From the dust jacket: "'If you are reading this, then I am gone and this manuscript, per my instruction, has been delivered to the writer Chelsea Cain for publication as she sees fit.' America's favorite girl detective [Nancy Drew] is back to set the record straight. According to our titian-haired heroine, she was not a fictional character, but an intrepid real-life sleuth who investigated some of the twentieth century's biggest mysteries. And the famous series she starred in was not cooked up by a team of writers, but plagiarized from her exploits by a nosy college roommate - who, not surprisingly, got a whole lot wrong. Here are the daring escapes, brilliant hunches, and dependable stock characters, including interlopers from numerous other beloved series, that have delighted generations of fans. And here, also, are the details of teen-sleuth life that you never saw: the secret romances, reckless driving, minor drinking problems, political action, and domestic drama that have, up till now, remained hidden from these brave detectives' adoring public.". INSCRIBED / SIGNED by the AUTHOR. First Printing of the First Edition. Hardcover. Fine condition/Near Fine dust jacket. Illus. by Miternique, Lia (drawings by). 8vo. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. If Martin Chuzzlewit (1843-1844) is, as Steven Marcus has claimed, the first novel of Dickens' maturity, it is also true, as Robert E. Lougy has observed, that it is a novel to which readers and critics do not quite know how to respond. By examining the overlapping contexts within which Dickens composed this work, The Companion to ^UMartin Chuzzlewit makes original contributions to our understanding of the novel and its complex reception. The notes revise and expand the conventional wisdom regarding the sources for the American chapters, demonstrating that Dickens drew on a much wider field of writings about America than we have traditionally acknowledged. A more complete context provides insight into Dickens' composing process, allows us to read more accurately the ideological ground on which he constructed his view of America, and sheds light in the plot anomalies surrounding young Martin's emigration.By reading Martin Chuzzlewit in the light of contemporary professional journals, the notes expose in a more finely nuanced way the contemporary issues that underlay Dickens' portrayal of Pecksniff, young Martin, and the architectural scene. They show Dickens working within a set of concerns and controversies well known to his audience. Finally, the notes point to previously unidentified influences on the plot and characters of Martin Chuzzlewit and to the impact of Dickens' thinking on a wide range of texts, from the Bridgewater Treaties to the Bible, from popular songs and newspaper advertisements to medical treatises and parliamentary reports. An invaluable research and reference tool for Dickens scholars, students, and readers alike. The most comprehensive annotation of Dickens' Martin Chuzzlewit ever undertaken. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Trade paperbacks. A complete set of the first 34 Trixie Belden books in the format used for the largest number of titles - the beige trade paperbacks with oval cover illustrations mostly by Paul Frame. While not nearly as well-known as the Nancy Drew series, the Trixie Belden mystery series probably has even more devoted and passionate readers. This tousle-haired tomboy, who would rather wear jeans than anything else, who had chores to do and a younger brother to babysit, still managed to have lots of adventures - even if she sometimes got scolded for staying out too long. Overall, each book is in very good to near fine condition - all are clean, tight copies, with the usual light toning to the pages, some have minor wear to the covers.

THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST HIGHLY-PRIZED & MOST BEAUTIFUL EDITIONS OF THIS MONUMENTAL CLASSICS YOU CAN FIND. PINEAPPLE NOT INCLUDED ABOUT THE SET: Tom Swift is the eponymous hero in the 38 volume Tom Swift series published by Grosset & Dunlap from 1910 to 1935 and two Whitman Better Little Books published 1938 to 1941. The stories are basically adventure tales with Tom's latest invention being heavily involved in the plot. In the original series, Tom Swift lives in fictional Shopton, New York. He is the son of Barton Swift, the founder of the Swift Construction Company. Tom's mother is deceased, but the housekeeper, Mrs. Baggert, functions as a surrogate mother. Tom usually shares his adventures with close friend Ned Newton, who eventually becomes the Swift Construction Company's financial manager. For most of the series, Tom dates Mary Nestor and eventually they wed (in House on Wheels). Regularly appearing characters include Wakefield Damon, an older man, whose dialogue is characterized by frequent use of such whimsical expressions as "Bless my brakeshoes!" and "Bless my vest buttons!" and, in the first fifteen stories, Tom's nemesis, Andy Foger. The original Tom Swift has been claimed to represent the early 20th-century conception of inventors. Tom has no formal education after high school; according to critic Robert Von der Osten, Tom's ability to invent is presented as "somehow innate". Tom is not a theorist but a tinkerer and, later, an experimenter who, with his research team, finds practical applications for others' research; Tom does not so much methodically develop and perfect inventions as find them by trial and error. Tom's inventions are not at first innovative. In the first two books of the series, he fixes a motorcycle and a boat, and in the third book he develops an airship, but only with the help of a balloonist. Tom is also at times unsure of himself, asking his elders for help; as Von der Osten puts it, "the early Tom Swift is more dependent on his father and other adults at first and is much more hesitant in his actions. When his airship bangs into a tower, Tom is uncharacteristically nonplussed and needs support." However, as the series progresses, Tom's inventions "show an increasingly independent genius as he develops devices, such as an electric rifle and a photo telephone, further removed from the scientific norm". Some of Tom's inventions are improvements of then-current technologies, while other inventions were not in development at the time the books were published, but have since been developed. Magazine / Periodical First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A complete set of the avant-garde periodical Assembling. Instead of selecting from submissions presented to it, Richard Kostelanetz (and, at various times, Henry James Korn, Mike Metz, Scott Helmes, and David Cole) invited potential contributors to submit a thousand copies of whatever they wanted to include, which were then alphabetically assembled into 8.5 by 11 inch books. Published by Ghilbmessa Inc. (First number) and then by Assembling Press, New York between 1970-1981. Edition of 1000. Overall excellent, well-preserved copies with minor edge-wear and age-toning, some mildly bumped corners, oversized pages in some issues creased at fore-edges. Very Good or better with no major flaws, no internal markings - all in custom protective mylar. Notably - front panel of Issue 1, which is printed on lighter paper than subsequent issues, has small closed tears at the staples - loosely attached thus. Issue 4 has a closed, diagonal tear with creasing at the spine near bottom edge - not affecting binding. Please inquire for further, thorough descriptions of condition of individual issues. Issue 1 (1970) features mixed-media contributions from Edward Ruscha (Chocolate smear by the artist), Dan Graham, Bernadette Mayer, Vito Acconci, Madeline Gins, Arakawa, Hannah Weiner, Robert Lax et al. Second Assembling (1971) features the work of Jochen Gerz, Davi Det Hompson, Clemente Padin, Alan Sondheim and Nicholas Zurbrugg et al. Third Assembling (1972), which was collated and bound by an anonymous fireman and his family, includes contributions from artists such as John Baldessari, John Furnival, Roni Hoffman, Elizabet Ginsberg, Ruth Krauss and Joseph Phillips. Fourth Assembling (1973) contains work by: Jean-Jacques Cory, Wally Depew, Dick Higgins, Nancy Henderson, Mad Dog et al. Fifth Assembling (1975) features artistic contributions by Eric Anderson, Bruce Andrews, Scott Hyde, Shoichi Kiyokawa, Thomas Macauley, Jonathan Price and Karl Young among many others. Sixth Assembling features works by Bob Aab, Anna Banana, A.F. Caldiero, Robin Crozier, Veronica Drew, Bill Gaglione & Tim Mancusi, Joe Johnson etc. Seventh Assembling features contributions by, among others, Rene Aeberhard, Bruce Andrews and Eduardo Ballerini. Eighth Assembling (1978) was split into two (A-J) and (K-Z) and includes avant-garde contributions from artists such as Charlton Burgh, Charles Ewert, Michael Gibbs and Richard Grayson in the first, and Valery Oisteanu, Douglas Turnbaugh and Nancy Wolf in the second. Ninth Assembly (1979) constitutes a 'critical' anthology. Tenth Assembling features contributions by Allan Coleman, Bonnie Donohue, Rimma & Valery Gerlovin and Tom Persons. Eleventh Assembling (1981), subtitled "Pilot Proposals" includes contributions by Agnes Denes, Bern Porter and Richard Meltzer, among others.
