Vickram has come to Uganda on a quest to look for his biological father. His mother s secret is buried in a deep corner of his heart, and it has been haunting him day and night. Then an opportunity comes his way: to work in a mission hospital in Gulu, a small town situated in the northern province of Uganda. Life seems to continue at a steady pace until the day that a political scenario changes in Uganda, leaving him trapped between choosing his beloved Tanya and his quest. About this Item: Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing | Prevalence and Precipitating Factors Among Patients with Epilepsy on Treatment Attending Mulago Hospital | This book is the subject of a study that sought to determine the prevalence and precipitating factors of breakthrough seizures in adults with epilepsy attending Mulago hospital. Break through seizures are associated with premature mortality and increased morbidity but their precipitating factors have not been definitively studied in the Africa setting. This book plugs that information gap. Knowledge of prevalence and associated factors provides preliminary data regarding the extent of the problem as well as providing a stage to address these problems. The study of 256 patients found prevalence of breakthrough seizures among epilepsy patients to be 75.3%. Breakthrough seizures were significantly associated with non-compliance (p0.0001), duration of treatment (p=0.004) and menses (p=0.013). The commonest precipitating factors in decreasing frequency were non-compliance (46.6%), infections (36.6%), menses (14.5%) and stress (9.8%). | Format: Paperback | Language/Sprache: english | 52 pp. Seller Inventory # K9783659571121

About this Item: HIPUganda and Ydoc Foundation, The Neterlands and Uganda, 2014. Soft cover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. The noun Ebifananyi (which is the plural, singular is Ekifananyi) comes from the verb Kufanana, and means to be similar to. It is the Luganda word not only for drawings, or paintings or photographs, but for every two dimensional likeness. Ebifananyi is also the title of the series of at least four publications by History In Progress Uganda (HIPUganda). Each book will start from one photo collection in Uganda and explore its narrative possibilities in images supported by words. When HIPUganda was initiated by Andrea Stultiens and Rumanzi Canon its first aim was to digitize photographic material in Uganda to prevent the loss of its content that is often threatened by challenging conservational circumstances. But since both Andrea and Rumanzi are image makers themselves and not archivist or conservators, the idea was also to create possibilities to engage with the digitized material. Archives are dead until their content is handled by people connecting it to their reality in one way or the other. Ebifananyi presents the results of engagement with archives by the HIP initiators and a wider circle of Ugandans in compelling stories and beautifully designed and printed books. Deo Kyakulagira (1940-2000) lived for his family and photography. He operated several studios, among which Central Art Studio Ltd. from the early 1970s until his untimely death in 2000. He worked for the ministry of agriculture and for the department of medical illustration of Mulago Hospital. Deo Kyakulagira did not exhibit his work during his lifetime. Like many of his colleagues he was not recognised as an author for the work he did. A wonderful series of self portraits made in various dark rooms and studios shows the pride Kyakulagira took in his work and justifies his late recognition as an artist. In Ebifananyi I the reader gets to know Deo Kyakulagira through the likenesses he produced of himself, and the way he documented the world around him, partly as a father, partly as a professional photographer. Stories told by family members and others remembering Central Art Studio Ltd give an idea of the context in which Central Art Studio ltd operated and developed when Deo Kyakulagira ran it. About this Item: Russell Sage Foundation, United States, 2011. Hardback. Condition: New. Reprint. Language: English . This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. Ethnically homogenous communities often do a better job than diverse communities of producing public goods such as satisfactory schools and health care, adequate sanitation, and low levels of crime. Coethnicity reports the results of a landmark study that aimed to find out why diversity has this cooperation-undermining effect. The study, conducted in a neighborhood of Kampala, Uganda, notable for both its high levels of diversity and low levels of public goods provision, hones in on the mechanisms that might account for the difficulties diverse societies often face in trying to act collectively. The Mulago-Kyebando Community Study uses behavioral games to explore how the ethnicity of the person with whom one is interacting shapes social behavior. Hundreds of local participants interacted with various partners in laboratory games simulating real-life decisions involving the allocation of money and the completion of joint tasks. Many of the subsequent findings debunk long-standing explanations for diversity s adverse effects. Contrary to the prevalent notion that shared preferences facilitate ethnic collective action, differences in goals and priorities among participants were not found to be structured along ethnic lines. Nor was there evidence that subjects favored the welfare of their coethnics over that of non-coethnics. When given the opportunity to act altruistically, individuals did not choose to benefit coethnics disproportionately when their actions were anonymous. Yet when anonymity was removed, subjects behaved very differently. With their actions publicly observed, subjects gave significantly more to coethnics, expected their partners to reciprocate, and expected that they would be sanctioned for a failure to cooperate. This effect was most pronounced among individuals who were otherwise least likely to cooperate. These results suggest that what may look like ethnic favoritism is, in fact, a set of reciprocity norms--stronger among coethnics than among non-coethnics--that make it possible for members of more homogeneous communities to take risks, invest, and cooperate without the fear of getting cheated. Such norms may be more subject to change than deeply held ethnic antipathies--a powerful finding for policymakers seeking to design social institutions in diverse societies. Research on ethnic diversity typically draws on either experimental research or field work. Coethnicity does both. By taking the crucial step from observation to experimentation, this study marks a major breakthrough in the study of ethnic diversity. A Volume in the Russell Sage Foundation Series on Trust. About this Item: Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: VDM Verlag Dr. Müller | The factors influencing utilisation of postnatal services in Mengo and Mulago Hospitals in Kampala Uganda | Maternal, child health and health education are major concerns of public health organisations and researchers worldwide. Health education is a strategy that many countries have adopted to improve maternal and childhealth.Over half a million women encounter complications due to childbirth annually and many even die while others develop potential life threatening complications that are long standing in nature. This is a significant figure that cannot be ignored. There is need to adress this issue to save the lives of the many mothers of the nations. WHO contends that the immediate cause of maternal deaths is absence, inadequancy and underutilisation of healthcare systems, which can be addressed. Women should not die in childbirth because majority of the complications could be prevented if they had access to, or visited maternal health services during pregnancy, childbirth and even the first month after giving birth. These complications could be eliminated through preventive maternal healthcare services such as physiotherapy, family planning, health education, and screening. The author identifies a collective need to protect the mothers. | Format: Paperback | Language/Sprache: english | 104 pp. Seller Inventory # K9783639340457

