About this Item: San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1980. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. San Francisco: The Arion Press, 1980. Tall 4to, original aluminum covers stamped in black, contained in an aluminum frame with hinged top with clasp, lettered in black along one edge. 56 accordion-style folded panels, comprising 112 pp. 14 line illustrations and 10 mounted die-cut panels by the printer, Andrew Hoyem, after designs by the author. Format: 14" x 7" inches (closed); 14" x 33' (open), accordion-fold of 56 folded panels. Watercolors added by hand. The type is Univers, composed in Monotype, then reset by hand. The paper is T. H. Saunders hot-press finish, mould-made. Bound in aluminum covers, in a hinged and clasped aluminum container. Numbered and signed by Bradbury. Strictly limited edition of 275 numbered copies. A Fine copy of this spectacular production. Very Scarce. A satire about a two-dimensional world vexed by single- and multi-dimensionality that has been continuously in print since first published in 1884. This tale about the inhabitants of a two-dimensional world and their difficulties with one-dimensional and three-dimensional beings has never gone out of print since it was first printed in 1886. "The great classic of dimensional thought, this has been a highly influential work in science-fiction. It is very well written, amusing, logical, and easy to follow. It is still much the best of the various books that have explored life in worlds of fewer dimensions than ours" (Bleiler, Science-Fiction. The Early Years, 2). This is perhaps technically the most elaborate or complicated of all the Arion Press books to date; it was the seventh production of Hoyem's Arion Press and has long been one of the most difficult, though less costly than the livres d'artiste, to acquire. The text pages and illustration units measure 7 x 14 inches and are joined accordion-style to a length of 33 feet printed on each side, making a 66-foot long book. Seller Inventory # ATTTX.1010

About this Item: De Smecht, ca. 1875]., [Paris:, 1875. Elephant folio (17.5 x 13 in.). 17 leaves of blue paper backed in blue linen, bound in accordion style, w/ 57 pinned-in & sewn-in samples. These are all contained in original binding of contemporary half-calf over pebbled plum-coloured cloth, raised & padded central panel of leather, w/ gilt lettering & decoration, brass corner bosses, mounted on tooled decorative border, w/ gilt ruling, silk moire endpapers (some scuffing & wear to spine, chipping to foot of spine, minor wear to corners, some very minor soiling to samples, remnants of ribbon ties at fore-edges), still a beautiful exemplar. This extraordinary piece of Victoriana, offers a breathtaking sample of needlework in the early years of the Belle Epoque. The portfolio's leaves have been mounted in a continuous accordion style allowing them to be unfolded displaying Ms. De Smecht's wonderful sewn and pinned-in samples extending nearly 20 feet. The piece begins with a lovely miniature cape and hood with gathers & ruffles made from a patterned cotton on purple-coloured background; next is a black and white gingham piece showing expertly done seams in the shapes of letters nearly invisible to a casual inspection due to the tightness of the stitching; followed by samples which also include cross-stitch embroidery -- 1 with a grapes and leaves; a wonderfully knitted red and black miniature skirt and hosiery, complete with a miniature linen shirt; three pieces including collar, apron, and charming little kerchief with ribbon ties. She has also shown off her talents with creating a linen shirt, embroidered & ruffled night shirt & undergarments, a girdle with embroidered monogram, crochet and embroidered felt pieces, tiny gloves and cuffs, as well as crocheted doilies, a lovely miniature purse with open loops, and many examples of lace, some large and elaborate, others delicate and diminutive. This wonderful sampler album was intended to show the young woman's ability of mastering many needlework skills, and whose materials and quality -- especially in the binding -- reflect the bourgeoisie tastes of the 1870s. Typically these sample portfolios were bound into blank notebooks, or drab albums of the period, and were fairly utilitarian -- this sampler was intended to be distinctive. Victorian middle class and upper middle class women were often sent to finishing schools as well as art schools in order to provide them instruction in etiquette, elocution, painting, crafts, needlework, design, and many other applied arts. Many of these required final projects would exhibit the young student's acquired skills, evidenced by this present example. Ms. De Smecht's album was purchased in a Paris shop in the early 1950s, and has been held in the same private collection since. Seller Inventory # 47999

