About this Item: Liverpool University Press, United Kingdom, 2001. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, created in 1569, covered a wide spectrum of faiths and languages. The nobility, who were the main focus of Polishness, were predominantly Catholic, particularly from the second half of the seventeenth century; the peasantry included Catholics, Protestants, and members of the Orthodox faith, while nearly half the urban population, and some 10 per cent of the total population, was Jewish. The partition of Poland at the end of the eighteenth century and the subsequent struggle to regain Polish independence raised the question of what the boundaries of a future state should be, and who qualified as a Pole. The partitioning powers, for their part, were determined to hold on to the areas they had annexed: Prussia tried to strengthen the German element in Poland; the Habsburgs encouraged the development of a Ukrainian consciousness in Austrian Galicia to act as a counterweight to the dominant Polish nobility; and Russia, while allowing the Kingdom of Poland to enjoy substantial autonomy, treated the remaining areas it had annexed as part of the tsarist monarchy. When Poland became independent after the First World War more than a third of its population were thus Ukrainians, Belarusians, Germans, Jews, and Lithuanians, many of whom had been influenced by nationalist movements. The core articles in the volume focus especially on the triangular relationship between Poles, Jews, and Germans in western Poland, and between the different national groups in what are today Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine. In addition, the New Views section investigates aspects of Jewish life in pre-partition Poland and in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. There are also the regular Review Essay and Book Review sections. CONTRIBUTORS Adam Bartosz, Eleonora Bergman, Abraham Brumberg, Justin D. About this Item: Deep University Press, United States, 2015. Hardback. Condition: New. 2nd. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. This timely and valuable contribution led by Dr Isabelle Druc, a renowned ceramic specialist, brings the spotlight back to the study of pottery and its myriad relationships with people. This handy guide will be useful for both students and professionals interested in learning to investigate, with precision, the composition of raw materials and their transformation by people. It enables the identification and description of their choices that inform about the critical stuff (techniques, identity, values, landscape) of ancient cultures. (George Lau, Sainsbury Research Unit, University of East Anglia, UK) This practical guide to macroscopic ceramic analysis will be of great value to many archaeologists, regardless of their knowledge of geology or previous experience with compositional analyses. The detailed descriptions and illustrations should be particularly helpful in the initial stages of analysis by facilitating the definition of paste groups (based on their constituent minerals, rock fragments, and textures); inferences about production techniques; and the selection of meaningful samples for more detailed petrographic and chemical studies. The book also serves as a clear, concise guide to terminology commonly used by ceramicists and geologists. (Jason Sherman, Dept of Anthropology, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, USA) Indispensable manual for all archaeologists interested in giving a thorough and objective basis to the discussion on the organization of ceramic production and distribution using the concept of chaine operatoire. An important contribution to help the selection of samples for more advanced archaeometric analysis. (Krzysztof Makowski, Pontificia Universidad Catolica del Peru) ABSTRACT: This manual is the first of its sort describing the use of the new portable digital microscope for analysis of archaeological ceramics in the field or in the laboratory. It is presented like a geological atlas with a description of the most common minerals and lithic fragments found in ancient ceramic pastes to help archaeologists identify what they see under the microscope. Identification of manufacture and technological features are also addressed. An analytic protocol is proposed along with further suggestions of geology, granulometry and digital image analysis to help with the constitution of groups of similar composition and paste texture. This leads to higher interpretative levels of the ceramic data. The manual is abundantly illustrated with pictures of archaeological and ethnographic ceramic pastes and raw materials. It is a reference book for all involved in the analysis of archaeological ceramics and a major tool to help study, classify and choose the best fragments for archaeometric analysis. An excellent addition to the study of archaeological and ethnographic ceramics. Druc and her technical collaborators were able to synthesize both experience and analytical rigor in a must-have reference work for all interested in understanding human behavior from the study of ceramic pastes. (Maria Beatriz Cremonte, CONICET-Universidad Nacional de Jujuy, Argentina) A milestone manual for the analysis of ceramic technology in the field and in the laboratory. This book, thanks to an excellent corpus of illustrations, provides useful tools for quantitative and qualitative identification of macro- components in the ceramic paste. Doing so, it supports scholars to better focus the analysis and selection of the samples from the very first stages of the research, and it also helps to direct decisions and field procedures. Finally in this study, organized as an atlas, the author makes an admirable effort to standardize nomenclature and classification terms, effort which will influence the work of many in the coming years. (Carolina Orsini, Curator, Museo delle Culture, Milano, Italy). Seller Inventory # APC9781939755216

The map was originally issued as the eastern part of Blaeu's 6-sheet wall map of Lithuania. The map shows the course of the Dnieper River from Cherkasy to the estuary on the Black Sea. The map is in strip style with two vertical maps following the course of the river, each decorated with cartouches and compass roses and including numerous lengthy notations describing the cataracts, cities, salt mines, fortresses, and the historical traditions of the Kozaks. Putti flank a large cartouche at bottom. For more informations please klick the below link. Seller Inventory # 8292
