The information comes from a rare 1881 book, entitled History of Northern Wisconsin. The booklet is printed single-sided. The front cover is a parchtex card stock, protected with a vinyl sheet. We've enlarged the Pepin area of a map from the original book, and included it along with two other maps of historic interest. Communities currently listed for this area by the National Association of Counties include: Albany, Arkansaw. Durand (County Seat), Frankfort, Lima, Pepin, Stockholm, Waterville, Waubeek e. (Some towns may not be mentioned in the booklet.) Among the many subjects included are: Location and Natural Resources; Fort Beauharnais, an early trading post on Lake Pepin; John McCain, a raft pilot and Pepin's first white settler; Other early Settlers; Firsts -- birth, religious service, stage line; County officers; County Courthouse and attorneys; "Mag" Wheeler Murder Case; Newspapers; Miles Durand Prindle; More firsts from Durand; Churches; Societies; History of Durand; Villages of Pepin, Arkansas and Stockholm; and other bits of history and trivia. In 1879, a relatively short time before this material was originally printed, an incident occurred that attracted much publicity -- the illegal lynching of the admitted killer of the Coleman Brothers. A newsreporter gives a detailed account of the hanging of a man named Williams (also known as Ed Maxwell) by a large crowd of citizens; and other interesting bits of history and trivia. Attention Genealogists: This booklet contains biographies of many county residents of the late 1800s. Some of these are brief, but others include family members, affiliations, war records, and business activities, in the course of which they often shed light on area businesses, churches, professions and institutions, and on news events. Paperback. Condition: Very Good. From fetuses scanned ultrasonically to computer hackers in daycare, contemporary children are increasingly rendered cyborg by their immersion in technoculture. As we are faced with reproductive choices connected directly with technologies, we often have trouble gaining perspective on our own cultural co-dependency with these very same technologies. Our notions of fetal health, maternal risk and child IQ are inseparable from them. CyborgBabies tracks the process of reproducing children in symbiosis with pervasive technology and offers a range of perspectives, from resistance to ethnographic analysis to science fiction. Cultural anthropologists and social critics offer cutting-edge ethnographies, critiques, and personal narratives of cyborg conceptions (sperm banks, IVF, surrogacy) and prenatal (mis)diagnosis (DES, ultrasound, amniocentesis); the technological de- and reconstruction of birth in the hospital (electronic fetal monitors, epidurals); and the effects of computer simulation games and cyborg toys and stories on children's emergent consciousness. Contributors include Janet Isaacs Ashford, Elizabeth Cartwright, David Chamberlain, Jennifer Croissant, Charis M. Cussins, Robbie Davis-Floyd, Joseph Dumit, Eugenia Georges, Anne Hill, Mizuko Ito, Emily Martin, Steven Daniel Mentor, Janneli F. Miller, Lisa Mitchell, Lisa Jean Moore, Rayna Rapp, Matthew A. Schmidt, Syvia Sensiper, Elizabeth Roberts and Sherry Turkle. Examining the increasing cyborgification of the American child, from conception through birth and beyond, Cyborg Babies considers its implications for human cultural and psychological evolution. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
