About this Item: Dover Publications Inc., United States, 2003. Paperback. Condition: New. New edition. Language: English . Brand New Book. If a tree falls in the forest and no one is present to hear it, does it make a sound? It does not, according to George Berkeley. Originally published in 1710, this landmark of Western philosophy introduced a revolutionary concept: immaterialism, which asserts that to be is to perceive or be perceived. An Irish clergyman who spent his entire philosophical career as a churchman, Berkeley linked his investigations to his religious interests. A Treatise Concerning the Principles of Human Knowledge opens with an assault on Locke s theory of abstract ideas and proceeds with arguments that sensible qualities exist only when perceived as ideas. Physical objects, he claims, are no more than collections of qualities, and these sensible objects, too, are merely ideas. Berkeley relates his position to the achievements of eighteenth-century science, and proclaims the compatibility of immaterialism with traditional religion. The fullest expression of Berkeley s doctrine of immaterialism, this classic work influenced British philosophers from David Hume to Bertrand Russell and the other logical positivists. It is essential reading for all students of philosophy. Seller Inventory # AAC9780486432533

About this Item: Oxford University Press, 2002. Softcover. Condition: Good. 5th or later Edition. Praised for its accessibility and comprehensiveness, Philosophy: The Quest for Truth provides an excellent selection of classical and contemporary readings on nineteen key problems in philosophy. Louis Pojman has carefully organized the essays in each section so that they present pro/con dialogues that allow students to compare and contrast the philosophers' positions. Topics covered include the nature of philosophy, the existence of God, immortality, knowledge, the mind-body question, personal identity, free will and determinism, ethics, political philosophy, and the meaning of life. The fifth edition offers selections from Plato, Rene Descartes, John Locke, David Hume, William James, Bertrand Russell, John Hick, John Hospers, and James Rachels--as well as essays by Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas, Blaise Pascal, Thomas Hobbes, George Berkeley, Immanuel Kant, Gilbert Ryle, Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre, Friedrich Nietzsche, Alvin Plantinga, and many others. In Philosophy: The Quest for Truth, 5th edition, Pojman offers substantial introductions to each of the nineteen philosophical problems. In addition, each of the seventy-three readings is accompanied by an individual introduction with a biographical sketch of the philosopher, study questions, and reflective questions that challenge students to analyze and critique the material. Short bibliographies following each major section, an appendix on how to read and write philosophy papers, and a detailed glossary further enhance the text's pedagogical value. Invaluable for introductory courses in philosophy, this highly acclaimed text inspires and guides students' quest for wisdom. The fifth edition adds new study questions and nine new articles: * Father F. C. Copleston and Bertrand Russell: "A Debate on the Argument from Contingency" * Corliss Lamont: "Freedom of the Will and Human Responsibility" * Richard Taylor: "Fate" * Louis Pojman: "A Critique of Ethical Egoism" * Robert Paul Wolff: "In Defense of Anarchism" * Brian Barry: "A Cosmopolitan Theory of International Society" * Thomas Nagel: "The Absurd" * Thurgood Marshall: "The Death Penalty Is a Denial of Human Dignity" * Burton Leiser: "The Death Penalty Is Permissible". About this Item: Audible Studios on Brilliance, 2017. CD-Audio. Condition: New. Unabridged. Language: English . Brand New. From interpreting the world to changing it, a synthesis of Chomsky s early work on philosophy, linguistics, and politics. Originally delivered in 1971 as the first Cambridge lectures in memory of Bertrand Russell, Problems of Knowledge and Freedom is a masterful and cogent synthesis of Noam Chomsky s moral philosophy, linguistic analysis, and emergent political critique of America s war in Vietnam. In the first half of this wide-ranging work, Chomsky takes up Russell s lifelong search for the empirical principles of human understanding, in a philosophical overview referencing Hume, Wittgenstein, von Humboldt, and others. In the following half, aptly titled -On Changing the World-, Chomsky applies these concepts to the issues that would remain the focus of his increasingly political work of the period - his criticisms of the war in Indochina and the Cold War ideology that supported it, of the centralization of US decision-making in the Pentagon and the growing influence of multinational corporations in those circles, and of the politicization of American universities in