A vinyl sheet has been added to protect the front cover. Among the subjects included are: The Highland Rim, minerals and caves; Iron furnaces; Oil potential; Lime works and a sumac-mill; Military land grants with names and amounts; Names of early settlers; Block houses; John Holland, the first licensed storekeeper; Early Mills and distilleries; Slave owners; County organization and boundaries; County and court officials; The execution of a slave for murder; Other court cases, involving murder, harboring slaves, forgery, etc.; Judges, Court clerks, Grand Jurors, and Lawyers; Soldiers in the War of 1812; Civil War with support for the Confederacy; Federal soldiers in "Camp Charlotte" in 1863; Churches; Schools; Businesses, Secret Societies; the towns of Charlotte (the county seat), Dickson, White Bluff, Burns Station, and Gillam; and other items of interest. The full-color front cover is protected with a vinyl sheet. The book includes excerpts from two hard-to-find vintage publications: Southwest Louisiana Biographical and Historical, edited by William Henry Perrin and originally published by the Gulf Publishing Company in 1891, and Louisiana, a Guide to the State, compiled by Workers of the Writers' Program of the WPA in 1941. In addition to the usual data found in county histories, this book includes such varied subjects as incidents in the life of Leon Latiolais, a talented fellow who was not above pulling a practical joke, the primitive life style of the people of Acadian descent, and a list of one year's railroad shipments. 'Benjamin Kaplan, the Royall Professor of Law Emeritus at Harvard Law School and a former justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court, died August 18, 2010. A pre-eminent copyright scholar, Kaplan co-wrote the first casebook on copyright, with Yale Law Professor Ralph Brown '57 in 1960. His 1967 seminal text, 'An Unhurried View of Copyright,' grew out of a series of lectures on copyright he delivered at Columbia as part of the James S. Carpentier Lectures series.
