About this Item: Tokyo, Japan: Toho-Shuppan Publishing, 1954. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 364 pages. Published in 1954. Artist Book. Two-volume book on subject. One of the greatest collectible book discoveries of our time. The First Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run in this unique format only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Toho-Shuppan: Boxed Set consisting of two volumes, both of which are encased in the publisher's original cardboard box. Volume One, "Ginza Kaiwai", is a book-length account on the world-famous Tokyo district. The text by Kimura Shohachi is interspersed with "ukiyo-e" woodblock print reproductions by Hiroshige, black-and-white photographs by Yoshikatsu Kanno, maps, and reproductions of original drawings. Publisher's original promotional leaflet laid-in. Publisher's original rice-paper-wrapped slipcase with pictorial labels pasted in front and on the spine. In publisher's original rice-paper DJ, as issued. Volume Two, "Ginza Haccho", consists of Yoshikazu Suzuki's photographic re-construction of Ginza in an accordion foldout format. A marvel of publishing ingenuity: Two continuous plates present Every Building On Ginza Street, one across the top, the other across the bottom, with text in the center. The accordion is encased in pale green hard boards with red titles in front. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "Ginza Kaiwai/Ginza Haccho". Masterpiece. Ostensibly, the precursor of Ed Ruscha's "Every Building On The Sunset Strip" (1966). "Ginza Kaiwai/Ginza Haccho" is first of all, two books, both of them realized to the superior standards that one has come to expect of Japanese publishing. Second, the concept and realization of "Ginza Haccho" is the same as Ed Ruscha's most celebrated Artist Book, except that the former precedes the latter by thirteen years. Calling "Ginza Haccho" the "Japanese Every Building On The Sunset Strip", as some commentators have done, is racist, and the appellation suggests that "Ginza Haccho" followed rather than preceded Ruscha. Whether Ruscha was aware of "Ginza Haccho" or not is irrelevant. Yoshikazu Suzuki did it first, brilliantly so, and just as important, its precedence does not in any way diminish Ed Ruscha's achievement either. An absolute "must-have" title for Yoshikazu Suzuki, photography, and Artist Book collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of very few copies of the First Edition/First Printing still available online, is enclosed in a hand-made protective black cloth slipcase for posterity, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. It is, quite simply, the single most beautiful copy we have ever seen. Please note: The few copies that have turned up online all have serious flaws (heavy foxing, staining, soiling, and wear as well as intrusive repairs). As collectors realize the importance of "Ginza Kaiwai/Ginza Haccho" in the history of modern book-making, its value will increase accordingly. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest Artist Books of our time. A fine collectible copy. no. Seller Inventory # 15563

About this Item: Claude Barbin, 1670-1 [Approbation dated 1669]., Paris, 1670. First edition, rare. A Hispano-Moorish romance, which unfolds during the long medieval struggle between Christians and Muslims for control of the Iberian Peninsula, Zayde often considered the last great French romance before the emergence of the modern novel (a development also attributed to Madame de Lafayette , with her La Princesse de Clèves). The first volume contains the first appearance of Daniel Huet's treatise on the origin of novels. Like the better-known La Princess de Clèves, the novel was issued carrying the name of Madame Lafayette's friend and confidant Jean Regbault de Segrais, secretary the duchesse de Montpensier. It is also likely that de la Rochefoucauld had hand in the novel's composition. Lafayette was the only woman author of Ancien regime France who had a work accepted into the canon of world literature-The Princess of Clèves, variously referred to, depending on context, as the first psychological novel, the first historical novel, even the first realist novel. 2 vols, 8vo (150 × 90 mm), pp. 441, [1]; [4], 536. Titles with woodcut devices. Later maroon crushed morocco, gilt, gilt edges, by Masson-De Bonnelle. Bookplates (Grandsire). An excellent copy. [Tchemerzine, III, 834-835 - Brunet, III, 743.]