the post-World War II years, as well as his analyses of the Cuban Missile Crisis and Nixon s foreign policies. About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. These reflections are meditations about the Spiritual Dimension of Existence (SDE). The SDE Worldview holds that all human beings possess God s Endowment: the Image of God. Each individual is a Created-Person with a vast library of spiritual characteristics in profound complexity and experienced in daily thought and life. Everyone at some stage of life will ask in wonder what lies beyond the Epistemic Horizon. Avoidance of ultimate questions concerning significance, meaning, belief, truth, knowledge, and value is not a live option. Suppressing the quest for ultimate meaning as bogus inevitably proves to be problematic for this choice assumes meaning itself. Naturalism s hypotheses, theories, or models are unsatisfactory because its worldview arbitrarily limits knowledge to its methods and conclusions - all of which are probabilistic, subject to subsequent revision or rejection. Its closed space-time system of matter in motion plus chance, wherein all reference to the Supernatural is suppressed or denied begets a reductionist frame of reference leading to nihilism. Man is a useless expression resigns one to meaningless existence, or Bertrand Russell s unyielding despair. Held to the prison of naturalism s worldview, Russell s conclusion is inevitable. However, beyond the boundaries of materialism, the Supernatural beckons with a question: Who is the Absolute and Ultimate Point of Reference for all thought and life: Man or God? The author by the Grace of God chose God and the life of unyielding hope rather than the despair of nihilism leading to suicide. Part One contains reflections on a sample the Endowment s Image of God: Life, Memory, Meaning, and Truth. Part Two records self-examinations on Confusion, Misology, Logic, and Destiny. Part Three offers reflections for the faith of unyielding hope Gospel, Resurrection, Time, and Worldview. A Glossary followed by an Index closes the main portion of the work. Appendices with related subject matter and various resources close this project. Seller Inventory # APC9781544924236

About this Item: Martino Fine Books, 2014. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. 2014 Reprint of 1918 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The title-essay of this collection suggests Russell s lifelong preoccupation; the disentanglement, with ever-increasing precision, of what is subjective or intellectually cloudy from what is objective or capable of logical demonstration. The first five essays he calls entirely popular they include two on the revolutionary changes in mathematics in the previous hundred years, and the one on the value of science in human culture. The last five, somewhat more technical, are concerned with particular problems of philosophy: the ultimate nature of matter, the connection between sense data and physics, the problem of causality an different ways of knowing. In these one can see the Russell method in operation, intellectual analysis dissecting the problem to its bare bone. Essays Include: Mysticism and logic.-- The place of science in liberal education.--A free man s worship.--The study of mathematics.--mathematics and the metaphysicians.--The ultimate constituents of matter.--The relation of sense-data to physics.--On the notion of cause.--Knowledge by acquintance and knowledge by description. About this Item: D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd., New Delhi, India, 2007. Softcover. Condition: New. First Edition. In the pattern of Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy, this book focuses on the evolution of philosophy in India with reference to socio-political and economic conditions, through which one can learn that life and thought are invariably interconnected with polity and persons, economy and environment. The first chapter demonstrates the socio-political, geographical and racial causes for the formation of human thinking, followed by a chapter on what philosophy is and the nature of Indian philosophy. The Vedas and Upanishads, the Bhagavad-Gita, and about five schools of Vedanta, including Kashmir Shaivism were discussed at length in three different chapters. Another three chapters deal with Carvakas, Jainism and Buddhism; and one on Samkhya and Vaisheshika. This book is unique in the sense that it contains a review in the conclusion; and M.N. Roy has evaluated the philosophical heritage in its introduction. M.N. Roy has remarked that the "chapters are of great importance methodologically, and as such constitute the more valuable part of a commendable work of scholarship." It is useful as a reference book for students and scholars as well as general readers interested in understanding the evolution of ancient Indian thought, and broadens