Original red pebble-grained cloth, rebacked, highly decorated and lettered in gilt; 10 concertina-style co-joint mounted albumen prints of original photographs forming a continuous panorama (25 x 340 cm); cloth a little rubbed, the images very well preserved. 'Pascal Sà bah (1823â€"1886) was a photographer in Constantinople (Istanbul). He was born there to a Syrian Catholic father and an Armenian mother. In 1857, he opened his first photography studio, “El Chark Socià tà Photographic,” in Constantinople at 439 Grande Rue de Pera. In 1860, the French photographer, Antoine Laroche, directed the studio. In 1873, Sà bah opened another studio in Cairo. Pascal Sà bah suffered a stroke in 1883 and his brother, Cosmi, took charge of the business until Jean (1872â€"1947), Pascal’s son who also became a photographer, was old enough to inherit the business. To profit from his father’s fame, he signed his photographs J. Pascal Sà bah. In 1888, Jean went into partnership with a French photographer resident in Istanbul, Polycarpe Joaillier (1848â€"1904). The firm of Sà bah & Joaillier was named the Sultan’s official photographer, and at his request took photographs across the Ottoman Empire. After Joaillier’s return to Paris, Jean Sà bah sold the business in 1908' (Dumbarton Oaks Research Library and Collection, online). About this Item: 2016. Pomona Queensland. 2016. "I have created this one-of-a-kind artist book, in a partial concertina format to celebrate Shakespeare's anniversary. It is a trilogy of three Sonnets, using the stylised illustrations to depict human relationships. The images are painted in gouache with an overlay of liquid glass to create a translucent visual impact. This effect is most apparent with Sonnet 73 as my intent was to ensure the illustration focussed inwards to the text on each Sonnet. I have endeavoured with the juxtaposition of each image to the lettering to speak to the eyes in a powerful statement. Sonnet 29 â€" the lettering is a free interpretation of the well known Cancellaresca hand, used in Elizabethan times, written in Sumi. A simple leaf decoration of images painted in gouche combined with hand embossing completes the design element. Sonnet 18 â€" again written in Sumi, this letterform is a formal representation of Cancellaresca, emphasising the vowels in various colours to suggest Shakespeare's colourful literature. I chose a simple hand embossed texture to complement the calligraphic form. Sonnet 73 â€" I have written this letterform in complementary rich colours in gouache to blend with the illustration. The flowing embossed leaf design adds a subtle charm to each page. I chose an iconic gold background for the front cover, tooling a diaper design which was used in Medaevil manuscripts and Icon paintings of the 14-15th century into the surface. The illustration in gouache sets the scene of the elegance of each Sonnet. The back of this book has a simple gold diaper design to marry with the impact of the front cover. Desbrière, Édouard [Translated and Edited by Constance Eastwick] Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronté, KB (29 September 1758 - 21 October 1805) was a British flag officer in the Royal Navy. He was noted for his inspirational leadership, superb grasp of strategy, and unconventional tactics, which together resulted in a number of decisive naval victories, particularly during the Napoleonic Wars. He was shot and killed during his final victory at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

About this Item: Printed by the artist, [Edinburgh, 2016. ONE OF 7 COPIES, 16.3 x 13.7 cm and approximately 240cm across fully open. Two intersecting accordion-folded panoramic sheets, one an aquatinted etching on 300gsm Hahnemuhle paper with laser cutouts, the other black 300gsm paper with laser cutouts. Bound between cloth-covered boards with endpapers of embossed Fabriano Rosapina Avorio paper (285gsm), with a paper wrap-around band printed in black. Housed in a custom cloth drop-back box blocked in silver together with a full-colour 12pp. booklet about the book and containing a certificate of authenticity signed and numbered by the artist. A wordless retelling of 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' using a combination of old and new technologies: intaglio printmaking and laser cutting. The result is a panoramic piece of book art that visually narrates the story and draws inspiration from the imagery of the text. Inspired by artists and illustrators such as William Hogarth, Lotte Reiniger and Jan Pienkowski, the etchings also recall the golden age of British book illustration, particularly the work of Kay Nielsen, Edmund Dulac, and Helen Stratton, and their interplay with the intersecting laser-cut black silhouettes adds an additional layer. About this Item: [1838]., 1838. Aquatint in original hand colour, London : Messrs. Fores, A fabulous very long hand-colored leporello, or concertina, capturing the pomp and pageantry of the procession marking the coronation of Queen Victoria. In the age before photos, this souvenir impressively reproduced the entirety of the affair, or something very close to it, and it unquestionably served as a template for later such occasions. The leporello is 1720 by 11 cm, or over 700 inches long. It unfolds by opening from the center, with half to the left, half to the right. The leporello fits into a custom-made cloth slipcase, around which a half calf binder (with marbled boards) enfolds in a rather novel, attractive style of binding system. The outer panels on both sides are heavily soiled and foxed, as is the centerpiece, which lies on the inside of the spine. By the hinges there are abrasion losses, and the centerpiece has cracks running down vertically with trivial losses, and some minor blistering besides. Most of the panels have light soiling but are nonetheless quite bright and always attractive. The original outer casing and title is gone. Missing also is the title tab rendered in French on the left end of the leporello; the tab on the right side rendered in English is present. Happily, the entire leporello is backed with canvas to give it extra strength. Seller Inventory # 225646

