About this Item: DuMont, Köln, 2010. Lex. 8° (25-30 cm), Hardcover. About this Item: Fotohof. Hardcover. Condition: New. 128 pages. In remembrance of the time when photography involved chemistry, mechanical cameras and an element of mystery, Vienna-based Austrian photographer and artist Matthias Herrmann (b. 1963) returns to the photo studio with an eye toward traditional still life. But these are not the perfect traditional flower-in-a-vase still lives by Robert Mapplethorpe or Irving Penn. Instead, Herrmann strews his images with professional photography equipmentvarious color filters and film packaging along with alluring studio lightingin short, anything that says non-digital and reflecting on photographys 150-year history of technique. Along with over 100 color and black-and-white images, Herrmann folds in a little writing and artentries from his own journals; a poem by fellow artist, collaborator and friend AA Bronson, past member of General Idea; plus four exquisite watercolor portraits by Spanish artist Sito Mjica. This is about the vanishing of classical photography as we knew it, symbolized in its packaging, paraphernalia and fetishes, as Matthias Herrmann writes in one of his journal entries. About this Item: Getty Publications, Los Angeles, 2011. Hardcover. Condition: New. 368 pages. Hardcover with dustjacket. New book. PHOTOGRAPHY. This first major monograph of Los Angeles-based artist Judy Fiskin includes reproductions of nearly three hundred images taken from 1973 to 1995. Since Fiskin turned to video in the late 1990s, this compendium represents her complete photographic Ïuvre, including many images never before published. Distinctive in both subject matter and form, Fiskin's photographs showcase the less-noticed aspects of the built environment, from vernacular and military architecture to period furniture and flower-arranging competitions. Her images are printed in small scale in black and white with black borders and set within a field of white photographic paper, thus becoming objects in and of themselves as well as windows into an earlier time and place. The text includes an introductory essay and an illuminating 1988 interview by the artist John Divola, as well as a chronology and bibliography. The book was published in conjunction with In Focus: Los Angeles, 1945-1980, an exhibition of the J. Paul Getty Museum's holdings of photographs made in Southern California, which was on view at the Getty Center from December 20, 2011, to May 6, 2012, as part of Pacific Standard Time. Virginia Heckert is curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum and coauthor of Irving Penn: Small Trades (Getty, 2009). (Key Words: Aesthetics, Photography, Judy Fiskin, Virginia Heckert, John Divola). book. Seller Inventory # 76487X1

About this Item: Milwaukee, WI: Milwaukee Art Museum/Aperture Foundation, 2013. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 280 pages. Published in 2013. Retrospective Exhibition Monograph. One of the best books on color photography in our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. A brilliant production by Milwaukee Art Museum: Oversize-volume format. Maroon cloth boards with black titles embossed on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by various contributors, a Who's Who of American photography. Texts by Katherine A. Bussard, Curator of Photography, Art Institute of Chicago, and Lisa Hostetler, Curator of Photography, Milwaukee Art Museum. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper to the highest standards. In pictorial DJ, which features the painterly photograph, "Bouquet of Flowers", by Alfred Stieglitz, and titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition of the same name held at the Milwaukee Art Museum in 2013, which travelled on to the Art Institute of Chicago. The show was underwritten by the Aperture Foundation New York. Presents "Color Rush: American Color Photography From Stieglitz To Sherman". Perhaps the single best - and most beautiful - overview of the arrival of color as a serious medium for art photography. Since photography's inception, color has always been the technological goal and just as important, consumer desire. But serious photographers (those who considered the medium as THE exciting, new vehicle for artistic expression) were slow to take it seriously, partly because they were concerned that photographs would look like paintings (which they do, as the Stieglitz Cover Image, however brilliant, clearly shows). Today, in 2017, many artists (like Robert Frank, the greatest photographer of our time) do appreciate color, but have deliberately chosen to work mainly, if not exclusively, in black-and-white (and for a melancholy artist-sufferer like Frank, understandably so). For perspective, cinema, the "moving picture" by-product and end-result of photography, is now predominantly in color, and is almost unimaginable in black-and-white unless a specific (and commercially risky) point is being made by the artist. This magnificent volume seeks to redress the imbalance, by drawing attention to the substantial achievement of color in mass media and the ground-breaking work of figures like Alfred Stieglitz, Harry Callahan, Saul Leiter, Irving Penn, William Eggleston, Joel Meyerowitz, Stephen Shore, Joel Sternfeld, Nan Goldin, and Cindy Sherman, among others. That is, photographers who have worked successfully in color as well as photographers who could work ONLY in color (like Martin Parr today, among Brits). Robert Frank once described color as "superfluous". Superfluity is precisely what color offers: Abundance, excess, extravagance, beauty-as-plenty. An absolute "must-have" title for photography book collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed and inscribed in black ink-pen on the title page by Katherine A. Bussard and Lisa Hostetler. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. There is no recipient named. This title is a contemporary art photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such double-signed and inscribed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a pristine beauty. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with color plates. Some of the greatest photographers of the 20th and 21st centuries. A fine copy. ISBN 1597112267. Signed by Author.
