Intellectual Property Rights (IPRs) are granted by governments to attempt to correct a market failure that produces less than optimal amounts of investments in innovative activity. Patents are used to protect products and processes. It is often less costly to reverse engineer a product than to undertake the Research and Development (R&D) to create the innovation. In the absence of any laws preventing companies from engaging in reverse engineering or similar activities and then marketing their copies all firms would wish to be the copy cat firm and soon there would be no innovations to copy. Innovations are viewed as a very important factor in increasing welfare for societies. IPRs grant the owner the exclusive right to prevent a third party from using reproducing selling exporting or importing the product or process that is protected. In exchange the owner must disclose all information relevant to duplicating the product or process. This provides the firm with a temporary monopoly in which they can potentially earn monopoly rents. In exchange for exclusive marketing rights their acquired knowledge is made available to the public. The potential profits available to a firm induce it to undertake expensive and risky R&D. 260 pp.

The major risk in the globalised world is country risk arising out of intrusion and investment in alien environments characterised by political financial and economic uncertainties in addition to transfer risk which arises owing to transfer products and processes in the event of liberalised factor mobility. The already widening global inequality will be further fuelled by educational inequality in appropriating opportunities. Bad governance itself will be a risk adjoined with governance inseparability risk associated with inefficient changing transactions. Country risks resulting in income disparities reduce overall welfare at the same time increasing inequality. The emergence of regional blocs in trade and culture and the anti globalisation movements caricaturing neo protectionism by more developed groups and the plight of less developed classes and regions in an eye opener in decentralised globalism. 302 pp.

In the present times, we are all facing a crisis in terms of choice between more consumerism or growth and development which is more sustainable in the long run. Our generation is exposed to new challenges of survival and knowledge explosion. One has too many choices in selection of goods to purchase and consume, occupation to follow, or even higher study to pursue. With internet revolution and liberalization of economies, world is a small place. The Indian market is flooded with international quality of goods and services. Marketers are using all tactics to woo the customers and acquire a larger market share. We are exposed to hundreds of advertisements every day but can not recall even five at the moment. Thus retention value has gone down but with a click of a button, we can have access to information much faster. Blogs, videos, and first hand experiences are shared about products and services in detail. Thus making it more challenging for sellers to advertise. Marketing firms have to devise new tactics to make their presence felt on the market scene. The present book is an attempt to evaluate some of the marketing strategies adopted by modern marketers recently. Some of the concepts and practices are relatively lesser known yet. They are still at a testing phase and their outcomes are yet to be evaluated but the revolution in terms of on-line trading is here to stay and creating new issues and challenges for brick and mortar firms in business. Case studies have been included in order to elaborate. (jacket).

The present position of rural workers in labour market and rural non farm sector in India/W.N. Salve. The experience of the implementation of reforms reveals not only the poor are becoming poorer but the rich want to become richer by illegal means. Further they have succeeded in their efforts. The rise in corruption during the first decade of reforms in all the spheres of life is palpably visible. Nothing ever happens to those who do indulge in corruption and abuse of power and those who loot the exchequer and misappropriate public funds. On the other hand it is commonly argued that corruption exits in every country and nothing can be done about it. But the point to be noted in that it is a very serious problem now and reforms interalia have contributed to its growth. In India for instance looking at India's post independence period one finds that 1950's 1960's and 1970's were the decades when corruption was at its lowest level. There was only some creeping type of corruption. In 1980s it appears that the corruption started walking. However it is running after 1991. It is because of the fact that its growth is the antithesis between economic development and ethical development which is directly and indirectly supported by the new economic policy. At this juncture we have to reflect on the point what some have argued.

Lakes and reservoirs hold a great promise as a source of freshwater demand of which will grow with passage of time. Unfortunately these ecosystems are being neglected and destroyed in rural as well as in urban areas. The main problem in their management involves maintenance of water quality and morphometry responsible for water holding capacity. Innumerable lakes and reservoirs scattered all over the country need an urgent management plans for their protection rehabilitation and conservation. By suitable remedial measures these water bodies can provide an ideal recreational site apart from other benefits like fish production charging of groundwater table conditioning of the climate etc. To achieve this there is a need of clear cut lake and reservoir protection strategy as an integral component of natural water policy. In the present book on Ecology of lakes and reservoirs an attempt has been made to bring out the present status of lakes and reservoirs. It includes the physical chemical and biological aspects. The proposed book include 17 research articles of eminent scientists representing different lakes and reservoirs in India. Today environmental education is made compulsory at school and college levels. Even in recent years many graduate and postgraduate courses have ecology as an important subject. As a result there is a need for comprehensive book on Ecology of lakes and reservoirs. This gap has been filled by the book. The proposed book will be useful for ecologists fishery biologists students scientists and policy makers as a reference material. It will also reviews the progress made in the field in the past few decades. 202 pp.

The present book on Higher Education: Access, Equity and Excellence is a brilliant academic work having an indepth analysis of higher education, its capability creation domain, equity and excellence contents. The post industrial development, in the globalization era has entered into a different wave length wherein labour demand for work has been reduced via speeding up of mechanical automation and robot system of work culture. Further, the technological push factor working through innovation and thus creating a new knowledge demand for industrial workers in India and elsewhere has produced its worst effects in terms of reduced hour of works for regular wage employment and its worsening effects on conditions and nature of employment. We have as a result of it vast doses of contract employment and a set of new conditionality in terms of training and new knowledge. This book has altogether twenty-six articles spanning over three parts entitled Higher education and development linkages, higher education and widening social groups gaps in terms of access, equity and excellence, and higher education and its skill development linkages and its shrinking domain in terms of geography, quantum and equity in productivity capability of the per unit workers in terms of reduced hours of work frictionalisation of employment and off the job training programmes in large numbers. The whole analysis is arranged in scientific manner and provides evidential analysis on these issues. (jacket).
