About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Captain Keene has made an interesting contribution to the literature of the present war in his account of service, which covers the experience of a young officer in the making and on the battle front, --the transformation of an artist into a first-class machine-gun officer. He covers the training period at home and abroad and the work at the front. This direct and interesting account should serve to bring home to all of us an appreciation of how much has to be done before troops can be made effective for modern war, the cost of unpreparedness, and the disadvantage under which troops, partially equipped, labor when they meet highly organized ones, prepared, even to the last detail, for all the exigencies of modern war. It also brings out the splendid spirit of Canada, the Mother Country, and the distant Colonies, --the spirit of the Empire, united and determined in a just cause. This is the list of the fleet. It is written here in the order in which they are sailing. Three warships are heading the fleet; the flagship is the H.M.S. Charybdis, commanded by Admiral Wemyss, who distinguished himself a few weeks ago in the Battle of Heligoland. H.M.S. Diana H.M.S. Eclipse H.M.S. About this Item: Forgotten Books, 2015. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Excerpt from Annals of the Astrophysical Observatory of the Smithsonian Institution, Vol. 4 The present Volume IV of the Annals of the Astrophysical Observatory covers a well-marked epoch in the work of the Astrophysical Observatory . Beginning immediately after the establishment of the real short-internal variability of the sun by the Algerian expeditions of 1911 and 1912, the period includes: The installation of the tower telescope on Mount Wilson in 1913 and the investigation there-with of the distribution of radiation over the solar disk and its variability; the preparation of automatic self-registering pyrheliometers, which, in 1914, were exposed from sounding balloons at an altitude of 25,000 meters with atmospheric pressure 3 centimeters, and giving there a maximum solar radiation intensity value of l.84 calories per square centimeter, confirmed our results on the mean value of the solar constant; the investigations of Clayton on the correlation of the Mount Wilson observation of the solar variability with terrestrial meteorological conditions; the establishment by the Smithsonian private funds of a station at Calama, Chile, cooperating with Mount Wilson in the observation of solar variability; finally, the transfer, through the generosity of Mr. John A. Roebling, of the Mount Wilson work to Mount Harqua Hala, Arizona, and of the Calama work to Mount Montezuma, Chile, so that the investigation of solar variability will be continued at two stations 4,000 miles apart in cloudless regions of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, as far as possible daily, until it is determined whether this observation is a worth-while meteorological element for forecasting and for the study of the problems of the atmosphere. The work described in this volume owes a very large part of its value to the following members of the Observatory staff: Mr. A. Kramer, for 30 years, instrument maker of the. Astrophysical Observatory, who has constructed nearly all of the apparatus employed in the research; Miss F. A. Graves, for 12 years computer; Mrs. A. M. Bond, computer since 1918; Mr. A. F. Moore, director of the Hump Mountain and Chile stations from 1917 to 1920, and now director at Mount Harqua Hala, Arizona - Mr. Moore s versatility, efficiency and enthusiasm, and the sterling character of his work have all been abundantly demonstrated - and Mr. L. H. Abbot, assistant at Hump Mountain and Chile from 1917 to 1920, and now director of the Chile station. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About this Item: FBC LTD, 2017. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from Early Discoveries by Spaniards in New Mexico: Containing an Account of the Castles of Cibola, and the Present Appearance of Their Ruins I had read, with considerable interest, the notice of ruins on the Gila and Rio Grande, of a different character from any discovered in Mexico, Yucatan, or Guatimala. I was convinced that the received notion, that these were the original seats of the successive swarms of Olmecs, Toltecs, and Aztecs, who peopled Anahuac before the Mexicans, was without probability. The early Mexican historians, who have preserved the traditions of that people, speak of these migrations coming from the North and North-West, and even some of them from the East; but this is extremely vague, and would apply to Texas and the Valley of the Mississippi, with more propriety than to the limited tract of county on the heads of the Rio Grande, and the Colorado of California, possessing small valleys, fertile, it is true, but surrounded by mountains and deserts. It is, at the same time, entirely at variance with the idea of different stoppages, or resting places, of these migrations, and the centuries occupied in completing them. The assigning to the Casaa Grandes of Montezuma, the honor of being their great stopping places, is a comparatively new idea, never hinted until at least a century after their discovery. I regard these ruins as the evidence of the existence of a peculiar people, having no connection with the Aztecs or Mexicans, separated from them by impassable deserts, and having no communication with them or knowledge of their existence. Their habits and character were entirely the reverse of a migratory people. These habits fixed them permanently to the spots which they occupied. There never was a people less fitted for migration than the occupants of the castles of Cibola. