About this Item: D.K. Print World, 2017. Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Oil, known to man even prior to the contemporary era, has found a permanent niche in the lives of people throughout the world, serving a range of needs from morning to the moment we go to sleep. Our civilisation depends more heavily on oil than on any other single commodity. Our world is ruled by oil. Its widespread availability and use rose in prominence during the First World War, and since then the world has continued to depend more and more heavily on it for a multitudinous range of products and services, among which transportation is the most important. The history of oil dates back to the dawn of civilisation. For instance, one of the earliest civilisations that developed in the great river valleys of Mesopotamia used asphalt obtained from hand-dug pits for caulking boats, medicinal and ornamental purposes. Oil: Lighting up Our Lives unfolds a worldwide view of the history of the discovery, development and uses of oil, the global oil industry, how the geopolitics of oil and its availability has transformed the fate of nations, and the multifaceted role that it plays in our everyday lives. The reader is caught up in the excitement of early oil discoveries worldwide and in India, and their cataclysmic effects on men and nations, while at the same time absorbing its damaging effects on the environment. For all those with even a passing interest in history, politics, international affairs, global economies, sociology and the environment, and the significant role that oil plays in them, this well-researched book presents an engrossing and all-embracing picture of the role of oil through the ages and, more particularly in our time, and the development and power of the global oil industry. The author's compelling narrative, supplemented by 600 rare photographs, illustrations, lithographs and paintings are calculated to capture the imagination of the discerning reader. About this Item: Serindia Publications, 2003. Hardcover. Condition: New. Tibetan Vajrayana Buddhism is rapidly becoming a part of our cultural landscape, an element of human civilisation with its own universal appeal. Nevertheless public awareness remains limited concerning the great teachers and visionaries who over fourteen centuries formulated and expounded the system of thought which in the 21st century seems the most contemporary of the world religions. And yet there is a rich written tradition dating back at least 800 years documenting their lives and teachings, and an even more ancient tradition of portraiture in sculpture and painting which strove to capture both the physical and spiritual presence of these lamas. Portraits of the Masters unfolds for the first time a pictorial history of a dynamic and living religious tradition. A catalogue of 108 portrait bronzes of great masters of the Tibetan Buddhist traditions, it presents an innovative history of these teaching lineages based on and illustrated by the collection. Ranging in date from the 12th to 18th century, the sculptures in Portraits of the Masters span the most productive period in the history of Tibetan Buddhist art, providing unparalleled illustration of Tibetan portraiture?s long and varied history. Prefaced with a groundbreaking and comprehensive history of Tibetan portraiture, the collection is presented in five sections devoted to the Arhats, drawn from the Buddha?s original Indian disciples, and to the native Tibetan schools of the Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, and the Kadam and Geluk. Each section opens with a history of the tradition, written by leading scholars of Tibetan Buddhism. These histories not only illumine the lives of the great masters, but also eloquently articulate the basic precepts of their teachings. The sculptures are then examined within this context ? the history and images breathing life into each other. Printed Pages: 396. Seller Inventory # 75797

About this Item: I.K. International, 2017. Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Contents: 1. Evolution of Human Settlement. 2. Global Green Walkable Cities. 3. Transformation of national capital of India.4. Existing sustainable Indian cities. 5. Futuristic, smart and sustainable cities. 6. Intermodality and last mile connectivity. 7. New Smart cities. 8. Sustainable Idnian smart cities. Redefining Smart & Sustainable Cities, although has been conceived much earlier and has been continually refined over and over, the recent announcement of 100 Smart Cities by the Hon'ble Prime Minister of India, Mr Narendra Modi, and the spate of events thereafter, has made the release of the book rather accelerated. It unfolds for its readers the thus-far little-known story about smart cities that have existed since centuries and what the existing cities can learn from them. The author has taken interesting habitat traits and important data points right from prehistoric times to the modern day. Parallels have been drawn from various parts of the globe cutting across time - right from the Stone Age to the modern Digital Age. The authors have critically analyzed and shown that since the problems had the same set of root causes the solutions can also lie among some of the thriving and sustainable modern-day smart cities of the world. In fact, through careful extrapolation of habitat aspects the author has shown that many of the sustainable smart cities today have undergone similar deterioration for at least some time before these cities were restored and made truly smart. Each chapter weaves into it text and explanations written in a direct and simple manner and is interspersed with interesting pictures, drawings, infographics, and facts and figures directly relevant to the topic under discussion. This makes the book a very engaging and interesting read. (jacket). Seller Inventory # 121378

