Hardcover. Condition: Used - Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. In 1936, an ornithologist called James Bond released the definitive taxonomy of birds found in the Caribbean, titled 'Birds of the West Indies.' Ian Fleming, an active bird watcher living in Jamaica, subsequently appropriated the name for his novel's lead character. This co-opting of names was the first in a series of substitutions that would become central to the construction of the James Bond narrative. In a meticulous and comprehensive dissection of the Bond films, artist Taryn Simon inventoried women, weapons and vehicles, constant elements in the films between 1962 and 2012. The contents of these categories function as essential accessories to the narrative's myth of the seductive, powerful and invincible western male. Maintaining the illusion the narrative relies upon--an ageless Bond, state-of-the-art weaponry, herculean vehicles and desirable women--requires constant replacements, and a contract exists between Bond and the viewer, which binds the narrative to that set of expectations. Continually satisfying those obligations allowed Bond to become a ubiquitous brand, a signifier to be activated with each subsequent novel and film. In 'Birds of the West Indies,' Simon presents a visual database of interchangeable variables used in the production of fantasy, through which she examines the economic and emotional value generated by their repetition.Taryn Simon was born in New York in 1975. She is a graduate of Brown University and a Guggenheim Fellow. Her photographs and writing have been the subject of solo exhibitions at institutions including The Museum of Modern Art, New York (2012), Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (2012); Tate Modern, London (2011); Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin (2011); Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2007) and P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (2003). In 2011 her work was included in the 54th Venice Biennale. Light rubbing on outer, clear acetate dust jacket; otherwise, very nice, clean, tight copy free of any marks.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. In 1936, an American ornithologist named James Bond published the definitive taxonomy Birds of the West Indies. Ian Fleming, an active bird-watcher living in Jamaica, appropriated the name for his novel's lead character. He found it "flat and colourless," a fitting choice for a character intended to be "anonymous. . . a blunt instrument in the hands of the government." In Field Guide to Birds of the West Indies, Taryn Simon (*1975) casts herself as James Bond (1900-1989) the ornithologist, and identifies, photographs, and classifies all the birds that appear within the twenty-four films of the James Bond franchise. The appearance of many of the birds was unplanned and virtually undetected, operating as background noise for whatever set they happened to fly into. Simon's ornithological discoveries occupy a liminal space-confined within the fiction of the James Bond universe and yet wholly separate from it. This taxonomy of 331 birds is a precise consideration of a new nature found in an alternate reality. FIELD GUIDE TO BIRDS OF THE WEST INDIES, Macmillan, 1947, first edition, remants of small label and a stamped name to the upper right corner of the f.e.p., tape stains to the upper and lower margins of the verso of the half-title (which have become faint ghosts to the half-title page itself), else a vg+/near fine copy with dust-wrapper flaps laid in. Profusely illustrated. Bond was an ornithologist specializing in birds of the Caribbean and while living in Jamaica, met and befriended Ian Fleming, who like wise was an avid bird watcher. First Macmillan edition, first printing; the edition that gave the world the name "James Bond". Ian Fleming, seeing his copy of this book at his Goldeneye estate in Jamaica, took the author's name for his literary creation. An exhaustive handbook of more than 400 species of birds found throughout the Caribbean, the work was first published under the title Birds of the West Indies in 1936. Fleming had sketched out his character and was looking to name it when he spied this retitled and revised Macmillan edition on his bookshelves and saw the potential of the author's name, James Bond. Fleming later told Mrs Bond, "it struck me that this name, brief, unromantic and yet very masculine was just what I needed and so James Bond II was born" (Letters, p. 280). Fleming contacted James Bond for permission to use his name, to which Bond replied, "fine with it" (Buckland, p. 19), unaware that his name would thereby become synonymous across the world with one of the defining characters of 20th-century literature and of British popular culture. By way of recompense, Fleming offered Bond the opportunity to christen "some particularly horrible species of bird. Ian Fleming" (Letters, p. 280). Fleming and James Bond met only once, when the ornithologist and his wife attended lunch at Goldeneye in 1963. Fleming recorded that the Bonds were "a charming couple who are amused by the whole joke" (Pearson, p. 364). On the occasion, Fleming presented Bond with a copy of You Only Live Twice with the inscription, "To The real James Bond from the thief of his identity, Ian Fleming". In homage to Bond, in the 2002 film Die Another Day, Pierce Brosnan picks up a copy of the book in a Havana hotel, and takes cover as an ornithologist "just here for the birds". Damien Buckland, Collection Editions: James Bond, 2016; Fergus Fleming, ed., The Man with the Golden Typewriter: Ian Fleming's James Bond Letters, 2015; John Pearson, The Life of Ian Fleming, 1966. Octavo. Original brown cloth, spine and front cover lettered in black, map endpapers printed in brown. With dust jacket. Colour frontispiece by F. L. Jacques, half-tone photographic plate, and line drawings throughout the text by Alexander Seidel. Spine ends a little rumpled, contents mildly toned but clean; price-clipped jacket slightly rubbed with trivial tears to fold ends, rear panel and flap lightly toned, else bright: a near-fine copy in very good jacket.

  • Philadelphia, PA, The Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, 1936. 8vo (19.0 x 13.0 cm). xxv, 456 pp.; full colour frontispiece, numerous fine engravings. Original grey buckram with gilt title on the front board and spine. Map on front endpapers. = The sought-after first edition, first printing of this well-illustrated and influential book on Caribbean birds. Ian Fleming named his world-famous fictional spy after its author, the ornithologist James Bond (1900-1989), after purchasing this work while staying in Jamaica. This is a must for James Bond aficionados. Ian Fleming, an accomplished birder himself, explained the use of Bond's name to Bond's wife as follows: "It struck me that this brief, unromantic, Anglo-Saxon and yet very masculine name was just what I needed, and so a second James Bond was born." The ornithologist was born in Philadelphia, worked there as a curator of the bird department of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and often visited the West Indies, including Jamaica, where the two men met. The "real" James Bond never complained about Fleming using his name. Provenance: the H.S.P.A. Experiment Station Library, with a label on the spine, their library stamp on the front pastedown, and a small blind-stamp on the title and one text leaf; small, weak damp-stain in top gutter; skilful repair to two text leaf margins; otherwise an excellent, clean copy, with the boards clean and fresh, and the gilt lettering strong.