About this Item: Nakanishi], Showa 22 [1947]., [Kyoto:, 1947. Fan-shaped oblong 8vo. 10.5 x 5.5 in. w/ 63 sample fan designs including 35 hand-painted designs, 11 woodblock-printed designs bound in Japanese-style leporello (accordion) binding, with each image opening double-page spanning 17.2 in. Contemporary printed cloth covers, hand-lettered calligraphic title label on front cover (minor edgewear, very slight soiling to back cover), NF copy. First edition, thus, of this sensational post-World War II salesman sample catalogue for fan designs from the Nakanishi family store in Kyoto. Japanese paper folding fans were originally used primarily by the aristocracy and Samurai classes until they became very popular export items during the Edo and Meiji eras. During the Victorian period, Western women of all social classes often carried a Japanese fan in their daily life as a decorative and sometimes practical ornament. Their popularity was reflected in European artworks with many examples appearing in paintings by the Impressionists, and their height of popularity came during the Jazz Age when nearly 4.5 million fans were being exported annually. This sample book offers several designs of the Nihonga style, with visually exquisite examples, incorporating landscapes, fishermen and a girl, fish in a pond, beautifully dressed Japanese geisha overlooking a bay, palm trees, many floral patterns, oranges, Japanese family crests, butterflies, Japanese umbrellas, and so much more. The Nihonga artist most identified in the catalogue is Takeuchi Seiho (1864-1942) who was active from the Meiji through Showa periods, one of the founders of the Nihonga style, and considered a master of the pre-War Kyoto circle of painters, who established his own private school -- the Chikujokai -- and later in 1913 became an Imperial Household Artist. He was very influential in his role of modernizing Nihonga, and although he worked primarily with the famed Kyoto Publisher Unsodo, he created some of the most sumptuous print designs of the 20th century. His legacy of students included such famous artists as Hashimoto Shinnosuke; Hashimoto Kansetsu, Nishiyama Suisho, Tsuchida Bakusen, Nishimura Goun, Uemura Shoen, Tokuoka Shinsen, Tsuji Kako, Miki Suizan, and Ito Takashi. The Nakanishi family were originally fan makers and continued to do so well into the 20th century when they changed over to dealing in antique Japanese dolls, which the owner had collected for years. About this Item: Northwestern Printing Co.,, Seattle, WA:, 1891. 32mo. 46, [2] pp., plus large folding 5 pp. supplement printed accordion-style, and tipped-in to verso of back cover. Original printed blue ribbed softcovers (very minor chipping to corners, rear hinge w/ very small closed tear head & foot of joint, minor dustsoiling), still VG- copy. First edition of this exceedingly scarce original charter of the Seattle Police Department, which was written and published under Mayor Harry White after the approval of Seattle's new "Home Rule" charter required by the newly created Washington State legislature in 1890. The City of Seattle was still recovering from the massive fire, and Mayor White -- elected in July 1890 under the Washington Territory rules -- faced considerable challenges as a result of the changes in city government which now extended the mayor's term of office, and changed the Chief of Police from a one-year term elected directed by voters, to Chief of Police and officers appointed by the Mayor and five-member Board of Police Commissioners. These changes and charter were voted on by the mayor and commissioners in December, 1890. This 1891 Charter established the rules and regulations, duties of the Chief of Police, Inspectors, Captains, Lieutenants, Detectives, and patrolmen, as well as specific rules for uniforms, and of particular interest, a form for the City of Surgeon's Certificate to ensure the health of the police officers and officials. Police Chief Bolton Rogers was the first to be appointed under the new Charter, and he would remain Chief until the end of 1892, and then again in 1895-96. White was forced to resign his office in November, 1891 due to the flourishing of gambling, prostitution, and alcohol use with the help and aid of Seattle Police -- although he claims in his resignation speech he was leaving due to poor health. As a result of the allegations of corruption, the Board of Police Commissioners was later abolished by the new Freeholders City Charter of 1896, and the Chief of Police came under the purview of the Mayor, and City Council. No copies located in Worldcat; See: Anne Frantilla, Seattle City Halls, Seattle Municipal Archives (2003); Cassandra Tate, Voters Elect Harry White as Mayor of the City of Seattle on July 14, 1890 (2004); Bagley, History of Seattle, Vol. 2, p. 549; Vol. 3, p. 1141; Seattle Municipal Archives, Seattle Police Department Annual Reports, 1894-2017 (1891 Report recently discovered in Seattle Public Library stacks). About this Item: Harcourt Brace, New York, 1935. First Printing of the First Edition. A Near Fine copy in a Very Good plus unclipped dust jacket that is lightly tanned at the extremities and there is some shallow chipping to the head of the spine. This copy is signed by Kent on the front flyleaf. There is a shadow of offsetting to the front endpaper. Salamina details artist and adventurer Rockwell Kentís second trip to Greenland. Salamina unfolds as a series of vivid vignettes, each illustrated with Kentís bold black and white drawings. Through his accounts of fishing trips and Christmas festivities, shared meals and budding friendships, Kent acquaints us with the Eskimo and Danish inhabitants of the small vibrant community of Igdlorssuit. Both the native people and the forbidding Arctic landscape held a special beauty for Kent, and he describes them with an artistís eye. Salamina is Kentís Eskimo housekeeper (kifak), who becomes a central figure in the book when she and her daughter come to share Kentís small hut for the year. Kentís wry self-reflection and his poetic meditations on nature, humanity and love make this an enduring classic of travel literature and artistic quest. Seller Inventory # 21849
