About this Item: Hail Fire, United States, 2011. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Godliness is Profitable for All Things by Isaac Barrow. In all places and in all societies, piety-or godliness-produces, advances, and establishes order, peace, safety, prosperity, all that is good, all that is lovely and agreeable, and all that is convenient and pleasant for human society and ordinary life. Piety is the special interest of all who are involved in governing and education. Piety is their greatest wisdom and policy; it will both preserve their outward state here in this world, and it will satisfy their consciences and save their souls. All the Machiavellian arts and tricks amount to nothing in comparison to this one plain and easy way of securing and furthering the interests of men. Piety is not moved to needless change. Piety cherishes worth and encourages industry, whereupon virtue flourishes and wealth is increased and, as a result, the occasions and means of disorder are stopped and the pretences for sedition and faction are cut off. If every governor would have the people honest and diligent, if every parent would have his children obliging and grateful, if every man would have his friend faithful and kind, if we would have others act in a just and sincere manner, then we must each strive to further piety from which all good dispositions and practices proceed. Piety is a fence protecting each individual-rendering each man civil, condescending, kind, and helpful to others. Piety is the only and right ballast of society. Seller Inventory # APC9780982804353

Appendixes, References, Bibliography, Index. CLIP - Sir Isaac Newton; a "IfI have seen_further it is by standing onye shoulders ofgiants. " Newton went from Ondinary to Genius in three years, 1664-1666. Q Who was responsibkfor suchphenomenalprogress? A. Agiant ofa man. My objective in writing this account is to restore Isaac Barrow's once high reputation. I do not pretend to create a new assessment of Barrow's character. Simply, my approach is to revisit the details presented by Barrow's biographers and those who knew him personally. Considering that the best assessment of a person's reputation is drawn from his colleagues and contemporaries, it is quite appropriate to review and restate the judgment made on Barrow in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It is very significant to note that Barrow's high reputation, following his death, never seems to have been challenged before the twentieth century. On what basis is the reassessment of Barrow's character made by modern authors? It appears to devolve fro m personal interpretations of events that took place three hundred years ago. An example of an interpretation made is a view on Barrow's ambitious pretensions. The author states " Barrow was a man ambitious for preferment. " One need only read the biograp hy, epitaphs and character sketches, provided by those who knew Barrow personally, to conclude that ambition did not drive him. On the contrary, he was a very modest man, content with his lot in life, pursuing learning and scholarship. Seller Inventory # 007850

About this Item: Random House USA Inc, United States, 2002. Paperback. Condition: New. Reprint. Language: English . Brand New Book. What conceptual blind spot kept the ancient Greeks (unlike the Indians and Maya) from developing a concept of zero? Why did St. Augustine equate nothingness with the Devil? What tortuous means did 17th-century scientists employ in their attempts to create a vacuum? And why do contemporary quantum physicists believe that the void is actually seething with subatomic activity? You ll find the answers in this dizzyingly erudite and elegantly explained book by the English cosmologist John D. Barrow. Ranging through mathematics, theology, philosophy, literature, particle physics, and cosmology, The Book of Nothing explores the enduring hold that vacuity has exercised on the human imagination. Combining high-wire speculation with a wealth of reference that takes in Freddy Mercury and Shakespeare alongside Isaac Newton, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking, the result is a fascinating excursion to the vanishing point of our knowledge. About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from William Oughtred: A Great Seventeenth-Century Teacher of Mathematics In the year 1660 the Royal Society was founded by royal favor in London, although in reality its inception took place in 1645 when the Philosophical Society (or, as Boyle called it, the Invisible College came into being, which held meetings at Gresham College in London and later in Oxford. It was during the second half Of the seventeenth century that Sir Isaac Newton, surrounded by a group of great men - Wallis, Hooke, Barrow, Halley, Cotes - carried on his epoch-making researches in mathe matics, astronomy, and physics. But it is not this half century of science in England, nor any Of its great men, that especially engage our attention in this monograph. It is rather the half-century preceding, an epoch of prepara tion, when in the early times of the House of Stuart the sciences began to ?ourish in England. Says Dr. A. E. Shipley: Whatever were the political and moral de ficiencies of the Stuart kings, no one of them lacked intel ligence in things artistic and scientific. It was at this time that mathematics, and particularly algebra, began to be cultivated with greater zeal, when elementary alge bra with its symbolism as we know it now began to take its Shape.