. About this Item: [Germany. ca. ]., 1840. [32] watercolors with individual text, each on paper panels measuring 5 1/4 x 4 inches, totaling about 132 inches all told. Modern brown linen case with decorative ribbon ties. Panel of watercolors attached to front board only at beginning of sequence. Each panel mounted on linen, with creases at each fold in an accordion-style binding. Each panel consists of a single watercolor of a cake or tort, with handwritten text below the image. Images fresh and lively, colors still strong. Inoffensive soiling (perhaps from closely observant baking practitioners?). In very good condition, housed in a linen clam- shell box with paper label on front board. A marvellous and enticing collection of thirty-two watercolors of cakes and tortes, presented together in a folding framework which, when extended, measures over eleven feet long. The individual desserts are presented in a naive, yet solid, style with each image accompanied by identifying and explanatory text. Certain words specific to Germany in the 1840s strongly suggest that these illustrations were utilized as something akin to a baker's catalogue, to be shown to customers who could then order specific items for particular occasions. Alternatively, the images may have been used a illustrations in a shop or window display to advertise the baker's skills. In addition to the expected chocolate cakes and apple and linzer tortes, are more curiously-named creations including a Brassilianer. A wonderful watercolor series advertising the baker's craft in mid-19th-century Germany. Seller Inventory # WRCAM 37362

About this Item: Vincent Fitzgerald & Co, New York, 1987. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Limited Edition. This is a signed limited edition of "The Epiphanies" published Vincent Fitzgerald & Co, New York in 1987 with a limitation of 50 copies with this being number 31. James Joyce wrote the 40 epiphanies contained in this work between the ages of 18 and 21 with the topics ranging from his childhood experiences to the death of his brother. Francesca Valente, the art historian, wrote an article on the use of epiphanies by James Joyce, "Throughout his works, from Dubliners to Finnegans Wake, Joyce carried out his creative task by means of a series of epiphanies, a sequence of related moments of insight and understanding. The central meaning of Joyce's works is provided not so much by plot but by the revelation they suggest of a certain universe in a certain order." In preparing to illustrate "The Epiphanies", Susan Weil and Marjorie Van Dyke first produced forty interpretative paintings based on James Joyce's dream-inspired writings. The two artists and Vincent FitzGerald realized that the epiphanies fell into four categories: Death, Dreams, Games (primarily word games or puns), and Planes, and they designed the shape and size of the book based on Joyce's original manuscript pages. Susan Weil produced the artwork for "Death" and "Planes" and Marjorie Van Dyke did the artwork for "Dreams" and "Games". Measuring approximately 15 by 13 inches with the individual pages measuring 12 by 14 inches, "The Epiphanies" is a spectacular production that includes 64 etchings, original watercolors, collages, and handcuttings. The book's pages, melded into accordion folds, are designed so that phrases are first read out of context and are then brought into focus. The watercolor maquette for Susan Weil's "Death" section is a blending of nine separate images transformed into a sequential statement that "evoked the sorrows and terrors of these five epiphanies about the death" of Joyce's brother. The contents are housed in a grey silk clamshell box. The condition of the contents is FINE with the clamshell box in FINE- condition with some sunburning. The book is signed by Susan Weil and Marjorie Van Dyke on the limitation page. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 000130

About this Item: Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Eleven gate-folded pages bound concertina-style, illustrated with coloured linocuts by Mike Hudson; demy folio; within floral patterned purple cloth box with printed paper title label inlaid on the lid, purple ribbon tie and yellow cloth sides; The Wayzgoose Press, Katoomba, NSW, 2006. Edition limited to 30 numbered copies (25 are for sale), signed by the author and publishers Mike Hudson and Jadwiga Jarvis; this being copy number 17 of 21 thus bound. * With the original prospectus, slightly marked, loosely inserted. Conceived, designed and illustrated with multi-coloured linocuts by Mike Hudson and hand set in a variety of types by Jadwiga Jarvis. The linocuts were extra coloured by hand, making each copy in the edition unique. The pages unfold to a total length of 5 metres. Loosely inserted is a printed instruction sheet:\i Some helpful hints on how best to read/view \i Dorothy Lamour's life as a phrase book . The book is a typographic rendition of Janaczewska's play of the same title, in which the screen actress 'finds herself in a poem instead of a movie' [Introduction]. Jadwiga Jarvis (\i The Wayzgoose Affair , p. 175) explained the format: 'In order to maintain