Heath status of the tribal population is marked by all the negative features that one may find in morbidity and mortality. Poverty illiteracy malnutrition lack of personal hygiene unsanitary conditions and absence of health education poor mother and child health services and poor coverage of the national preventive programmes have been found responsible for the poor health of the tribal communities. Besides poor coverage the tribal communities have their own systems of medicines dispensed through the medium of shamans herbalists and witchdoctors which also act as a barrier in healthcare programmes. Finally some specific genetic diseases such as sickle cell anaemia G 6 PD deficiency etc. are largely located in the tribal hinterlands. The government of India has implemented specific programmes for the healthcare development of the tribal communities and there have been encouraging results. However much is required to be known in the area of tribal morbidity and traditional systems of medicines. The present work is an attempt to being together the clinical and biogenetic aspects. Role of geomorphology in land use planning a study from super cyclone affected areas of Jagatsinghpur district Orissa/K.C. Das. Index. Ecology is of great concern to every society because it depends upon its environment for resources that safeguard its survival. Resource mobilization has been largely cultural in nature. Less technological skill means less exploitation of natural resources and advanced technology means more aggressive resource exploitation. Today undoubtedly maddening consumerism has resulted in serious ecological crises. It is of mounting concern to politicians bureaucrats and both social and physical scientists and activists to ponder over the issue and provide a viable strategy for conservation as well as development. Sustainable development is the key word today unless we have a fear psychosis towards our dangerous future we cannot help ourselves but continue to destroy. It is well known that India is one of the 12 mega biodiversity countries and holds 8.1 per cent of the world's total biodiversity. Being a predominantly agriculture based country India also has a mix of wild and cultivated habitats giving rise to specialised biodiversity. Therefore enhancing and conserving environmental resources becomes a big challenge today. The book discusses the above issues substantiated with cases from various communities in India. It will be of interest to administrators anthropologists sociologists and environmentalists. 304 pp. Seller Inventory # 61653

Two species shisham and kikar are virtually indispensable owing to their importance for various purposes and their acceptance for plantation on a wider scale both under social forestry/agroforestry and national afforestation programmes. Where shisham (Dalbergia sissoo) is distributed primarily in the foothills of Himalayas kikar (Acacia nilotica) has wider distribution covering large tracts of sub tropical and tropical parts of the country. Both of these species are part of the natural landscape of the country. Both the species are considered as quite hardy in nature especially to withstand droughts and therefore classified among xerophytes. They are found to grow on a variety of soils under different fertility regimes surviving on inhospitable sites also. However even in spite of these attributes a serious die back problem has been noted in these species covering almost all the age groups and under almost all the situations where they are found growing. This includes forest areas farmer fields road side/canal side plantations dry areas wet soils etc. This has virtually challenged the very survival of these species as at some locations the mortality recorded is as high as 80 per cent. Although a number of factors were found responsible for the mortality of shisham and kikar including environmental stress poor drainage fungal and pest infections etc. yet no single factor could be ascertained as the main triggering factor for this malady. Such a localized over drawl of ground water has to be compensated adequately by harnessing surplus monsoonal flows along with expansion of water storage capacities in enhancing the water availability. Stress would need to be laid on conjunctive use of surface and ground water in irrigated commands. Tube wells and wells are the major sources of irri. Seller Inventory # 63966

The paradigm of sustainable development is an outcome of the concept of developmentalism and environmentalism. Population explosion rapid industrialization and exploitation of natural resources is resulting into ecological imbalance scarcity of resources pollution and many such problems. This ecological crisis and fight for the acquisition of powerful resources give rise to environmental conflict. Today this conflict and crisis has become not only a threat but also a matter of global concern. Even development becomes a threat if it is no sustainable. The concept of sustainable development advocates a balance between demand and supply of resources. United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) declared that human beings are at the center of concerns for sustainable development its ultimate goal being human welfare. 244 pp. Seller Inventory # 72508

Section II: Papers in Hindi Transmission, mobility, adaptation and concrete expression of the Rama theme among different communities and regions in India and outside is the finest example of the power of the ‘oral word’ that transcends all boundaries, be they geographic, temporal, social or literary. It provides for plurality, diversity and continuity of the tradition transcending the rigid boundaries of the text to flow in multiple streams and directions meeting with tributaries and rivulets along the way. In order to explore, understand and comprehend this living and vibrant Rama tradition in Indian culture, the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, in 2008, convened an international conference Ramkatha: Ankan, Manchan aur Vaachan under its ongoing project, Living Traditions of Ramkatha and Mahabharata. The present volume consists of select papers presented in this conference along with others that were specially invited from eminent scholars in the field. The papers here range from textual to oral, performance and pictorial renderings of Rama theme both in traditional and contemporary contexts, covering a large geographic area and diverse communities. For example, Bhil Ram Sitama ni Varta, Kunkana Ramkatha, Gond Ramayani, Rama traditions among the Ramnamis of Chhattisgarh, Ramman of Garhwal, Bundeli Ramkatha, Mewati Ramkatha and Ramkatha traditions among the Khasis, to name a few. The volume also contains essays on traditional and modern presentations of Rama theme in Southeast Asia. The volume is broadly organised under four themes: sacred geography, narrative, performance, and pictorial traditions. However, several of them overlap and flow into one another. The book is further divided into two sections: the first contains papers in English and the second in Hindi. This book is a significant addition to the existing literature on Ramayana and Ramkatha traditions and of great value to scholars of Indian culture, folklorists, anthropologists and Indologists.
