Synopsis The Fruit of Stone is the story of the lifelong friendship of two men and their love for the woman who eludes them. Though Gretchen is married to his best friend, McEban has been in love with her since they were children growing up on adjacent ranches in Wyoming. When she leaves her husband for a new life, the two men follow her in an odyssey across the American West that forces truths and reveals the mystical, sometimes fatal bonds of love and loyalty. Muscular, vivid, wise and painful, funny, and true; Mark Spragg's novel is entirely unforgettable. Rocky Mountain News Both the emotional depth and the linguistic play of Spragg's novel are surprisingly fresh and satisfying. More Reviews and Recommendations Biography "Before I was able to support myself through my writing I taught high school, built fences, wrangled horses, guided in the Rocky Mountains, worked on oil rigs, and shod horses to make a living," Mark Spragg revealed to us in our exclusive interview. "I found that while I prefer writing, I see all work as pretty much the same, and approach it with the same ethic: come early, stay late, and focus on the details.". Seller Inventory # 033186

About this Item: Birlinn General, United Kingdom, 2003. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. There are small paraffin-oil-lamp towns in many parts of the country for which Mr Swan is Fairy Godmother, perpetual Grand Plenipotentiary, and Deputy Providence. Half of his time in Glasgow is taken up with the execution of countless petty commissions for his rural customers and their friends, the selection and purchase of goods quite out of his drapery line. Jimmy Swan, the enigmatic commercial traveller, is another classic comic character from the pen of Neil Munro, the master Scottish humorist. The result of Swan s experiences is a wonderfully entertaining collection, allowing the reader a marvellous insight into daily life in the West of Scotland at the turn of the century. Each story is brimful of local and period detail and the editors have provided a full set of notes explaining those historical, cultural, biographical, linguistic and geographical references which may not be obvious to the twenty-first century reader - but which would have been very familiar from the news pages of their daily papers to the early twentieth-century reader. In addition a full introduction is given, setting these Glasgow tales in their context and providing information about their author, Neil Munro. Seller Inventory # ABS9781841582030

About this Item: Kuperard, United Kingdom, 2012. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Nigeria, the most populous country in Africa with an internal market of 150 million people and an economy growing at around 8 percent a year, is potentially Africa s next powerhouse. It is nearly one and a half times the size of Texas, with a landmass varying from sandy beaches and tropical jungles, to plains, mountains, and desert. This important West African nation is made up of 250 culturally distinct ethno-linguistic groups. The largest communities are the Hausa in the north, rooted in the Islamic city-states of the famed trans-Saharan trade routes; the Yoruba of the southwest, where ancient kingdoms nurtured some of Africa s best-known art forms; and the Igbo of the southeast, where decentralized, egalitarian communities have produced many of the country s most successful traders and businessmen. Nigeria has had a bad press: international reports of violence, corruption, and natural disasters completely overlook the vibrancy and artistic sophistication of its diverse cultural groups, most of whom live peacefully in mixed communities. Although Nigeria is the world s fifth-largest producer of oil, there is a huge disparity in income. The competition for scarce resources and the country s dense diversity have fostered ingenuity and perseverance on the part of its ambitious citizens. They are natural entrepreneurs, and intelligent and shrewd negotiators. They are also proud, and sensitive to criticism. Most are devout, gregarious, and hospitable, and disgusted by corruption. Now, in the twelfth consecutive year of democracy after years of military rule, major political and economic reforms are under way. `Culture Smart! Nigeria` is a unique introduction to life there today. Most of what is written about the country comes from the perspective of one or other tribe. There is nothing quite like this concise description of its major cultural traditions. The people most visitors will meet are well-educated, sophisticated, and well-versed in Western ways. Nonetheless, foreign businesspeople cannot hope to be successful without understanding the ancient and complex systems of behavior, values, and attitudes that underlie the country s vibrant social and business life. About this Item: Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd.?, 2004. Hardcover. Condition: New. First. Ramprasad Sen was bornin the second decade of the eighteenth century in Halishahar in (then) Bengal. He was a great saint in Shakta cult. But, he was also a natural poet andcomposer. The songs presented in this book are hymns to Goddess Mother Kali couched in rustic words andsymbols of everyday life. Yet, most of this symbolism is a rare mosaic ofthe occult mystery of Tantra shastra and carry a double meaning. Thus, flyingkites, the blind kites, the blind ox trudging routine endless circles of thevillage oil-machine (ghaani), the small town courtroom, the sailing craft oflife - are all symbols of the highest mystic Shakta worship of Goddess Durga orKali (Mahashakti). The English rendering aims to echo the nuances of theoriginal in its threefold uniqueness: simplicity and rustic symbols, their inner spiritual mystique, andmuse and rhymes. This book will treat the English speaking world to a taste ofrare Indian songs and poetry. Seller Inventory # MRML-9788121510851