the spirit of a performance, we gave the book a theatrical setting: the hotel room which appears on every one of the 11 gate-fold pages, was Dorothy's stage. Onto this stage various scenarios obliquely suggested by the text were introduced . a chessboard, a maze, a giant pineapple, a clapperboard and an overweight Ronald McDonald. The introduction and colophon pages featured the same room/stage, but on these the set was empty and shown as if unlit, alluding to the characteristic hiatus of a theatrical presentation before curtain-up and after the final curtain'. About this Item: Edward Ruscha, Los Angeles, 1966. First edition, first issue with the extra flap. Inscribed by Ed Ruscha. Accordion folded; slipcase; One continuous accordion-fold page composed of glued paper segments with black-and-white photographs of every building on the sunset strip. Near fine in the original slipcase. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. In the 1960s, Ed Ruscha more or less reinvented the artist’s book. By turning away from the craftsmanship and luxury status that typified the livre d’artiste in favor of the artistic idea or concept, expressed simply through photographs and text, Ruscha opened the genre to the possibilities of mass-production and distribution. The 27-foot length of the accordion-folded Every Building on the Sunset Strip affords the viewer two continuous photographic views of the mile and a half section of this landmark stretch of Sunset, one for each side of one of the city’s landmark thoroughfare" (The Getty Research Institute). About this Item: Chowder Bay Press, Sydney, Australia, 2012. Artist's book, one of 26 lettered copies, A-Z, plus 2 Artist Proof copies, all on Japanese Iwaki Mulberry paper for the linocuts and Rising Stonehenge paper for the poems, with wrapper supports of Suecia Antiqua Chamois, each book signed and lettered in pencil, by the artist, Peter Kingston, and the author, Robert Adamson. There are twenty-one prints by Kingston, including three long internal wrappers, a folding leporello, the upper lid of the box, and the illustrated colophon in the base of the lining. Page size: 13-3/4 x 13-3/4 inches; 14 folios consisting of poem title on recto, poem on verso, linocut (chine colle) on recto (one of which is double page fold), verso blank; plus titlepage and colophon, plus wrappers consisting of double-page linocut on Iwaki Mulberry paper to hold colophon and color photograph of Mr. Kingston and Mr. Adamson. Bound: loose as issued in linocut-printed green wrappers of Iwaki Mulberry paper showing wide-eyed, iridescent silver - pink - and blue seahorses in a black net on green ground on front of wrapper with groper swimming into the net on the back cover; the wrappers are one continuous double-size linocut - and quite an extraordinary one it is. Housed in custom-made wood box (radiata pine) with Peter Kingston's view of Sydney Harbor on a cream painted ground (by Peter Kingston) then printed silk screen with his view of Sydney Harbor in red, blue, black, and yellow and finished by hand. One the inside front cover of the box is Peter Kingston's musical score for piano, "Francis Webb's Song" printed on Rising Stonehenge paper. Francis Webb, well-regarded Australian poet and Adamson's poetic hero, was the subject of his inaugural lecture as founding Professor, CAL Chair of Poetry, University of Technology, Sydney. A light sensitive circuit plays this song without words when the box is opened. Another linocut, the logo of Chowder Bay Press, is revealed on the inside pastedown of the box, again printed in color with the wood spoon technique by Peter Kingston, again signed and numbered by him. Each of the 21 linocuts is hand finished by Peter Kingston, especially the cover wrapper of sea horses which are accomplished by hand (eyes, scales, etc.) The sea horses enchant and invite the viewer / reader to get caught in the "net" of this wonderful memory of a shared environment. Meticulously printed, designed and assembled by Nicholas Pounder, set in Bembo type, using archivally stable Japanese pigment ink, the book reflects a true collaboration between author and artist and printer. The poet Robert Adamson and the artist Peter Kingston, both born in 1943, grew up on opposite sides of Sydney Harbour: the poet on the north shore at Neutral Bay with Taronga Park and Balls Head nearby, and the artist on the south side at Vaucluse, near the now lost Wintergarden Cinema and Sydney Stadium. They shared a deep attachment to the foreshore and water, although their paths diverged: Kingston was sent to a prestigious private school, and Adamson graduated from delinquency to Long Bay Gaol; and Kingston eventually moved across the Harbour to Lavender Bay, while Adamson left for the Hawkesbury River. However in this autobiographical