About this Item: John Murray Publishers, London, 1954. 1st Edition. Hardbound 8vo (about 8.75 inches tall) 284 pages. Index. Description: Includes eight black and white plates. Following is taken from the publisher's blurb: ''These hitherto unpublished letters cover a vital period in the life of Elizabeth Barrett. The years 1836-46 saw the arrival of the Barrett family in London, Elizabeth's breakdown in health, the exile in Torquay, the capital tragedy of the death, by drowning, of a beloved brother, the establishment of her poetic reputation, and the long incarceration in the dark bedroom in Wimpole Street. They saw also the arrival of the first letters of Robert Browning, his first visits, and the whole fabulous sequence of events culminating in a secret marriage and the flight to Italy on September 19, 1846. No other letters introduce us so intimately to the domestic life of Wimpole Street. We are privileged to overhear the preoccupations, opinions, topics and scandals that engaged the mind and tongue of literary London during the first nine years of 'Queen Victoria's reign.'' BINDING/CONDITION: bright red cloth with gilt text; a Very Good book, with a Very Good- dust jacket; publisher's price on the jacket flap is intact. ISBN: B0000CIW66. Seller Inventory # 014761

About this Item: Random House, New York, 1996. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good +. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good +. Stated First Edition. I didn't read Henry James until quite late in life (aside from "Portrait of a Lady" and "Daisy Miller", the two we used to get in high school and college, which is a different animal altogether than reading for pleasure. I fell so hard for James that I read about ten or twelve of his masterpieces in one giant gulp. This is a good biography, but if you don't read it, at least read James's great novels. 550 pages, dark brown paper-covered hardboards with black cloth spine, gilt monogram on front, gilt print on spine, text has a 16-page section of photos. Boards are clean and straight, spine ends are mildly rubbed, binding is good, top textblock is soiled and has a red dot, text is clean and unmarked. Dust jacket is black with a color paining of James, white print on front, maroon spine with white print. DJ is mildly rubbed at the top edges and the spine ends, has a couple of very tiny, closed tears. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Seller Inventory # B07231