A personal photograph album, containing 122 mostly snapshot images, each captioned by hand beneath the image, mounted on fourteen leaves bound concertina-style with black crushed velvet boards, a.e.g.; a few images faded, overall in good condition. Others record the rivers and cities they visited: the Canton River and Shanghai; the General Hospital in Shanghai (where Morren spent time in recovery); the Yangste River (including a snap of “The Rice Rats in Swatow. These kids pick up every single grain of rice that drops from the bags”); Tientisin River (with views of the Tientsin Bund). Four images record passengers and a circus on the deck of the s/s King Sing, another company ship; another taken from the deck shows “Chinese beggars in their tubs”. One photograph shows “H.M. Flagship Hawkins. China Squadron. One of our newest & very latest types of Cruiser”, suggesting that the album was compiled in or shortly after October, 1919, when the Hawkins reached Hong Kong to join the China Squadron. About this Item: London - George Routledge and Sons Ltd, 1945. Hardcover. Condition: GOOD ONLY. First edition. A uncommon first edition of The Open Society and Its Enemies, in two volumes. A work that is extremely hard to find in an acceptable condition. Here it is better than most though with underlining and marks through the text. A hugely influential work criticising teleological historicism (a theory that states that history unfolds in accordance with universal laws), Popperwas highly critical of the totalitarianism of his day, and also particularly of Marx and Hegel, which warranted a ban of the book in The Soviet Union until 1992. The volumes are entitled The Spell of Plato and The High-Tide of Prophecy: Hegel and Marx. The importance andhigh regard held forthis work is such that it is oftenseen as some of the best nonfiction of the Twentieth Century. Condition: In cloth binding with gilt detailing. Externally sound, there are markings to the boards, as well as wear to the extremities, joints and backstrip. Internally, the pages are firmly bound but feature ink inscriptions and markings from correction fluidfrom a previous owner throughout, particularly to endpages, as well as a newspaper cutting adhered to pastedown. The text remains clear. Overall: GOOD ONLY. Seller Inventory # 046231

About this Item: ff [Flynn & Funazaki], 2013. No. 2 of a limited edition of 5. 94 x 100 x 22mm. Bound in full calf leather with vellum blocked in black. Rounded spine made from a dowel and the vellum extends to form the pockets, where both ends of the concertina pages are inserted and attached to the cover. The doublures have been laser-printed from a drawing by the binder. The text by Danny Flynn and illustrations by Eri Funazaki were handset and printed in letterpress from zinc plates using an Adana Eight-Five onto Zerkall paper, which have been additionally hand-tooled in gold and blind. Housed in a full light green calf clamshell box lined with printed paper. The text is an excerpt from a play involving two dogs having a heated conversation about their daily life (ie waiting to be told where to sit) written by Danny Flynn. "It has been both a new and experimental project that edits and shortens the longer play to fit the nature of typesetting for an artists' book without losing the speed and the flow of the play". About this Item: Deutsche Bibelgesellschaft, 2018. Hardback. Condition: New. Willy Wiedmann (illustrator). Lim. u. numer. Aufl.. Language: N/A. Brand New Book. Seller Inventory # AAB9783438033314