collaboration they recall some of the landmarks, formative events, and magical experiences of their childhood, like the seahorses that Robert Adamson used to see taunting a groper on the other side of the shark net at Balmoral, where he swam every day.Peter Kingston is a well-known Australian artist whose work is held by the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra; the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney; the State Library of New South Wales, Sydney; the Museum of Sydney, several regional galleries and internationally by the Biblioteque de la ville, Belgium; and the National Film Library in Tokyo. A monograph of the artist's work titled 'Harbourlights: the art of Peter Kingston' was published in 2004. Robert Adamson, one of Australia's leading poets, has been a key player in the growth o. Thai Buddhist manuscript. Harmonica-style bound thick manuscript: PHRA MALAI MANUSCRIPT

About this Item: 14.5x67.5 cm (leporello - or concertina style), 94 leaves, written and illustrated on recto / verso, each leaf appr. 14.5x 67.5 cm (of a total length of ca. 1363 cm), illustrated with 24 most beautiful double-page miniatures (12 double-pages on each side), contemporary painted black boards. This Buddhist manuscript contains most likely the account of the monk Phra Malai, often found in illustrated Thai manuscripts of that time. According to this story Phra Malai acquires extraordinary powers through his merits and meditation, which allow him to travel between heaven and hell. Back on earth, the monk preaches about the things he has seen and what to expect from these places in our own future. Consequently it was widely used as a preaching text at funerals. The miniatures present a.o. angels hovering through the air, the gods Brahma and Indra, a poor man picking waterlilies and offering them to Phra Malai to take with him to the heavens as a gift, people suffering on the thorn tree (the punishment for adulterers in hell), a buddhist ascetic in front of a cave and a man fighting demons. Please notify before visiting to see a book. Prices are excl. VAT/TVA (only Switzerland) & postage. For the popularity and iconography of Phra Malai manuscripts see: H. Ginsburg, Thai manuscript painting (1989), mainly chapter 5. About this Item: Edward Ruscha, Los Angeles, 1966. First edition, first issue with the extra flap. Inscribed by Ed Ruscha on the title page. Accordion folded; slipcase; One continuous accordion-fold page composed of glued paper segments with black-and-white photographs of every building on the sunset strip. Some browning to the spine in the original slipcase, which is in near fine condition. About this Item: Rarach Press, Kalamazoo, Mich, 1989. Fine art binding. Condition: Near fine. Ladislav R. Hanka (illustrator). Signed Limited Edition. One of 38 copies. Poems and essays by James Armstrong and Ben Mitchell, 16 etchings by Ladislav R. Hanka, typography by Amy Bollinger. This copy beautifully bound by Peter Geraty. One of two copies bound by Geraty for an exhibition celebrating Ladislav Hanka's imprint Rarach Press: 50 x 25: An Exhibit of 50 Rarach Press Books Bound by 25 American Design Binders (Elizabeth Perkins Prothro Galleries, Bridwell Library, Southern Methodist University, Dallas, TX. Oct. 11 1993 - Jan. 22, 1994). The exhibition also traveled to Houston Baptist College and University of California at Los Angeles. From the Bridwell Library Exhibition catalog:"50 x 25" is not only an exhibition but also a "world premiere," of the most recent work of contemporary bookbinders in America. Arising from an invitation to twenty-five artists to create two distinct bindings of a Rarach Press imprint, the exhibition presents unique and important design bindings which make use of a wide variety of media and techniques. From the Colophon:"County Survey has been a collaborative effort among a number of longterm residents of Kalamazoo County. . Typography and letterpress work by Amy Bollinger; completed at The Private Press and Typefoundry of Paul Hayden Duensing, Vicksburg, Michigan. . The artist and publisher is Ladislav R. Hanka. . The paper is Daniel Smith Archival Print paper. The edition is 38 ." Binder's statement:I chose to focus upon the need humans seem to have for controlling the land. The book caused me to give much thought to that struggle. The land, subtle but all pervasive and yielding only with reluctance, is the molded form of the leather. The tooled grid arbitrarily bisecting the land is man's work. The airbrushed paper gives some idea as to the personality if the land and its variations. The binding is made from two skins as the book is so large. The texture of the book is made from a pressing die of aluminum foil that was wrinkled to resemble a river on a piece of binders' board. It was backfilled with gesso to harden it up and the rest of the board was textured with just plain gesso. After the leather was put on, it was allowed to set up for about 30 minutes, and then the binders' board die was placed on top and the whole thing sent through an etching press.Double board structure similar to a split board binding; concertina sewing. Full green textured Hewit Chieftain goatskin; textured and airbrushed Japanese paper inlays; gold tooling; multi-colored hand-sewn silk endbands. Gray Burga endpapers. Housed in a custom linen-covered dropback box by the binder. Bound by Peter Geraty in 1993. 51.5cm x 33cm. Seller Inventory # 225