About this Item: Shubhi Publications, 2011. Hardcover. Condition: New. First edition. The book unravels with effective use of computer technology the uniformity, great proportions and geometry that the Hindu Temple Architecture is based upon. The book also challenges and readdresses the predominant theories of temple architecture like the Vastu Purush Mandala and the Sri Yantra. It sets forth the theory that there is an evident micro level integration of dimensions and proportions which all originate from the idol, set in the womb of the structure: the Garbhagriha. The book unfolds the relationship between the ?square? and the ?circle? in a sequence which, with the help of the stellate square form with its intersecting points, the marmas, resonates throughout the temple?s space and form in conjunction with its subsidiary shrines. It also establishes with the help of SCS, a strong relationship between the prasada and the mandapa. The potent intersection of the two SCS sets the canvass for erotic iconography as evident in temples of Khajuraho. This three volume book establishes the interdependency of the temple?s elevation and its roof form to the plan and its dimensions, setting forth the need for the scholarship to address the temple structure as a whole. With the use of examples from different time and space, the book establishes that the temples underlining design principles remain the same, smallest denominator being the unit dimension of the idol, Shiva lingam or the idol pedestal. Therefore, the later date typologies were of no relevance to the sthapatis of these manifestations. Printed Pages: 572. Seller Inventory # 25921

About this Item: Oxford University Press, 2015. Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Volume I : ‘Listen, for I speak ’ Thus embarks the clown on a journey in search for ‘who am I?’ Narrated in the manner of the Arabian Nights, albeit over thirty nights, the engaging dialogue between the clown and the playwright unfolds the course of Marathi theatre which has a rich, vibrant, and diverse history of over 175 years. Beginning with the staging of the first Marathi play, this volume looks at the period from 1843 to 1947. The period witnessed the commencement of renaissance in Maharashtra; the encounter with the European project of modernity and the intense anti-colonial struggle that followed; the social reform movement in Maharashtra; and the overthrow of the British rule. Translated from Marathi Rangbhoomichya Tees Ratree, this three-volume compendium is a historical analysis of Marathi theatre from a socio-political perspective. It attempts to understand the lives and relationships of mainly the middle-class people in Maharashtra-and, going beyond, even the working classes and the so-called lower castes-during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Volume II : ‘Listen, for I speak ’ Thus embarks the clown on a journey in search for ‘who am I?’ Narrated in the manner of the Arabian Nights, albeit over thirty nights, the engaging dialogue between the clown and the playwright unfolds the course of Marathi theatre which has a rich, vibrant, and diverse history of over 175 years. This volume looks at the plays that came in the three decades after Independence, that is, between 1947 and 1975. The period, also known as the golden period of Marathi theatre, was a complex mixture of hope and struggle, of new social movements and the rise of cynicism. Volume III : ‘Listen, for I speak ’ Thus embarks the clown on a journey in search for ‘who am I?’ Narrated in the manner of the Arabian Nights, albeit over thirty nights, the engaging dialogue between the clown and the playwright unfolds the course of Marathi theatre which has a rich, vibrant, and diverse history of over 175 years. This volume deals with the period after 1975 when the trope of experimental theatre was on the rise. The period saw an increase in maturity and complexity of the plays in contemporary times, as a result of the socio-political factors. About this Item: Mittal Publications, New Delhi, 2005. N.A. Condition: New. Xx+239pp To the student of Ethnography and evolution of culture, Mysore unfolds a region of extraordinary and absorbing interest. Though from very early times the social life in the area remained exposed to a variety of effects and influences, it has succeeded in maintaining an individuality of its own. The present study attempts a comprehensive survey of the customs and manners of the many tribes and castes inhabiting this ethnographically significant area. The survey covers more than 100 groups of castes and tribes and contains over 250 illustrations. The first volume in the series is more than an introduction to the descriptive volumes that follow: its extended scope renders it a volume on the Ethnography of South India with special reference to the then Mysore state. The method of treatment is encyclopaedic which has the decided advantage that the reader gets all available information pertaining to any particular tribe or caste at one place. The Mysore Tribes and Castes has remained a classic ever since its first publication nearly half a century ago. The impressive reprint, brought out in response to wide popular demand, will be of immense value to scholars and students of anthropology, ethnography, history and sociology. Ranging in date from the 12th to 18th century, the sculptures in Portraits of the Masters span the most productive period in the history of Tibetan Buddhist art, providing unparalleled illustration of Tibetan portraiture’s long and varied history. Prefaced with a groundbreaking and comprehensive history of Tibetan portraiture, the collection is presented in five sections devoted to the Arhats, drawn from the Buddha’s original Indian disciples, and to the native Tibetan schools of the Nyingma, Kagyu, Sakya, and the Kadam and Geluk. Each section opens with a history of the tradition, written by leading scholars of Tibetan Buddhism. These histories not only illumine the lives of the great masters, but also eloquently articulate the basic precepts of their teachings. The sculptures are then examined within this context ?the history and images breathing life into each other. Printed Pages: 396 with 300 color illustrations. Size: 10.75" x 12.5". About this Item: Zen Publications/D.K. Printworld (P) Ltd., New Delhi, India. