"The 1980's and after has created a typical post-modern anxiety with the advent of Salman Rushdie as an influential Diaspora writer. This book is conceptualized around a series of topics like post-modern anxiety, identity, politics, national and self-definition, the problem of exile and Diaspora and an interest to examine the way Indian English Literature has established itself and set up as a separate discipline. While the bright and brilliant promises about Indian English Literature rejuvenate us, some pertinent questions hang above us related to our identity, historiography and the political and national affiliation of a writer. Does the absence of a national identity affect the tone of a creative writer and the mindset of his readers as well? Does the post colonial space invite and initiate the Indian English writers and the Diaspora writers to take their 'self' and 'national identity' as the metaphor of their creativity? How do they define and justify themselves? What do they mean by Indianness, nation and narration, women issues, subaltern condition, nativism, post-colonialism, post-modernism and essentialism? What are their literary and extra-literary concerns? Do they succeed in giving a clear image to the indigenous culture and the narrative traditions of India? What linguistic and stylistic innovations are being introduced by the post-colonial writers? This book is a humble attempt to point out some of these issues by the editor and the contributors. The present analytical study will prove an ideal reference book to students, researchers and teachers of Indian English Literature. (jacket). Seller Inventory # 64851

The Santiniketan murals: a brief history/R. Siva Kumar. 3. The painted murals of Santiniketan: a note on their techniques/Arun K. Nag. 4. A catalogue of the Santiniketan murals/R. Siva Kumar. Select Bibliography. "Santiniketan holds a unique position in the cultural history of India, as the embodiment of a concept and an ideal which was part of what is largely regarded as a cultural renaissance in the early part of the century. The cultural leaders and artists who committed themselves to Santiniketan felt a need to view all the arts and crafts as a single connected panorama in order to revitalize the roots of their traditions. They wanted to see art as part of daily life, not just in museums, picture galleries or the audience halls of the affluent. They also wanted to keep alive the priceless methods and techniques that had contributed to forming the distinct personality of the country's age-old visual tradition of murals. As a result they turned Santiniketan into a rich open air museum of modern Indian art with several in situ murals, some of which are landmarks of Indian art history. Seller Inventory # 10194

Whatever he touched turned into gold. Touching the kindred points of heaven and earth he was both a man of action and of contemplation, a seer and also a pioneer in cooperative movement, a writer of most profound poems and an author of children's text-books including books of science, a nationalist and internationalist a man of royal grandeur like his grandfather, a prince, and an ascetic like his father, a maharshi. The volumes of the Project on the History of Science Philosophy and Culture in Indian Civilization aims at discovering the main aspects of India's heritage and present them in an interrelated way. These volumes in spite of their unitary look recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. In fact contributions are made by different scholars with different ideological persuasions and methodological approaches. The project is marked by what may be called methodological pluralism. In spite of its primarily historical character this project both in its conceptualization and execution has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. Purvamimamsa is one of the six systems of Indian philosophy and a very ancient one. The Jaimini Sutras consisting of 2700 sutras arranged in 12 chapters are the primary source of Purvamimamsa. It is developed into two schools Bhatta school initiated by Kumarila Bhatta and Prabhakara. Mimamsa has made rich contribution to the areas of epistemology linguistics and programme organization. The concept of the intrinsic validity of cognition including the impersonal nature of the Veda and acceptance of the cognition of certain entities such as ethical values beyond the empirical means of cognition are its contribution to epistemology. Considering the language as autonomous at word sentence and discourse levels and developing a distinct hermeneutics to interpret to the Vedic passages and developing the rules of interpretation are its contribution to linguistics. Developing detailed guidelines for organizing the ritual programme is however its most important contribution. The rules of interpretation evolved by Purvamimamsa for the purpose of interpreting Vedic passages are so fundamental and universal that these can be applied to interpret any other scripture. These are utilized by other Indian philosophical systems Dharmasastras and ancient Indian judicial system. Maxw. Seller Inventory # 59150