About this Item: Naples: Gatti et Dura, 1834, 1834. Scarce Dance of the TarantulaStep By Hand-Colored Panorama Step[PANORAMA]. DURA, Gaetano. Souvenir de la Tarantella Napolitaine dirigée par Louis Puccinelli Maitre de Danse dessinée par Gaetan Dura. Naples: Gatti et Dura, n.d. [c. 1834]. First edition. Oblong octavo (5 7/16 x 7 1/8 in; 138 x181 mm). Hand-colored frontispiece, engraved title, one plate of music notation, and seventeen hand-colored lithographed plates with captions, in accordion format unfolding to 142 1/2 inches. Contemporary half calf over patterned paper boards. Gilt-rolled spine. Armorial bookplate of Mountgarret. An excellent copy of a scarce work.ABPC records only one complete copy at auction since 1923; an incomplete copy with only ten plates was sold in 1955. OCLC/KVK note only three institutional copies, at Harvard, NYPL, and Austria State Library."Also due to the trend of the illustration of the Neapolitan folklore, but more didactic, it is the lithographic album titled Tarantella. Neapolitan Dance, drawn entirely by Dura [1805-1878], published in Naples in 1833, and lithographed by Gatti in 1834. Dura's [Souvenir de la Tarantella Napolitaine], a very important document for the reconstruction of the Neapolitan tarantella, presents nineteen plates, accompanied by captions that explain, step by step, all the different phases of the dance. The style of the illustrations is basic: two dancers, drawn not without a certain grace and accuracy, move isolated on a white background completely devoid of any decoration or pittoresco. In the mid-1830s Dura became ass'ciated with Gatti, founding a lithographic establishment that soon became one of the most important in Naples. The brand of 'Gatti and Dura' published prints, calendars, atlases, graphic novels and works of popular nature, such as almanacs and miscellanies" (Encyclopedia Treccani.it, L'Enciclopedia Italiana). About this Item: [Kyoto 1914-15, Unsodo].Gold silk covers,400 color woodblock shell plates, English introduction, Latin and Japanese text, complete four vol. set, 17.8 x 24.7 cm., very clean copy in blue cloth Chitsu folding case & clasps. FIRST EDITION .*** *** *** . . . BY HIRASE YOICHIRO . . . JAPAN'S EMINENT CONCHOLOGIST . . . CATALOGUE OF 400 COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINTED . . . JAPANESE MOLLUSKS . . *** HIRASE YOICHIRO [1859-1925]: Was Japan's most eminent, respected, celebrated, prolific conchologist, malacologist and collector of Japanese mollusks [shells]. . In 1936 he established his private Conchology Museum in Kyoto. He was also the founder of the short-lived journal: "CONCHOLOGICAL MAGAZINE" in 1907. . He was a diligent collector of Japanese shells and created the largest collection in Japan. The results were published in this set of 4 volumes. . This lavishly color-illustrated catalogue of his collection is considered the best Japanese collection of shell varieties. . His son, Shintaro Hirase [1884-1939] was also a conchologist. The majority of his collection of mollusks were destroyed during World War II. . *** HIS COLLECTION CATALOG COMPLETE IN 4 VOLUMES: . The complete set was in published in four silk-bound volumes, accordion folded pages, illustrating 400 different shells, including land and fresh-water examples. . The explanation of plates [the index] lists entries in Katakana, Kanji [Japanese characters] and Latin. The preface was in English & Japanese. . Per the introduction, the author stated: "This is why I have used the wood-cut art, which has been existing a long time in Kyoto, and has advanced to an excellent state of development." He continues in the English preface to the second volume: ".a peculiar art of our country." . His meaning and preference was to use 'native Japanese color-woodblock printing, rather than using foreign [modern] colour machine lithography or the three-color machine printing process. . *** THE COLOR WOODBLOCK PRINT ILLUSTRATIONS: Each volume has 20 double-page color woodcut illustrations of shells. . *** ISSUED SERIALLY: The work was issued serially, originally planned to be a ten volume set, covering 1000 different kinds of shells, but that did not pan out due to