Après Zélia et Un chapeau pour voyager, Zélia Gàttai nous entraîne à nouveau dans l'intimité et la vie quotidienne d'un des plus célèbres écrivains de notre époque. La reine du bal nous fait revivre les années 1948 et 1949, si fertiles en événements pour elle et son mari Jorge Amado. Obligé de quitter le Brésil pour raisons politiques, Jorge Amado, déjà une des personnalités les plus populaires de son pays, séjourne en Europe où Zélia vient le retrouver avec leur bébé. C'est d'abord le Portugal, puis l'Italie, la Tchécoslovaquie, la Pologne, et enfin Paris où les Amado deviennent vite le centre d'un cercle d'écrivains. Carlos Scliar, Pablo Neruda, Paul Eluard, Jean-Paul Sartre, Aragon, Ilya Ehrenbourg, Pierre Seghers, tous viennent leur rendre visite au Grand Hôtel Saint-Michel, rue Cujas, devenu leur quartier général et où se déroule un perpétuel festival de culture, de talent, de gaieté et de charme. Les Amado se rendent en Union soviétique, à l'invitation de l'Union des écrivains, et ils y sont accueillis triomphalement. Mais au retour à Paris, à l'automne 1949, c'est le couperet: la convocation à la Préfecture de Police et l'arrêté d'expulsion. Les Amado ont quinze jours pour quitter la France.