About this Item: Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: VDM Verlag Dr. Müller | Experience, Application and Adoption of Participatory Monitoring and Evaluation | HIV/AIDS which has been a pandemic in the last two and half decades has claimed many lives. It has left many widows, widowers and orphaned children. These are further complicated by the fact that AIDS has neither preventive vaccine nor curative medicine. This study set out to examine the experience, application and adoption of participatory monitoring and evaluation (PM&E) by The AIDS Support Organization (TASO) Mulago branch in Kampala. About this Item: Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing | Comparison of response among HIV infected and un-infected infants attending Mulago Hospital Kampala | Invasive disease due to Haemophilus influenzae typeb (Hib) is common in both HIV infected and un-infected children and immunisation with Hib conjugate vaccines is recommended. However, a few studies done showed that HIV infection blunts antibody response to childhood vaccines. The main objective of this study was to assess the ability of both HIV infected and un-infected Ugandan infants seen at Mulago hospital to mount protective antibody responses and highlight some of the factors that affect response. 159 infants were recruited; 8 were lost to follow up. Of the 151 analyzed, 53 were HIV infected and 98 un-infected. The serum antibody responses were determined by ELISA just before the 3rd dose and a minimum of one month after the dose. 81.6% of the HIV un-infected and 56.6% of the HIV infected achieved protective antibodies after the 3rd dose. 3 doses were better than 2 for both groups. Independent predictors for inadequate antibody response were HIV infection and splenomegally in an HIV infected infant Vitamin A had a potentiating effect on response in infants above 6 months. The study results formed a basis for evaluating the efficacy of the Hib conjugate vaccine in the country. | Format: Paperback | Language/Sprache: english | 96 pp. Seller Inventory # K9783659112225

About this Item: Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing | Diagnosis of Tuberculous pleural effusion among adult patients in Mulago Hospital | Tuberculous pleural effusion is a common cause of patient admission in Mulago hospital especially among patients infected with HIV.Histology and pleural tissue culture for MTB, the gold standard involves an invasive procedure which requires specific skills and is time consuming. We tested the diagnostic accuracy of Cepheid's MTB-specific Gene Xpert, a PCR based real time test using pleural fluid with the aim of trying to get a quicker, more user friendly, accurate and less invasive method in the diagnosis of pleural TB in our setting. This test has been proven to improve diagnose of pulmonary TB with accuracy and in less than 2 hours. Varying levels of accuracy of this test in the diagnosis of pleural TB diagnosis have been reported from small pilot studies. A South African study by Sven et al 2011 however demonstrated a sensitivity of 25% and specificity of 100% on 20 samples of confirmed pleural TB patients. Objectives: To determine the accuracy of TB-specific Gene Xpert test in the diagnosis of TB pleura among adult patients with suspected tuberculous pleural effusions attending Mulago Hospital Pulmonology Service over the study period. | Format: Paperback | Language/Sprache: english | 92 pp. Seller Inventory # K9783659683404

About this Item: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing, 2014. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.This book is the subject of a study that sought to determine the prevalence and precipitating factors of breakthrough seizures in adults with epilepsy attending Mulago hospital. The study of 256 patients found prevalence of breakthrough seizures among epilepsy patients to be 75.3 . Breakthrough seizures were significantly associated with non-compliance (p.