Nigeria has had a bad press: international reports of violence, corruption, and natural disasters completely overlook the vibrancy and artistic sophistication of its diverse cultural groups, most of whom live peacefully in mixed communities. Although Nigeria is the worlds fifth-largest producer of oil, there is a huge disparity in income. The competition for scarce resources and the countrys dense diversity have fostered ingenuity and perseverance on the part of its ambitious citizens. Culture Smart! Nigeria is a unique introduction to life there today. Most of what is written about the country comes from the perspective of one or other tribe. There is nothing quite like this concise description of its major cultural traditions. The people most visitors will meet are well-educated, sophisticated, and well-versed in Western ways. Nonetheless, foreign businesspeople cannot hope to be successful without understanding the ancient and complex systems of behavior, values, and attitudes that underlie the countrys vibrant social and business life. About this Item: Createspace, United States, 2014. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. While there is debate about the number of indigenous people in Costa Rica prior to the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1502, few survived contact with Europeans. Today, the country s indigenous population makes up less than 2 percent of the total population. For nearly three centuries, Spain administered what is now Costa Rica as part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, under a military government. The Spanish optimistically called the country Rich Coast. Finding little gold or other valuable minerals in Costa Rica, however, the Spanish turned to agriculture. The small landowners relative poverty, the lack of a large indigenous labor force, the population s ethnic and linguistic homogeneity, and Costa Rica s isolation from the Spanish colonial centers in Mexico and the Andes contributed to the development of a relatively autonomous, individualistic, and egalitarian agrarian society. This tradition survived the widened class distinctions brought on by the introduction of banana and coffee cultivation in the 19th century and the subsequent accumulation of local wealth. Costa Rica joined other Central American provinces in 1821 in a joint declaration of independence from Spain. In 1838, long after the Central American Federation ceased to function in practice, Costa Rica formally withdrew and proclaimed itself a sovereign nation. An era of peaceful democracy in Costa Rica began in 1899, and has continued through today with only two lapses: 1917-19, when Federico Tinoco ruled as a dictator, and 1948, when Jose Figueres led an armed uprising in the wake of a disputed presidential election. The victorious junta from this 44-day civil war drafted a constitution guaranteeing free elections with universal suffrage and the abolition of the military. Figueres became a national hero, winning the first election under the new constitution in 1953. The lack of a military continues to be a source of great national pride, and Costa Rica is presently conducting an international public relations campaign to encourage other nations to follow suit for the purpose of global peace. The Costa Rican government has been very involved in managing the economy since the 1948 revolution. The government operates many state monopolies, including banking, insurance, and telecommunications (recently deregulated and now open to competition); controls the prices of a number of goods and services; and maintains protectionist trade laws. Government policy in the 1960s and 70s focused on making Costa Rica more self-sufficient, and the nation has enjoyed a gradual upward economic trend. However, with the increase in oil prices in the 1970s and sharp decreases in international coffee, banana, and sugar prices, Costa Rica s economy collapsed in 1980. Warfare in neighboring countries in the 1980s also affected the Costa Rican economy and society, shattering regional trade and bringing a large number of refugees and illegal aliens, particularly from Nicaragua, to the country. To quell the regional violence, President Oscar Arias Sanchez (1986 90) promoted a successful regional peace plan that resulted in his receipt of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987. Since 1948, Costa Rica has held 12 successive democratic presidential elections, more than any other Latin American country. Seller Inventory # APC9781502348098

About this Item: Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers Pvt. Ltd., 2004.

