About this Item: Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd, 2001. Hardcover. Condition: New. Arun Joshi?s fictional world is most strange. Peeling the multiple layers of artificiality, his protagonists seek to confront the mystery of life beyond the last labyrinth. His work represents a unique depiction of the dual between the internal and the external, the intuitive and the imposed. He catches the bewilderment of the individual psyche, confronted with the overbearing socio-cultural environment and the ever-beckoning modern promise of self-gratification/self-fulfilment. In the face of this dual onslaught his protagonists ? Ratan, Billy Biswas, Som, Sindi Oberoi and others ? are seen poised tantalizingly at different junctures of the philosophic spectrum. Applying sociological, psycho-analytic, structural and other approaches of formal textual analysis, the essays in the present anthology take a fresh look at Arun Joshi`s works, revealing areas and stances, hitherto left unexplored, offer critical insights into the working of the protagonists` minds, besides scrutinizing the rhetorical devices and formal strategies, deployed by the novelist for coalescing the matter with the manner. An indispensable source-book for students, researchers and teachers of Indian English and Commonwealth literature in general and Arun Joshi in particular. An insightful and thought-provoking casebook for researchers in Philosophy, Psychology and Sociology. Printed Pages: 168. Seller Inventory # 22969

About this Item: Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd, 1998. Hardcover. Condition: New. Indian Literature in English incorporates Indian themes and experience in a framework that is a blend of Indian and Western aesthetics. This often confronts creative writers with a series of difficult choices. Involved in an intractable tight rope walking, how the literatures respond to the exacting requirement of making their experience fit an a priori mould is sought to be examined in the present Volume of this anthology. Aiming to capture in all its complex nuances the distinctive identity of Indian English Literature ? as darshan and as a formal artistic construct ? against the background of the particular problems confronting the creative writers, the collection includes critiques of the foremost as well as the latest works of a number of writers ? Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, Jayant Mahapatra, Mulk Raj Anand, R.K. Narayan, Bhabani Bhattacharya, Manohar Malgonkar, Kamala Markandaya, Ruth Prawer Jhabwala, Anita Desai, Arun Joshi, Namita Gokhale, Malayatoor Ramakrishanan and Makarand Paranjape. Affording fresh perspectives on popular works, facilitating a through revision of cliched readings, and incisive studies of recent works, the present Volume steers Indian English critical practice to a new direction. About this Item: Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd, 2000. Hardcover. Condition: New. The present anthology of critical essays on Twentieth Century English Literature seeks to put together the body of writing ? criticism, poetry, fiction, short-story, ? in England, America, Australia, Africa and India in the present age, to discover how, despite its seeming divergence and dissimilarities, it falls into a broad pattern with regard to the choice of themes and formal strategies. The essays included are theoretical, com parative and exigetical, expounding move ments like Modernism and Post-Modernism; critical perspectives like the Scientifico-Psychological Approach and its practical application, and critiques of T.S. Eliot, Thomas Hardy, E.M. Forster, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, Evelyn Waugh, G.B. Shaw, Harold Pinter, Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, Wole Soyinka, Manohar Malgonkar, Nayantara Sahgal, C.J. Koch and Frank Moorhouse. The anthology reveals ?the family re semblance? in twentieth century English literature irrespective of geographic and cultural barriers, reinforcing the view that in the ?global village? that the world has become, literature in English all over the world in the modern context has come to assume the form of a community-discourse. About this Item: Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd, 2001. Hardcover. Condition: New. Post-modernism with its self-contradictory implications, its self-conscious deployment of trickery playfulness and unexplained supernaturalism, its questioning of universal truths and its penchant for apocalyptic content and subversive strategies seems too heady a brew for readers to enjoy. The present volume isolates the key concepts of post-modernism through illustrations from the works of John Fowles, Thomas Pynchon, William Golding, Salman Rushdie, Vladimir Nabakov, Samuel Beckett, James Joyce, Malcolm Lowry, Iris Murdoch, Gabriel Garcia Marquiz, Mario Vargas Llosa and Isabel Allende. These concepts are then placed in a theoretical framework with reference to critics and thinkers ranging from Roland Barthes, Alain Robbe-Grillet, Terry Eagleton to the structuralists and the post-structuralists. In addition, the volume incorporates incisive articles from this critical perspective analysing the novels of writers ranging from Iris Murdoch, Mark Twain, Graham Greene, Ken Kesey, Salman Rushdie and Mahasweta Devi to Rukun Advani.
