Looking Back on 2017: Literature Selection, and one of Vulture's 10 Best Thriller Books of 2017. Girlfriend. Prostitute. Addict. Terrorist? Who is K? The daring new novel from Katherine Faw, the brilliant author of Young God, is a scintillating story of money, sex, and power told in Faw's viciously sharp prose. A high-end, girlfriend-experience prostitute has just returned to her native New York City after more than a decade abroad--in Dubai, with a man she recalls only as the Sheikh--but it's unclear why exactly she's come back. Did things go bad for her? Does she have scores to settle? Regardless, she has quickly made herself at home. She's set up a rotation of clients--all of them in finance--each of whom has different delusions of how he is important to her. And she's also met a man whom she doesn't charge--a damaged former Army Ranger, back from Afghanistan. Her days are strangely orderly: A repetition of dinners, personal grooming, museum exhibitions, sex, Duane Reades (she likes the sushi), cosmology, sex, gallery shows, nightclubs, heroin, sex, and art films (which she finds soothing). She finds the pattern confirming, but does she really believe it's sustainable? Or do the barely discernible rifts in her routine suggest that something else is percolating under the surface? Could she have fallen for one of her bankers? Or do those supposed rifts suggest a pattern within the pattern, a larger scheme she's not showing us, a truth that won't be revealed until we can see everything? | 152 x 228 x 22.86mm | 399.16g | 208 pages. Abstracts colophon: Illustration: the development of contemporary art in China has experienced for 30 years. to reflect on the writings of this period of history is also a large number of. However. the majority of these works is a record of the facts. not yet show the law of development of this part of history and internal logic. Although I do not agree with the radical hermeneutics of view of history. all history as the history of the interpreter; but I also admit: If you have a good perspective to finishing history. it is possible to let history become more easy to remember. Let the facts become more easy to understand. This should be the basic motivation for writing history. I try to organize the course of development of Chinese contemporary art to the real point of view. in general. any art can be associated with the real event. can be attributed to the field of contemporary art. However. real different levels. different steps close to the real Chinese contemporary art showing a different stage. For example. we can at least distinguish real life. the true form of real. emotional. mental and real political real cultural real. To the real deceptively simple. allows Chinese artists spent decades of time. Some have very real works of art. and today still seems inevitable contrived. Used as a benchmark to judge the true contemporary art. than the other criteria is easier and more effective. However. when artists spent a long time and finally hit a real. but found that the arts are not true. Art needs real. but the truth does not necessarily is art. A social event is true. but this event is likely not a work of art. Although we emphasize the characteristics of contemporary art event. but not all events are art. Art might just hyperreality. Of course. this is only in the art after touching true. will it be possible to enter the real field. As a result. I will summarize the process of Chinese Contemporary Art: false realism realism to all kinds of real evolution. Evolution kinds of realism to surrealism. With such a framework. we look at the history of Chinese contemporary art. may be able to get some new understanding. 2 Let us use this framework to examine Fang Lijun. he is one of the most active artists rec. About this Item: n.p., Batavia (but Amsterdam?), 1780. Octavo, 96pp., booksellers label to inner front cover, engraved vignette on the title; uncut in contemporary patterned wrappers fashioned from a booksellers catalogue, handwritten title-label to upper cover. A remarkable eighteenth century pamphlet detailing the political, economic and military conditions in the Dutch East Indies. Although anonymous, the work was written by an evidently well-informed author who provides sensitive strategic insights into the weakness of Dutch interests in the region, stressing their vulnerability to British and French aggression.Translated from a simultaneously issued Dutch edition (Nederlandisch India), the report was written either shortly before or at the beginning of the Fourth Anglo-Dutch War (1780-1784). The unknown author's frank and candid discussion of the weaknesses of the VOC generally and Batavia particularly, has led to much speculation about the intentions of the work. 'The economy was precarious, persons in both Europe and Southeast Asia were Jekyll and Hyde. There were those who tried to warn of VOC troubles but, when corruption reaches the highest places and when statistical cooperation can be secured between production and sales, what to do! The Heeren XVII knew less than they should have known about affairs abroad. They "regulated" to a degree only, whereas the truth of minimal salaried men bringing fabulous fortunes home? was easily and constantly very visible in Asia to anybody who looked. This author was writing from a position of prominence; he too had money; he was equally fluent in Dutch and French: he tried to warn. Where did he print? And - what was his name?' (Smith Diehl, Printers and Printing in the East Indies to 1850: Batavia, 1990, p.151-152).The susceptibility of Batavia to a British or French attack is a central concern and in compelling detail the author outlines the weakness of the various garrisons defending the VOC administrative capital. '[Batavia] un château qui tombe entièrement en ruine? J'oserais assurer que trois ou quatre vaisseaux Anglais, Français ou de route autre nation, emporteraient Batavia