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. About this Item: Texas A M University Press, United States, 2004. Hardback. Condition: New. Mimi Hoppe Wolf (illustrator). New. Language: English . Brand New Book. At the end of the twentieth century roughly 265 million people visited the 374 sites in the American National Park System. These places, designated and protected because of their significance to our nation s historical and natural heritage, contain some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States--landscapes that naturally lend themselves to outdoor recreation. In this book, veteran parks interpreter Ro Wauer introduces the pleasures of birding in the national parks of the American Southwest. From California to Texas, from hugely popular destinations such as Arizona s Grand Canyon to the mostly undiscovered shores of Amistad National Recreation Area, Wauer visits seventeen sites and gives us his advice on what birds to expect to see and where and how to find them. Written by a birder for birders, this book introduces readers to some of the best birding north of the Mexican border, as well as some of the most impressive scenery anywhere. Wauer takes readers on a personal tour, pointing out where to go to see a vast array of each park s bird life: Le Conte s Thrashers in Death Valley, Clark s and Western Grebes at Lake Mead, Phainopeplas at Organ Pipe Cactus, Lucy s Warblers at Saguaro, Peregrine Falcons in Grand Canyon, Cave Swallows at Carlsbad Caverns, Magnificent Hummingbirds at Guadalupe Mountains, and Colima Warblers in Big Bend. Birding the Southwestern National Parks is written for anyone visiting, planning to visit, or dreaming of visiting the Southwestern national parks. The Southwestern Parks: Death Valley National Park, California and Nevada Joshua Tree National Park, California Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Nevada and Arizona Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona Sunset Crater Volcano, Wupatki, and Walnut Canyon National Monuments, Arizona Montezuma Castle National Monument, Arizona Tonto National Monument, Arizona Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona Saguaro National Park, Arizona Chiricahua National Monument, Arizona Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks, New Mexico and Texas White Sands National Monument, New Mexico Big Bend National Park, Texas Amistad National Recreation Area, Texas. About this Item: Texas A M University Press, United States, 2004. Hardback. Condition: New. Mimi Hoppe Wolf (illustrator). New.. About this Item: Taylor Francis Inc, United Kingdom, 2003. Paperback. Condition: New. 11th Revised edition. Language: English . This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. Cuban Communism remains, like its previous ten editions, an important contribution to the field of Cuban Studies. It includes many useful chronological facts, as well as a selection of Fidel Castro s speeches which are interesting and informative for any reader interested in the island. -- Maria Gropas, Department of Social Anthropology, University of Cambridge This new 11th edition of a classic text, come to be known as the bible of Cuban Studies, emphasizes two key issues of the twenty-first century. First, transition concerns in a world without Castro, and second, the continuing embargo of Cuba by the United States in the aftermath of a major change in the presidency. Cuban Communism has been updated to take account of changes in the 44 years of Castro s rule since seizing power in 1959. In addition to articles and essays that represent new developments in Cuba, the work boasts a database upgrade that makes it more important to students, scholars, and researchers. The volume has expanded the section on future prospects for civil society and democracy in a post-Castro environment; including Regime Change in Cuba by Eusebio Mujal-Leon and Joshua W. Busby; Transition Scenarios by Randolph H. Pherson, and A Policy Conundrum over Cuba by Edward Gonzalez. It also contains a chronology of events from 1959 through 2002. Finally, the new work contains a carefully constructed Who s Who of important players in Cuba and the regime during the Castro period up to the present. Other articles new to the 11th edition of Cuban Communism are by Ernesto Betancourt, Cuba s Balance of Payment Gap ; Carmelo Mesa-Lago, The Cuban Economy From 1999-2001 ; Taylor Boas, The Internet and U.S. Policy toward Cuba ; Aldo M. Leiva, Environmental Technology Transfer and Foreign Investment ; Moises Asis, Judaism in Cuba ; Wolf Grabendorff, A View from the European Union. More than ever, it is a must volume for those interested in political systems and social structures. Irving Louis Horowitz is Hannah Arendt Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Sociology and Political Science at Rutgers University. Among his works are Three Worlds of Development, Beyond Empire and Revolution, and his Bacardi Lectures on Cuba that was published as The Conscience of Worms and the Cowardice of Lions. Jaime Suchlicki is Bacardi Professor of History at the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Miami, and executive director of its Cuban-American and Cuban Center. He is author of From Columbus to Castro, University Students and Revolution in Cuba, and Mexico: From Montezuma to Nafta and Beyond. Seller Inventory # BTE9780765805201
