About this Item: Rowohlt, Berlin, 1936. FIRST EDITION. Octavo. 85, [3] pp. With 24 black and white photographic plates of skiing First Edition, a very good copy in the original exuberant binding designed by Herbert Bayer (1900-1985), of the major figures of the Bauhaus movement; Bayer also designed the book, and remains and an important typographical contribution by him. Of all the artists to pass through the Bauhaus, none lived the ideal of total integration of the arts into life like Bayer. He was a graphic designer, typographer, photographer, painter, environmental designer, sculptor and exhibition designer. Bayer entered the Bauhaus in 1921 and was greatly influenced by Kandinsky, Moholy-Nagy and El Lissitzky. He left the Bauhaus in 1923, but returned in 1925 to become a master in the school. During his tenure he produced many designs that became quintessential examples of the Bauhaus "style." Bayer was instrumental in moving the Bauhaus to purely Sans Serif usage in all its work. Curiously, the present volume was printed entirely in Fraktur type -- perhaps an allusion to the socio-political developments in Germany at this time. IN EXCELLENT CONDITION; lower cover slightly soiled, but an attractive copy, suitable for exhibition Original publisher's cloth with PHOTOMONTAGE OF A SKIER BY HERBERT BEYER. Seller Inventory # 262

About this Item: New York City, NY: Museum Of Modern Art, 1969. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 220 pages. Published in 1969. Retrospective Exhibition Monograph. One of the greatest books on its subject ever published. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a tiny first print run as a hardcover original only. There is no ISBN. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by the Museum of Modern Art: Regular-sized volume format. The boards are, legendarily so, unique: A silkscreen pictorial cover that is archivally embossed/printed on aluminium metal that is hinged at the spine (in order to hold the contents). A sublime work of art in and of itself, it was created by Anders Osterlin from an original photograph by Alicia Legg. Curated with an Essay by K. G. Pontus Hulten, one of the greatest art scholars of the 20th century. Art by various contributors, a Who's Who of 20th-century art history. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper in the United States to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Published on the occasion of the landmark retrospective exhibition held at the Museum of Modern Art New York (MOMA) in 1969, which travelled on to several other major venues. Presents the Museum of Modern Art's "The Machine: As Seen At The End of The Mechanical Age". The single most important and influential retrospective on its subject. Creator and destroyer at a time when its reign is threatened by other tools, here is THE exhaustive and definitive look at The Machine, as it has inspired virtually every major figure of the 20th century (in no particular order) : George Melies, Boccioni, Man Ray, Ribemont-Dessaignes, Max Ernst, Popova, Laszlo Moholy-Nagy, Fernand Leger, Ettore Bugatti, Alexander Calder, Rene Magritte, Marcel Duchamp, Francis Picabia, Hans Bellmer, Tinguely, Claes Oldenburg, Giorgio de Chirico, Andreas Feininger, Alberto Giacometti, George Grosz, Hanna Hoch, Paul Klee, El Lissitzky, Malevich, Bruno Munari, Robert Rauschenberg, James Rosenquist, Kurt Schwitters, Severini, Tobey, Vesnin, Tatlin, and perhaps most important of all, the Bauhaus School. Among others. "The Machine", as an idea and an actual tool, has provoked and stimulated artists since time immemorial. Think only of Leonardo da Vinci's fantastical mechanical inventions, meticulously imagined and drawn by the greatest artist/genius of the Western tradition, many of which since realized in our time. "Visionary" has always meant having a cutting-edge, revolutionary, and "sui generis" view of art (as well as worldview) that visualizes another world we call The Future. The fantastic metal cover of this outstanding survey is a work of art that no serious book or art collection could do without. An absolute "must-have" title for art collectors. This title is a great book. This is one of few copies of the Retrospective Exhibition Monograph still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, a beauty. Every single internal page is unread and pristine. Please note: Copies available online command hundreds, even thousands, of dollars. This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with photographic plates. Some of the greatest artists of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. no. Seller Inventory # 20304