dans deux ou trois jours.' It is unclear then why the report was immediately rendered into French (as well as English), but these translations did raise the hackles of contemporary commentators in London particularly: was the work in fact some sort of ruse de guerre? The volume is bound in a bookseller's catalogue (from which we can suppose a publishing date sometime around 1780) which has been overprinted in red ink in a striking diamond pattern. The catalogue likely belonged to Geneva bookseller Jean François Bassompierre, whose ticket is pasted down on the inside cover. The title page notes printing in Batavia, although Landwehr suggests very plausibly that it may in fact be Amsterdam. Spine repaired, title page and A2 neatly remounted, very good. About this Item: Printed for A. Strahan; and T. Cadell, in the Strand, London, 1790. Early octavo edition of Edward Gibbon's monumental history, following the trajectory of the Roman Empire from the death of Marcus Aurelius to the fall of Constantinople thirteen centuries later, an epic feat of historiography that took twenty years to complete. Gibbon's narrative drive and pointed analysis found an immediate readership at home and abroad: "Our fancy may create, or adopt, a pleasing romance, that the Goths and Vandals sallied from Scandinavia, ardent to avenge the flight of Odin . . . to burn the records of classic literature, and to found their national architecture on the broken members of the Tuscan and Corinthian orders. But in simple truth, the northern conquerors were neither sufficiently savage, nor sufficiently refined, to entertain such aspiring ideas" (Chapter LXXI). The first edition of Gibbon's history appeared in six quarto volumes, issued from 1776 to 1788. In 1783, publishers Strahan and Cadell reissued the first half of the work in six octavo volumes; in 1790, they reissued the second half to complete the twelve-volume set. The first six volumes of this set are early printings, dated 1788; the final six volumes are first printings, dated 1790. This set belonged to Scottish explorer James Bruce, Laird of Kinnaird, who traveled widely throughout North Africa in the 1760s and 1770s. He was one of the first Europeans to trace the Blue Nile to its Ethiopian source, in 1770, and the first to follow the Blue Nile to its confluence with the White Nile in Sennar (now the Sudan). In 1790, the year that the final volumes of his Gibbon set were printed, Bruce published his own Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile in five quarto volumes, a classic of African exploration. PMM 222. A bright near-fine set, with an excellent historical association, bridging the Roman and British empires. Twelve octavo volumes, full contemporary polished calf, raised bands, spine compartments ruled in gilt, red and green morocco spine labels, all edges stained yellow. Frontispiece portrait of Gibbon after Joshua Reynolds and map of the Eastern empire in Volume I; two additional folding maps, "Parts of Europe and Asia Adjacent to Constantinople" and map of the Western empire, in Volume II; general index in Volume XII. Bookplate of James Bruce, "Bruce of Kinnaird," and handwritten shelf mark "101" in all volumes; additional label "From Kinnaird 1897" and previous owner notes to front endpapers of Volume I. Occasional scuff to bindings, spine ends rubbed, chip to spine label of Volume II. Seller Inventory # 1001233

About this Item: Philadelphia. June 3, 1793., 1793. [2]pp. plus integral address leaf. Quarto. Lightly silked. A few tears and losses repaired, affecting a few words of text. Good. In a half green morocco and cloth slipcase, spine gilt. Benjamin Rush writes to fellow physician Valentine Seaman, discussing Dr. Seaman's recent work on mineral waters and other medical discourses. Seaman was the first doctor in America to teach clinical surgery, and was likewise the first to introduce vaccination, vaccinating his own children against chicken pox. Rush was a Pennsylvania physician, delegate to the Continental Congress, and signer of the Declaration of Independence. He later served as surgeon general for the Middle Department of the Continental Army, though he resigned in outrage over the disorganization and corruption in army hospitals. He established several medical facilities in Philadelphia, including the College of Physicians in 1787. "Writing prolifically over nearly half a century, Rush was the first American physician to become widely known at home and abroad. More than any other physician, Rush established the reputation of Philadelphia as a center for medical training. His drive to understand mental illness and render the treatment of mental patients more humane earned Rush the title 'father of American psychiatry'" - ANB. In this letter he writes: "Your analysis of the mineral waters at Saratoga is ingenious, and calculated to be useful. I admire the intrepidity in thinking discovered by the authors of the inaugural dissertations. I object only to the indelicate epithets with which they condemn the theories from which they dissented. In a science so difficult as medicine.even conjectures should be treated with decency. It will give me pleasure to hear of your not only rivalling your alma mater, but of your exceeding us in useful discourses. 'Ubi libertas, ibi Roma.' In like manner where there is truth, there should be the focus of all literary prejudice and attachment. I expect to commit a second volume of medical inquiries and observations to the press in a few days. "Mr. Stall, one of my pupils, will convey to you some copies of the theses of our late graduates. I beg you would continue to send me copies of all that are published in your college every year. I love to read the productions of young men. If they are destitute of new facts, they abound with new tho'ts, & are most necessary to men in the median or decline of life." A fine letter between two of the country's leading medical men.
