About this Item: Motilal Banarsidass Publishers Pvt. Ltd., 1997. Hardcover. Condition: New. This book presents Buddhism from theBuddhist point of view. It is an earnest attempt of eleven devout Buddhist scholar s to describe the beliefs and practices of the Buddhist world twenty-five centuries after the Buddha. The need for such a book grewww out of conversations among fellows of the National Council of UAS on Religion in Higher Education. It was agreed that a fuller understanding of the leading non-Christian reiigions requires books written by men speaking from the point of view of their own faiths, and edited by a Westerner to make the meaning clear to readers brought up in the Greek-Hebrew-Christian Tradition. Bhikhu J.Kashyap of India has contributed the first chapter on the origin and expansion of buddhism. U.Thittila of Rengoon wrote the second chapter on the fundamental principles of the Theravada Buddhism. Balangoda Ananda Maitreya of Ceylon who wrote the third chapter was recommended as a man who cansdpaek for all Thravada countries. Printed Pages: 162. Seller Inventory # 51970

About this Item: Artibus Asiae, Ascona, Switzerland, 1969. Cloth. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine DJ. First edition. 83 pages of text plus 71 b/w photo illus. After the breakup of the Guptas empire, a distinctive architectural style was developed in the Kathiawar peninsula of southwest Gujarat under two local dynasties, from the mid sixth century to the mid tenth. The numerous stone temple remains show a preference for strongly architectonic designs with little sculptural enrichment. Outside of this general agreement, wide variations existed in ground plans and superstructures. The book brings together information which has never before been presented in this comprehensive way, much of it unpublished. A systematic analysis of all major features used is supplemented by careful descriptions of the individual temples. This double approach, which emphasises the logic of the stylistic sequence, makes the book the first truly scientific study of an important phase of Indian architectural history. Chapters: Architectural background - The Discoveries - Ground Plans - The Superstructure - Classification and Chronology Postsript and glossary. Hardcover with jacket & protective paper slipcase. In fine condition. 12.25 by 9.25 inches. Supplementum XXVI. Seller Inventory # 2362

About this Item: Project of History of Indian Science, Philosophy and Culture/MRML, 2016. Hardcover. Condition: New. First. 300pp. The volumes of the PROJECT ON THE HISTORY OF SCIENCE, PHILOSOPHY AND CULTURE IN INDIAN CIVILIZATION aim at discovering the main aspects of Indias heritage and present them in an interrelated way. In spite of their unitary look, these volumes recognize the difference between the areas of material civilization and those of ideational culture. The project is not being executed by a single group of thinkers and writers who are methodologically uniform or ideologically identical in their commitments. The Project is marked by what may be called methodological pluralism. Inspite of its primarily historical character, this project, both in its conceptualization and execution, has been shaped by scholars drawn from different disciplines. It is for the first time that an endeavour of such a unique and comprehensive character has been undertaken to study critically a major world civilization like India. In this volume an attempt is made to present a panoramic view of the development of art and architecture during the early and the medieval periods of Indian history in the whole country from Kashmir in the north to Kerala in the South, from Maharashtra in the west to Bengal in the east. Altogether there are sixteen research papers which have given authentic accounts about the material, technique, style and idiom of the prominent religious and secular architectural structures, sculptures and other historical monuments constructed at different times under the patronage of various rulers of great kingdoms.