Hirase's a lack of funds. . Hirase settled on 4 volumes, each with 20 color woodcut plates, illustrating 100 shells per volume. . First Issued: vol.1:1914 vol.2:1915 vol.3:1915 vol.4:1914, reprinted in 1922, the last in the complete seri s. See below for more details on dates and reprints. . *** CAUTION: The most desirable, best collectable sets are those which were kept as each volume was issued. They will be matching in all aspects: condition, color of cloth covers, high quality woodblock printing, wear patterns and consecutive or same date ranges. . . There are some sets which have been made up from various odd volumes, They are most always greatly mismatched, the color of the gold covers vary greatly, and the wear patterns will also be very different from other volumes in the set. They may also have widely different date, or mixed dates. They are always of a lesser value. . *** TOTAL NUMBER OF COPIES PRINTED: Woodblock-printed books had a limitation to the number of clean excellent copies that could be printed from the cherry-wood block. . The water-based pigments saturated the wood, and the drying process inevitably caused warping or caused 'checking,' thus reducing the ability to print solid complete images, with excellent registry. . Because of this limitation, prints were rushed off the woodblocks in groups of about 100-200 per printing run. As the blocks dried out overnight, they became less and less useful, producing poor quality images. Some woodblocks had to be re-carved to maintain high-quality print results. . It is unknown if or how many blocks of this book were re-carved, but per the below its obvious the blocks could not last 23 years without some reworking. . There is also the specter of the 1923 Kanto earthquake and the. Seller Inventory # 84338005

About this Item: Kyoto 1917, Unsodo. Green boards, accordion folding albums, front title slips, in worn original brown silk Chitsu case no clips, books: brillantly clean, bright copies, no defects 5 vol. set, complete, ca. 17.3 x 26 cm. FIRST & ONLY EDITION This is a spectacular and stunning polychrome woodblock printed book. It contains a total of 125 superbly beautiful color woodblock prints, 25 in each volume. These are double- page prints 37 x 26 cm. a bit larger than the standard Oban print size. Each illustration has the Japanese name written in Katakana, printed on heavy stiff Washi paper. The books are bound in the original green paper-covered boards, each with a centered title slip. index, and sealed with three different cinnabar chops/seals on the title page by the artist. * POLYCHROME WOODBLOCK PRINTED FLOWERS: The work is magnificent, with "true to nature," colors, a "riot of color." Done in sympathetic and natural tones and colors which reflect the true color of the stems, leaves, buds, flowers in very tender compositions. * CONTENTS: Volume 1: Spring, part 1. Volume 2: Spring, part 2. Volume 3: Summer, part 1. Volume 4: Summer, part 2. Volume 5: Autumn, part 1. Complete in five volumes. **** RARITY: The book is seldom found on the market for sale. The last recorded copy we have was sold in Japan, 1991. Copies of this book have been broken up, individual pages sold as "floral prints" on the world art market. Finding a complete set in such wonderful condition is indeed R A R E ! . This book was printed in a small and usual edition of 200 only copies. . This obscure and rare item has eluded the scrutiny of all of the usual bibliographers. See below for a list of reference books in which this is NOT FOUND. ***** CONDITION: THE PRINTS: The books are exceptionally fresh, bright and clean, no worming, no stains, no tears, no weak hinges, no damage to center folds, no damage whatsoever! There are even a few original tissue sheets remaining in these volumes. There is some of the usual oxidation found on the covers, as the green coloring was made from copper-oxide, and a very small amount of scuffing, very tiny bit of corner wear, a few miniscule nicks, otherwise a lovely set. After nearly 100 years, this oxidation is now with a lovely patina and usual for books of this age. The contents: prints remain lovely, the iron-based colors like red or browns also have the same oxidation to them, with a stunning effect as they take on a warm and rich patina. The prints are fine early impressions, with excellent key-block registry and exceptionally fine coloring throughout. This is a very brilliant copy of a rare, complete set of floral botanicals. Its the first one we have had in this condition in over 45 years. . CONDITION: CHITSU: The brown silk Chitsu case has done its job, it has taken the brunt of the external wear. The exterior joints are split but now solid, lacks the 2 bone clips, corners, edges worn with minor loss to some cloth, internal joints have been brown paper-taped at some earlier time. The Chitsu has the original title slip in very nice condition, and the "look & feel" of the Taisho [1917] period in which this set was published. ***** BIBLIOGRAPHY: NOT IN: Kerlen Edgren Bartlett & Shohara Mitchell Toda Laurance Or any other usual bibliographies. ***. About this Item: Edizioni del Naviglio, Milan, Italy, 1969. