About this Item: Pantheon Books, New York, NY, 1971. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1st edition hardback is in fine condition, clean, unmarked. Dust jacket is near fine with 1 half-inch tear and light wear. "Henry Mayhew (1812-1887) was a notable Victorian journalist. He left for posterity a highly readable and memorable three-volume book, London Labour and the London Poor (1851): three volumes based on 82 letters written for the Morning Chronicle in 1849 and 1850. Packed with anecdotes, it is unusual in the rich literature of poverty in London. This volume offers a selection from these letters, each of which averaged 10,500 words - a total of nearly one million words. "Do you read the Morning Chronicle?" Douglas Jerrold asked Mrs Cowden Clarke in February 1850. "Do you devour those marvellous revelations of the inferno of misery, of wretchedness, that is smouldering under our feet? .To read of the suffering of one class, and the avarice, the tyranny, the pocket cannibalism of the other, makes one almost wonder that the world should go on.". About this Item: George Braziller, Inc., New York, 1959. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good+. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. Illustrated by Ronald Searle (illustrator). 1st American Edition; 1st Printing. B&W Illustrations; The book is in Very Good+ condition and has a Very Good+ dust jacket. There is some very beginning toning / sunning to top and bottom edges of book cover. The text pages are clean and bright. The reverse of the frontispiece has two tape shadows where something was taped to the page, there is also some associated shadowing to reverse of half title page for the same reason. The front endpaper has a previous owner's inked name, date and place. The dust jacket does show some toning due to acid content of paper (especially the spine and spine joints). The top spine end of the front dust jacket cover has two small semi-closed edge tears. Rear top edge of dust jacket has one one inch long semi-closed tear as well as some beginning nicking and rubbing / wear to top spine end of dust jacket. "Not for many years has a series in Punch aroused so much comment and enthusiasm as the New Mayhew, in which Ronald Serle and Alex Atkinson, collaborating for the first time, brought all their perceptive wit to bear on a survey of what might be called the New Poor, with a glance at What Really Goes On in the Big City." "In 1958 The Big City or the New Mayhew was published. Written by Atkinson and illustrated by Ronald Searle, this collection of humorous character studies had appeared previously in Punch. These studies were based upon the journalism of Henry Mayhew, particularly his famous survey London Labour and the London Poor which appeared in the Morning Chronicle newspaper, throughout the 1840s.". About this Item: Frank Cass and Co Limited, London England, 1983. Trade Paperback. Condition: VERY GOOD ( AVERAGE). No Jacket. Cover By Zena Flax (of the Interior of a Northumberland Coal Mine ) (illustrator). This the First Edition. Henry Mayhew's London Labour and the London Poor, written for the Morning Chronicle during 1849 to 1851, was only a part of a vast general survey covering the industrial, manufacturing and agricultural areas of England and Wales. This journalistic precedent set the state of the working classes of Britain before the public with clarity, insight and honesty. Consisting mainly of verbatim statements from the people themselves, it was as though the inarticulate masses had learned to speak with one firm voice. These volumes will do much to rectify the deficiencies in our knowledge of working-class life in 19th-century England and Wales, and to sharpen our perspective on and increase our understanding of the impact of industrialization .216pp including index. About this Item: Frank Cass and Co Limited, London England, 1983. Trade Paperback. Condition: FINE ( AS BRAND NEW).
