About this Item: 1966. Hard Cover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. Please see any and all photos connected with this listing. No Dustjacket. A bit scuffed but all pages intact and legible. Good reading copy. Clean. No store stamps. Loose front cover. --- --- This is, by any standards, a superb novel, fresh, convincing, compassionate and intensely readable. . . . .It is not often that a libel action involves a whole profession. But when Sir Thomas Gilling, one of the physicians to the Royal Family, a Fellow of the Royal Society and consultant to one of the great London hospitals, sues David Line, Professor of Surgery and head of the experimental unit at the Metropolitan Hospital almost every figure of importance in the world of medicine finds himself involved. . . . .Yet as the story progresses it becomes increasingly clear to both men that it is their own character, their own history, their own life that is the focus of attention. The case will, in the end, be decided on what the jury thinks of them as people. Is Gilling a widely experienced, highly capable doctor nearing the end of a deservedly successful career, or is he just an old buffer who wants to hold on to place and power? Is Line a brilliant pioneer, obstructed by mediocrities in entrenched positions, or is he an erratic exhibitionist, exploiting the opportunities offered by television and the popular press? We see them as they appear to themselves and to the women who love or once loved them; we see how life has made them what they are. Fascinating as the medical details involved in the case are, the real questions to be judged are those of character and personality. . . . . The two aspects of this absorbing story give full scope to John Rowan Wilson's unique combination of talents. As a novelist he has long been recognised on both sides of the Atlantic for his narrative power, originality and sheer professional skill. One of his earlier books, Means to an End, was a Literary Guild Choice in the U.S.A. J. D. Scott, in a review for the Sunday Times, wrote that its pace and realism would do credit to Simenon or Raymond Chandler: and The Times Literary Supplement found it 'a highly readable gripping story that actually contrives to say something un-platitudinous and true about the will to success and the vacuum at the heart of power.' As a doctor and surgeon who knows the world of medical politics at first hand he is a thorough master of his materials at every point. His most recent book, Margin of Safety, which told the story of the development of poliomyelitis vaccine, was described by Brian Inglis in the New Statesman as 'a model of how a medical work designed for lay consumption should be written: lucid, fair and remarkably readable'. . . . .These qualities, heightened and enhanced by wit and compassion, combine to make Hall of Mirrors a novel as memorable as it is enthralling. . . Brandeis. Through a "joint endeavors fund" and regularly supplied lists of requests, these two men, working together, influenced foreign and domestic policy, manipulated the media and placed their own disciples in the burgeoning federal bureaucracy, lobbying against the collectivist legislation of the New Dealís "First Hundred Days," including acts Brandeis later joined his brethren in holding unconstitutional, they helped draft what has come to be called the "Second New Deal." Remarkably, despite the breadth and duration of this relationship, it never became public knowledge, despite the assistance or at least acquiescence of persons at the highest levels of governrnent~ presidents, senators, congressmen, cabinet secretaries, even other judges~as well as writers and editors of newspapers, magazines, and national law reviews. The relationship was remarkable in one other way: in 1939, Felix Frankfurter was himself appointed to the High Court. And so it turned out that Frankfurter came to the bench fully trained in the art of being an extra~judicially active Supreme Court judge. The Brandeis/Frankfurter Connection is a story that has never before been told. Stretching from Cambridge to Albany, from London to Washington, from 1916 to 1962, its supporting players include Presidents Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt, John Maynard Keynes, Neils Bohr, Raymond Maley, and David Lloyd George. The book sheds new light on major events in American political history~from the use of the Brandeis/Frankfurter connection to influence public opinion in the Sacco~Vanzetti case to Frankfurter's stewardship of FDR's programs to bring the U.S. into battle against Hitler. But most of all, The Brandeis/Frankfurter Connection is a story of two very different men who came together secretly and against all established norms for judicial behavior to effect social and political reform from Supreme Court chambers. Brandeis~the visionary, the giant of American law, the ex~corporate lawyer turned "people's attorney"~found it nearly impossible to set aside his reformist passions once he had been appointed to the Court. Harvard Law Professor Frankfurter~a man of unabashed patriotism, boundless energy, and intense personal loyalty~gained access to the major political figures of his time, as well as an unparalleled inside view of the Court. Unerringly documented, The Brandeis/ Frankfurter Connection challenges many cherished notions about the role of Supreme Court justices and the myths surrounding the highest court in the land. About this Item: The History Press Ltd, United Kingdom, 2014. Paperback. Condition: New. New edition. Language: English . Brand New Book. A century after Queen Victoria s death, debate still rages surrounding her relationship with her gillie, John Brown. Were they ever married? What was the extraordinary hold he had over her? This biography aims to shed new light on these questions and to discover the truth behind Brown s hold on his royal employer. Following the death of Prince Albert in 1861, the Queen found solace in the companionship of John Brown, who had commenced his royal employment as a stable hand. He became The Queen s Highland Servant in 1865 and rose to be the most influential member of the Scottish Royal Household. While the Queen could be brusque and petulant with her servants, family and ministers, she submitted to Brown s fussy organization of her domestic life, his bullying and familiarity without a murmur. Despite warnings of his unpopularity with her subjects by one Prime Minister, the Queen was adamant that Brown would not be sacked. The Queen s confidence was rewarded when Brown saved her from an assassination attempt, after which he was vaunted as a public hero. The author reveals the names of republicans and disaffected courtiers who related gossip about Queen Victoria and John Brown and their purported marriage and child, and identifies those who plotted to have Brown dismissed. Based on research in public, private and royal archives, as well as diaries and memoirs of those who knew Brown and interviews with his surviving relatives, this text analyzes the relationship between Queen Victoria and Brown.