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Limited Edition. Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) and her husband, Robert Delaunay, were co-founders of the art movement know as Orphism which was known for its strong colors and bold geometric shapes. During her long career, Delaunay created solitary art pieces, worked in fashion and costume design, including the costumes for Sergei Diaghilev's 1917 productions of "Cleopatra" and "Aida." This book represents a collaboration between Delaunay and Guillaume Apollinaire (who came up with the name Orphism in 1911-1913) and the poet, Blaise Cendrars. In 1913 Cendrars and Delaunay had collaborated on the groundbreaking artist's book, "La prose du Transsibérien et de la Petite Jehanne de France (Prose of the Trans-Siberian and of Little Jehanne of France)." Fascinating that this same relationship would result in a similar style of production fifty-six years later. [42] pp. 4to. Accordion bound with white cloth front and rear boards and a Sonia Delaunay design gracing the front cover. Extremely clean and crisp within. 27 color lithographs of Delaunay's costume designs. Produced in a limited edition of 150 copies, numbers I-XXV were reserved for the authors, the remaining copies (XXVI-CL) are numbered and signed by both Delaunay and Damase at the colophon, this being #LIX (59). Housed in original scarlet cloth covered clamshell box with "Sonia Delaunay" printed in blue on cover and in Very Good condition with light scuffing and fading from time. OCLC lists only six institutions with a copy in their holdings, quite surprising given Delaunay's work crossing both art and costume design. Seller Inventory # 28044

About this Item: Istanbul: Sebah & Joaillier, 1880. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. This magnificent pair of panoramic photographs of Istanbul, measuring 11 ft. and 8 1⁄2 ft. respectively, provides sweeping views of the great buildings, monuments, and geographical features of the city. These include the city walls and seven towers, Süleymaniye Mosque, Sultanahmet Mosque (the Blue Mosque), Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, the Golden Horn, and the Bosphorus. The images also capture domestic and commercial architecture, daily street life, bridges, and the bustling waterway of the Golden Horn. The two towers from which these images are taken are prominent in the centers of their respective panoramas. The first series of photographs, a 10-part panorama, looks across Beyoglu (the European side of modern-day Istanbul known until the 20th century as Pera) and the Golden Horn toward the ancient city with its great mosques. This series of photographs was taken from the top of the fourteenth-century Galata Tower. The panorama is by Sebah & Joaillier, one of the most distinguished photography firms in late 19th-century Constantinople. [with] (ISTANBUL.) Berggren, G. Panorama of Constantinople, Taken from the Tower of Seraskierat. [Istanbul: G. Berggren, c. 1880s]. 8 albumen prints (each approx. 10 1/2 x13in., for a total of 10 1/2 x 103in.), unmounted, signed in the negative in the rightmost photograph. Lightly faded at edges, but generally in very good condition. The second panoramic view, an 8-part panorama, looks out across the old city and the Golden Horn toward the Galata Tower. This series of photographs was made from Beyazit Tower, a 279 ft. tall fire-watch tower on the main campus of present-day Istanbul University. This tower, on the former location of the Ottoman Ministry of War, or Seraskierat, is also known as the Tower of Seraskierat. The panorama is by Guillaume Berggren, the Swedish photographer who opened a studio in Constantinople in the early 1870s. Although Berggren’s smaller format panoramas turn up in the market occasionally, this large 8-part panorama, measuring 8 1⁄2 ft. long, is rarely seen for sale. “Berggren was a master of technique and composition, and produced some of the finest scenes of Istanbul and the Bosphorus” (Hannavy). Together these enormous panoramic photographs present a remarkable survey of the geography and architecture of Istanbul, prior to the onset of a century of dramatic change. 10 albumen prints (each approx. 10 3/4×133/8in., for a total of 10 3/4 x 134 in.) mounted on card, folded concertina-style. Oblong folio. Modern red morocco. Lightly faded at joints, but generally in excellent condition with strong contrasting tones. Seller Inventory # ABE-15979864073
