About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2018. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from Report on the Maintenance and Improvement of the Quality of Egyptian Cotton and the Increase of Its Yield, 1920 We have here, I think, the first consideration that must be clearly borne in mind when approaching the problem from the producers standpoint. Production is, and must continue to be, diverse. Notonly so, but the various classes require to be produced in quantities approximating to the relative demand. Only so will the full intrinsic value for any particular class be realized. The argument applies equally to the lower, as to the higher, qualities; over-production within the class leads to a low, while under-production leads to a high, price. The step from over to under-production is, fortunately, sufficiently large owing to the ?exibility of the market, and this ?exibility we must now consider a little more in detail. The substitution of superior quality cotton to do the work of inferior can naturally-be more readily adopted than the reverse process. The market, therefore, shows greatest ?exibility in this direction. But such substitution will only take place, in the absence of any large shortage in total supply, when the price of the superior quality renders the proposition a paying one financially. Such conditions only hold good when the price Of superior quality is relatively low or, in other words, when the superior quality is fetching less than its intrinsic value. Such a condition implies a definite loss to the producer. In a country like Egypt, which possesses a monopoly in the production of certain classes of cotton, this probably implies a considerable total loss, since the reduction in price affects the entire out-turn Of the superior quality and not merely that portion which is used as a substitute. The rapidity with which Sakel has replaced other forms in cultivation in Lower Egypt affords an instance of this phenomenon. There is no doubt in my mind that the production of Sakel is far in excess of the demand for the manufacture of those types of thread for which it is peculiarly adapted. Its use has, therefore, been extended to other lines, for which it is not so pre-eminently suited, and such extension has been effected at the expense of the producer, in as far as Sakel is worth less per unit than it would be were only sufficient available to meet the needs Of that market which requires the qualities peculiar to Sakel. The present demand is, in fact, a forced one, due to the fact that, even at the depreciated price, the money return for the unit area of production is greater than that given by any other form. Excerpt from Memoirs of the Department of Agriculture in India: Notes on the Incidence and Effect of Sterility and of Cross-Fertilisation in the Indian Cottons The subject of the economic significance of Natural crossing in India has been dealt with in a recent memoir* and it is, therefore, unnecessary to do more here than recapitulate in the briefest manner the reasons which necessitate, prior to any attempt at improvement in a crop, the determination of the extent of cross fertilisation normally taking place. About this Item: Goodspeed Publishing Co., Chicago Illinois. Spiral/Comb. Condition: New. No Jacket. Limited Edition Reprint. Early days in New Madrid County, MO, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this booklet, reprinted from excerpts from three rare books: Goodspeed's 1888: History of Southeast Missouri, The State of Missouri (1904), and Missouri, a Guide to the "Show Me" State, a 1930s WPA project. The 67-page spiral bound 8 1/2 x 11" booklet, is photocopied on 60# paper. A vinyl sheet protects the front cover. The 1888 history covers the early development of this area and includes bios of prominent citizens. The 1904 book, written in connection with the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, gives an overview of the county at that date. The WPA excerpts take a look at the area from a 1939 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. Topics covered include: Location and Physical Characteristics; Francois and Joseph Lesieur and other early settlers; Col. George Morgan, who designed and named the city of New Madrid, and his adversary, Gen. James Wilkinson; Robert McKay, Richard Jones Waters; a chart showing the heads of families, and the number of women, boys, girls, slaves, horses, cattle, and bushels of corn in each family; the settlement of La Petite Prairie; Other notable settlers, including Capt. Charles Friend, John Ramsey, and Joseph Hunter; a terrific earthquake, as described to the Rev. Lorenzo Dow; Formation of the county and names of early officials; Courts and trials, including murder cases; a Gang of Desperadoes; the City of New Madrid -- businesses, newspapers, etc.; Point Pleasant and Portageville; Attorneys; , and other bits of history and trivia. Besides the names mentioned in the first part of the booklet, there are biographies of many county residents of yesteryear. Most are fairly lengthy, and often include ancestors, previous residences, children, in-laws, affiliations, war records, and business activities. In the course of this they often shed light on the early businesses, professions and institutions in the county. The biographies include: Judge Benton Akin, John Alley, John W. Arbuckle, George H. Baker, Seth S. Barnes, Pleasant Biship, Judge Benjamin F. Boyce, Jefferson M. Broughton, James E. Broughton, Henry E. Broughton, Arthur Broughton, Basil B. Crow, James P. Daniels, John A. About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2018. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from Report on the Maintenance and Improvement of the Quality of Egyptian Cotton and the Increase of Its Yield, 1920 We have here, I think, the first consideration that must be clearly borne in mind when approaching the problem from the producers standpoint. This new 89 page spiral-bound booklet is photocopied on 60# 8 1/2 x11" paper, with the print enlarged to fit the paper. The front cover is protected with a vinyl sheet. The Howe history, printed in 1845, covers the early development of this area, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glimpse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes and sightseeing possibilities. Gwathmey's 1937 contribution, sub-titled "Where the Western Migration Began" is a rich resource for the names of prominent families. Many of these early settlers and/or their descendants later migrated to the "western" states of Kentucky, Ohio, etc. Because the booklet is comprised of excerpts from several sources, there may occasionally be duplication of material. Among the many subjects discussed are: Physical Features of the Area, the University of Virginia; Recollections of prisoners housed in Revolution; Gov. Jefferson & Legislature Saved by Tarleton's Appetite, Jack Jouett, and a Swift Horse; a Description of Monticello; Bios of Peter Jefferson, Thomas Jefferson, Meriwether Lewis, William Wirt, author of "The British Spy," George Rogers Clark, James Monroe; the University of Virginia; the Lewis and Clark Expedition; Scottsville and the Staunton and James River Turnpike, the Steam Railroad and other Transportations Developments; Early Land Grants; First Justices, County Militia, etc. (1745); House of Burgesses members; Officers in the Revolution; a visit by Lafayette in 1824; Courthouse history and portraits, including Judge Archibald Stuart, Colonel John Bowcock, and many of the names listed below; Stately Homes of the County, Filippo Mazzei, a liberal, who brought vine cuttings and olive trees to Albemarle; Dr. Thomas Walker, physician turned explorer and spectulator, who named the Cumberland Gap; the Farmington Country Club; and other interesting bits of history and trivia. A separate section on Charlottsville includes Points of Interest and small maps of the town and the university.