the horizons of their knowledge of Indian philosophy.Printed Pages: 280. Most observers may be perplexed in seeing a rise in conversions to Islam, despite the prevalent Islamophobia. The fact is that many of the Western intellectuals including Goethe, Thomas Carlyle, George Bernard Shaw, Bertrand Russell and Arnold Toynbee have praised the beauty of Islam. This is recently epitomized by Thomas Clearly, a prominent linguist of the Harvard in these glowing words: One aspect of Islam that is unexpected and yet appealing to the post-Christian secular mind is the harmonious interplay of faith and reason. Islam does not demand unreasoned belief. Rather it invites intelligent faith, growing from observation, reflection, and contemplation, beginning with nature and what is all around us. Accordingly, antagonism between religion and science such as that familiar to Westerners is foreign to Islam. it eventually nursed Europe out of Dark Ages, laying the foundations for the Renaissance. As such, this book is premised on the understanding that Islamic message revealed to Prophet Muhammad in the seventh century possesses a vigor and vitality that makes it uniquely dynamic. It is attributable to the purity of Qur an against other scriptures subjected over long periods time to human tempering. The Prophet took all possible measures to assure that every word of Qur an remains pure, unmixed even with his own word, and Muslims have vigilantly guarded its authenticity. Qur anic contents provide perennial transcendental truths that are universally applicable and are valid for the entire humanity without any distinction. Its source is One Unique Transcendent God with infinite knowledge and wisdom and therefore is valid for all times and places. Thus it also possesses a unique dynamicity, which provides insights for solving problems faced by humankind. Islam provides a comprehensive code of life for success in this world and in the eternity of the Hereafter. It works in conformity with human nature (called Fitra in the Qur anic text) - informing us that human nature although weak is basically good. And is directed at reforming us and our society for our own good. Islam literally means peace and is aimed at establishing peace within oneself, with God and His creation - and on earth and its environs, bestowed as a trust to us from God. It is unequivocally emphatic on justice, since peace cannot be achieved without rendering justice to the aggrieved party. Islam confirms the goodness inherent in all faiths and calls not for clash, but as equals in brotherly dialogue to serve God and humankind as His noble creation. The primacy of this responsibility was recently emphasized in a Common Word letter by world Islamic scholars addressed to all other faiths and their denominations. In that spirit, an appeal is hereby made to all people of faith to work together diligently and earnestly to meet the challenges of time, such as eradication of hunger, poverty, homelessness, drug abuse and a plethora of other vices and problems that inflict people everywhere. This is the responsibility of faiths, more than any other system because they are equipped for mass appeal and address the human psyche as none other can. Therefore, for the sake of humanity people of faith must play their due role in solving multifarious problems facing us all. Seller Inventory # APC9781497503717

About this Item: The New Press, United States, 2003. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. In the following half, aptly titled On Changing the World, Chomsky applies these concepts to the issues that would remain the focus of his increasingly political work of the period--his criticisms of the war in Indochina and the Cold War ideology that supported it, of the centralization of U.S. decision-making in the Pentagon and the growing influence of multinational corporations in those circles, and of the politicization of American universities in the post-World War II years, as well as his analyses of the Cuban Missile Crisis and Nixon s foreign policies. About this Item: D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd. New Delhi, 2007. Paperback. Condition: New. First edition. In the pattern of Bertrand Russell`s History of Western Philosophy, this book focuses on the evolution of philosophy in India with reference to socio-political and economic conditions, through which one can learn that life and thought are invariably interconnected with polity and persons, economy and environment. M.N. Roy has remarked that the "chapters are of great importance methodologically, and as such constitute the more valuable part of a commendable work of scholarship." It is useful as a reference book for students and scholars as well as general readers interested in understanding the evolution of ancient Indian thought, and broadens the horizons of their knowledge of Indian philosophy.