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. Vol. 1: This pictorial survey of the first fifty years of Sri Sathya Sai Baba’s earthly tenure records both the fast moving and exponential spread of his message and mission as well as underlines the unchanging nature of its inspiration, the undying power of Love in the heart. As the expression of love embodied, Sathya Sai in this book, demonstrates the unshakeable nature of the Divine. From the very first portrait taken in an age when photography was unaffordable to the rural population, the same steady glow of an inner poise which characterized the young master as is witnessed today after eight decades.Remarkably, this inscrutable youth from the beginning, could look directly and unselfconsciously straight into the camera because being fully conscious of the self the young Sai was unaffected by anything other than that reality residing within him.Divide into six sections, the first covers the largely unrecorded life of Shirdi Sai Baba in Shirdi. Thereafter the life story of an encore in Puttaparthi unfolds and with the ever increasing archive of photographic material, this first volume had to be limited to 1980, Sathya Sai Baba’s 54th year on earth. The miscellaneous arrangement of this collection allows Sathya Sai Baba to be seen in a whole range of situations, in a variety of different moods. From close familiarity with the poor and unpossessed to awarding audiences to the rich and powerful, Sathya Sai lives out his message that declares the same inexhaustable source of love fuels all our lives irrespective of our condition or station in it.It is this one pointed advocacy of the supremacy of love that each of these photographs reflects. Whether in the Himalaya or the Deccan plateau the message is the same, that the Divine is close at hand and to find it we need to look not outside ourselves but turn imwards. The effect of this book is to build a meditative atmosphere in the viewer and through visual stimulus experience the oneness Sathya Sai’s life exemplifies. We only escape illusion when we are asleep but the Art Baba wishes to teach is that we wake to our unlimited potential. We take birth to celebrate our divine inheritance and Sathya Sai’s presence is a constant reminder of the compassionate state of being which every human being can attain.Vol. 2: Volume two of Sri Sathya Sai’s spiritual journey from 1981 to 2010 witnesses the adventurous outflowing of his mission from backward rural India to some 180 sophisticated countries of the world. Having established and consolidated his base at Prashanthi Nilayam and made his mark by travelling all over India, Sai Baba opened his heart and mission to the whole of humanity. The response was phenomenal. Having activated widespread interest in the traditional fakir figure of Shirdi Sai Baba, he was able then to expand on this compassionate theme in a more modern garb, appealing to an emerging globalized world with its demand for evidence of the oneness of life. His timing was perfect to demonstrate through constancy of being how love is the sole Unifier of Human Aspirations. Baba as exemplar of love’s sovereign hold showed by his presence where the seat of life’s most hallowed mystery lay, not in any particular nation but in our awarness of the sacred nature of selfhood. This central teaching of mankind’s divine potential made any other doctrine superfluous and underlined the truth of his regular assertion: "My life is my message; my message is my Life."This message both simple and profound found its way into the array of institutions Sri Sathya Sai founded, his target audience being youth with its idealism and altruism. His Prashanthi Mandir which traditionally had boasted a priviledged scattering of old devotees on its veranda now was crowded by eager students who flocked there after their classes. This change in emphasis was echoed in the increased avian population. Each twilight from the handful of crows who had nested in the palm trees now came thousands of egrets and mynahs t. About this Item: Aditya, 2000. Hardcover. Condition: As New. From the preface: "Moments of contemplation find expression in iconography. As the vision becomes vaster and cosmic moments of transcendence involve form, the inner universe works itself into art. The other shore, the insight becomes, rtambhara (Yogasutras 1.48). Living experience flows into the rhapsodic form, an access to the yonder mind of inspiration. The iconic forms are a search of the overflowing of the depths wherein images unify and perfect. "This second volume of the Dictionary of Buddhist Iconography shows the vast expanse, the temporal evolution of millennia and the emanation of the ever-evolving realm of the divine, the apparitions of the one into the many. The spontaneity of images unfolds into the store-consciousness (alaya-vijnana) of many countries of Asia. This dictionary is a step to read this tangle of hieroglyphics of Buddhist iconography over the ages and in lands widely apart that have shared the spiritual values of the Tathagata. Theonyms beginning with Amogha open the volume, and it comprises all the entries of the letter B. "An-iconic awareness resolves into iconic representation in the creative play of colours of the silk scrolls of East Asia and thankas of Tibet, Mongolia and Buryatia. This dictionary is an effort to provide a guide to the infinite richness of the multiplicity of figures scintillating in colours of deep meaning." "The Dictionary of Buddhist Iconography is an endeavour of half a century to identify, classify, describe and delineate the bewildering variation in Buddhist icons. It spans the last twenty.