About this Item: Carbondale: Southern Illinois University Press, ()., 1971. Royal octavo, gray cloth (hardcover), silver letters, xiii + 392 pp. Very Good, with two stamps identifying it as ex-libris and light soiling to page edges; in a torn, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: Vocabulary Change by Gordon R. Wood is a study of word usage and its changing patterns, both past and present, in eight of the southern states. The area encompasses Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Tennesee. The data collected results from the choices made by over a thousand native southerners from words listed in a word questionnaire prepared and distributed by the author. Choices between such things as mosquito hawk and darning needle, spider and skillet, kerosene and coal oil were indicated on the questionnaire and the responses were systematically recorded and analyzed by computer. From these results the tables and maps were made, showing community preferences of a limited geographical range (extending no more than a few counties in any direction), and far-ranging preferences which extend from the Savannah River in Georgia to the westernmost county in Oklahoma. After describing the subareas which have distinctive local vocabularies, the study goes on to examine more than one hundred sets of synonyms which made up the text of the questionnaire. This item by item inventory is arranged so that the vocabulary shift which accompanied the change from pioneer agricultural societies to urban-influenced societies is presented in roughly sequential order. The purpose of the original survey was to sample the familiar vocabulary of all age groups in the eight states, with some preference being given to the middle- and older-aged residents. The responses were put on punch cards, tabulated and recorded by the computer, and printed out in several forms. From the lists, maps were prepared which show the local choice of more than eighty words. Further computations produced lists of words by frequency of use in the entire regions, which appear in the text as three separate tables. But the study goes beyond the mere presentation of maps and tables. Southern Americana, American South, Linguistics, Language, Americana, American Culture, American History, U. S. History. xnxsl.

Dodgson started the telling of this tale on July 4, 1862 during a rowing boat tour on the Thames River at Oxford. Pastor Robinson Duckworth and three girls were members of the party: Alice Liddell, the ten-year old daughter of the dean of Christ Church, and her sisters Lorina, aged thirteen, and Edith, eight years of age. The poem at the beginning of the story states that the threesome urged Dodgson to tell them a story. And so he set out to present the first version of the tale, admittedly with some initial reluctance. Now and then, within the broader tale, reference is made to all five of the boat party; the story first appeared in print in 1865. Alice s Adventures in Wonderland has been translated into many languages but never before in Picard dialect. The present translation in Borain Picard is intended to fill in the gap. In its dialectal meaning, Picard is the name of an important linguistic family which covers a large territory in the north-west of France and the western part of the Belgian province of Hainaut. It is one of the Romance languages that make up the langues d oil, such as Lorrain, Champenois, Normand, Poitevin, Walloon etc. In Belgium, four of these families are represented: Lorrain and Champenois in two tiny parts of the province of Luxembourg, Walloon in the larger part of the Francophone area. Borain Picard is the dialect spoken in what is called Le Borinage, an area situated south-west of the capital of the province of Hainaut, not far from the French border. Very Good In Wrappers. 67 pages. paperback. Cover illustration: Cy Twombly, 'Tiznit' (1953). ISBN: 9780520258747. inventory # 36830. FROM THE PUBLISHER - At once uncompromising and highly inventive, David Lau's poems are imbued with a musicality that lightens the dark undertones of spoliation and entropy. Many of the poems embody a nexus of interaction with historical events, films, modernist poetic texts, and works of art—but from this allusion and evocation, a multifarious voice emerges. In these pages, the electric linguistic experiment meets a new urban, postnatural poetics, one in which poetry is not just a play of signs and seemings but also a prismatic investigation of our contemporary order: ‘Hurry up before our factory leaves. / The first column of the Freedom Tower / traduces its ensorcellment in the facade.’ Here is a poetry both deeply lyrical and resistant, a poetry relentless in its invention and its stance against the apathy of convention and consumption.
