About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, 2014. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. When David moves to Ottawa, it is supposed to be an escape from his dysfunctional home-and a chance to find himself in new surroundings. But his college experience isn t the type of adventure he had in mind. Stranded with no support network, he begins losing touch with reality and experiencing psychotic symptoms. And when family intervenes and doctors confirm the worst, he finds himself with a devastating new diagnosis: paranoid schizophrenia, a condition that affects one in a hundred people, yet is still largely misunderstood. David s Journey With Schizophrenia: Insight into Recovery follows author David LaChapelle through the onset of his mental illness and the many struggles he faces as he perseveres in moving his life forward. From hospitalizations and medications, to finding hope and healing through spirituality, his words convey a valuable first-hand account of life with schizophrenia-as well as his personal insights into the recovery process. Peppered with encouragement for others and surprising moments of levity, David s journey provides some much-needed understanding of the suffering those with mental illness face on a daily basis while embodying the idea that individuals with schizophrenia have the right to live a normal and happy life-minus any stigma from society. About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2012. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. When David LaChapelle begins attending Carleton University everything seems to be going in the right direction. But he begins experiencing unexplainable changes in his thought processes which eventually devolves into a full-blown psychotic state. He tries to get help but is turned down, told by the admitting physician that he is fine and not in need of psychiatric care. Not until his family steps in and takes him to the hospital does he come close to receiving any treatment. While there, however, he meets Angela, a fellow patient he will later learn is also suffering from schizophrenia. For now, though, they will embark on a journey that takes them across Canada and beyond. Beginning first with short trips in the greater Toronto area-including a jaunt to nearby Niagara Falls where a perceived zombie attack necessitates a forced and narrow escape, David and Angela eventually decide a trip to Vancouver is in order. Pawning possessions, selling stocks, sleeping in McDonald s parking lots, and narrowly escaping arrest on a possible kidnapping charge, their escapades provide a rousing, rollicking ride as they traverse the Great White North until Dave finally receives the help he needs to heal and become healthy once more. A whirlwind tour of Canada, New York, and the psychological inner workings of a person with paranoid schizophrenia intertwine with LaChapelle s openness and bracing honesty to turn a frightening disease into a lighthearted, tragicomic romp full of action, hilarity, and more than a few surprises. As his mental state deteriorates, so too does the logic of the adventure, yet somehow he is able to keep it going, showing a resourcefulness not often expected of the mentally ill. A stirring, baffling, and altogether head-scratching caper, David s Adventure with Schizophrenia is as fascinating as it is entertaining. Seller Inventory # APC9781470124106

About this Item: Trinity University Press,U.S., United States, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. During the 1980s and 90s, the Resource Institute, headed by Jonathan White, held a series of floating seminars aboard a sixty-five-foot schooner featuring leading thinkers and writers from an array of disciplines. Over ten years, White conducted interviews, gathered in this collection, with the writers, scientists, and environmentalists who gathered on board to explore our relationship to the wild. White describes the conversations as the roots of an integrated community: While at first these roots may not appear to be linked, a closer look reveals that they are sustained in common ground. Beloved fiction writer Ursula K. Le Guin discusses the nature of language, microbiologist Lynn Margulis contemplates Darwin s career and the many meanings of evolution, and anthropologist Richard Nelson sifts through the spiritual life of Alaska s native people. Rounding out the group are writers Gretel Ehrlich, Paul Shepard, and Peter Matthiessen, conservationists Roger Payne and David Brower, theologian Matthew Fox, activist Janet McCloud, Jungian analyst James Hillman, poet Gary Snyder, and ecologist Dolores LaChapelle. By identifying the common link between these conversations, Talking on the Water takes us on a journey in search of a deeper understanding of ourselves and the environment.
