About this Item: Arcade Publishing, New York, New York, U.S.A., 1997. Hard Cover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Some B/W Photos (illustrator). First Edition. Gift inscribed by both authors on free end page. From Library Journal The Shumskys' illuminating narrative is based on Mendel Cohen's memoirs of his tenure at the Jordanian royal court in the late Thirties and Forties and on the Shumskys' own recent visit to Jordan. From 1937 to the outbreak of the Arab/Israeli war of 1948, Cohen, a Jew born in Jerusalem, worked as a carpenter at the royal court of Emir Abdullah. The book (put together by Cohen's daughter and her husband) is a fascinating account of how these two men, with "incompatible political aspirations [and] different faiths" developed a bond that "transcended their differences." This work is cultural, historical, inspiring, optimistic, and, although simplistic, gives us much information while arousing reflection. The bibliography is highly selective but excellent. Highly recommended for Middle East collections.?Edward G. McCormack, Univ. of Southern Mississippi Gulf Coast, Long Beach Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Kirkus Reviews Fitting somewhere between the stories of Lawrence of Arabia and Anna and the king of Siam, this is nicely recounted by the Jewish carpenter's daughter and son-in-law, bracketed by their own pertinent observations. Actually, Mendel Cohen was more than a simple carpenter. He was a contractor to the king. Abdullah, the only Arab chief known to have talked directly with Israeli leaders, was the first ruler of Transjordan (as it was then known), an entity created shortly before the birth of Israel. Cohen, a native of Jerusalem and fluent in Arabic, was hired in 1937 by then-Emir Abdullah to refurbish his palace in Amman. Work led to friendship, and Cohen soon became familiar with the royal household and the inevitable court intrigue. Portraits of Abdullah's sons, the slow Naif and the explosive Talal (father of Jordan's present king, Hussein), the noble characters, and the wily courtiers are all drawn neatly. The stories related here range from the operation of the harem to feasts in the emir's tent, where an entire roasted camel was not an unusual entree. More than a royal backstairs expos‚, this is a thoughtful text, respectful of Arab ways and the teachings of Islam as well as the lessons of the writers' own heritage. Biblical history is felt as a current presence. The forces of enmity that finally separated Cohen and the king (in 1948, Cohen fought in the Israel Defense Force against the Arab forces commanded by Abdullah) have not abated, yet years later, visiting Amman at the invitation of Hussein, Cohen's daughter found reason in her father's experiences to hope for peace. An engaging story and a vision of friendship, seen perhaps through rose-tinted glasses, but nevertheless a rare upbeat view in a particularly dim season for Mideast peace. (8 pages b&w photos, not seen) -- Copyright 1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved. Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 042426

Literally as new and still in the publisher's protective shrink-wrap.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 237 pages; 237 p. : ill. (some col.) ; 32 cm. Summary: Whether a pirate, a gunslinger, a gangster, or a desert fiend, you arenÂ’t born an outlaw-you become one. These rebels rose up against injustice; they yearned for great open spaces. From the monopoly of the maritime powers to the advent of industrialism, they defied everything, and in doing so they signed their own death warrants. From train robbers Jesse James and Bruce Reynolds, to Lawrence of Arabia and IRA-activist Bobby Sands, to duos like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday or Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid - their armed exploits are wellknown, but their true cause has often gone unheard. Signed on title page. Ex-library with usual library markings. DJ has some wear and soiling, including crossed out library barcode. Scott Anderson is an American novelist, journalist, and a veteran war correspondent. He wrote novels Triage, Moonlight Hotel, The Man Who tried to Save the World, and War Zones. He is a frequent contributor to the New York Times Magazine, GQ, Esquire, Men's Journal, Vanity Fair and other publications. Anderson grew up in East Asia, primarily in Taiwan and Korea, where his father was an agricultural advisor for the American government. His career began with a 1994 article in Harper's Magazine on the Northern Ireland events. The 2007 movie The Hunting Party starring Richard Gere and Terrence Howard, is partially based on his work in Bosnia. The 2009 drama film Triage starring Colin Farrell, Paz Vega and Sir Christopher Lee, is based on his novel. Lawrence in Arabia, his latest book, narrates the experiences of T. E. Lawrence in Arabia and explores the complexity of the Middle East. David Richards is a mid-level diplomat assigned to the sleepy, backwater Middle Eastern kingdom of Kutar in 1983. He spends his days on minor development projects and his nights seducing ambassador's wives. But when news of a tribal skirmish reaches the capital, Richards soon finds himself embroiled in a civil war as Colonel Munn, a pint-sized, blustery Texan assigned to Kutar, organizes a preemptive offensive against the rebellious forces. After Munn is immediately routed and the rebellion seizes control of the capitol, Richards holes up in the ramshackle Moonlight Hotel with fellow expatriates, determined to ride out the conflict despite the growing chaos and destruction that are heading towards them. This is a stunning and thrilling novel of war and survival from an acclaimed war correspondent. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated]. Seller Inventory # 74361
