About this Item: Grosset & Dunlap, NY, 1930. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. RARE First Edition, First Printing, of the #1 Nancy Drew Mystery story, The Secret of the Old Clock, SIGNED by Mildred Wirt Benson, who wrote under the pseudonym of Carolyn Keene. First State FACSIMILE Dust Jacket. This is from the collection of a private collector who corresponded with Mildred Benson for many years. Signed: ?Mildred Wirt Benson, also known as Carolyn Keene? on the title page. All first edition, first printing points are present: Ads at the back list Hardy Boys #1 - 8 and Ted Scott #1 - 11, etc. (Farah's Guide 1930A-1). The dust jacket is a COPY of the original first state dust jacket. Only the outside of the dust jacket was copied; the reverse side of the dust jacket was not and therefore remains blank. The book itself is in Very Good to Very Good minus condition: some fading to the spine, edges and corners. There is a small stain on the top right corner of the front board, and light spotting under the first "The" in the tile; otherwise, the boards are clean. Some lighter staining to the text block. Spine is wrinkled. Binding is tight. Pages and end-papers are clean. Please note: at one point, the book sustained some slight water damage to the first 7 pages. There is very faint mottling to the title page as a result. Additionally, the right outside edges of those 7 pages have been slightly trimmed (1 ? 4 mm) to remove any watermark. It was tastefully done and doesn't distract from the overall presentation of the book. Pictures available upon request. Signed by Author. Seller Inventory # 33796

About this Item: [FINLEY,MARTHA]. ELSIE DINSMORE by Martha Farquharson. NY: M.W. Dodd 1867. 12mo (4 5/8 x 6 7/8"), 288p., light purple embossed cloth, gilt decorative spine, previous owner's attractive gilt and leather book plate, slight soil on 1 page, a Fine copy in a custom leather backed box. 1st edition of the first book about Elsie Dinsmore whose series eventually ran up to 28 volumes. Despite some religious overtones and suggestions about the father's impropiety, the Elsie Dinsmore series became immensely popular. It is suggested that Elsie's longevity and success inspired Edward Stratemeyer to create his long living series including Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys and many others. In selecting this title for Peter Parley to Penrod, a bibliography of the best children's books, the bibliographer Jacob Blanck notes that he had seen only 2 copies of the first edition (p.26). Today it is rare, and outstanding copies like this can't be found. Seller Inventory # 39092

About this Item: March 5, 1998., Toledo, Ohio:, 1998. Condition: Fine. First edition. On 5 3/4 x 7 1/4" notepaper with letterhead of the Editorial Department, "You write a fine letter . It amazes me that Nancy Drew remains so popular. Sincerely, Mildred W. Benson (Carolyn Keene)." Benson, the acknowledged creator of Nancy Drew, wrote 23 of the first 30 books beginning in 1930 with THE SECRET OF THE OLD CLOCK. Much like the enduring character she brought life to, she was an adventurer who, in addition to being a writer and journalist, was a pilot and amateur archaeologist. Over the course of her career Benson wrote 112 additional children's books and numerous short stories, and her career in journalism spanned 58 years -- first at the Toledo Times and then at the Toledo Blade, where she continued to write a column until she passed away in 2002 at the age of 96. Light creases, stray pen marks on verso, otherwise fine. Includes original mailing envelope addressed by Benson. Letters such as this one, wholly in Benson's own hand, are quite scarce. About this Item: Grosset & Dunlap, U.S., 1930. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Russell H. Tandy (illustrator). 1st Edition. Nice copy of a first edition of the first ever Nancy Drew book written, like most of the early titles in the series, by Mildred Wirt Benson, the first of many Stratemeyer Syndicate writers to use the Carolyn Keene name. All first edition points in evidence: only three titles listed on copyright page, title lettering on front board outlined in black, no silhouette illustration, plain white endpapers, frontispiece and three other full page illustrations printed on glossy paper. The arrangement of the publisher's ads at the rear of the book reveal this to be the second issue: Farah 1930B-2. Spine a little faded, the blue boards are mildly marked, edges slightly browned with just a few margins showing some unobtrusive brown spots. There's a name and date on front endpaper. A very good, tidy copy of this scarce item. JS. Seller Inventory # 001024

About this Item: Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1932. Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition; First Printing. frontis & 3 plates (glossy); Small 8vo 7" - 8" tall; 202 pages; The uncommon true 1st edition and printing of the 7th title in the Nancy Drew series. Bound in original light blue cloth with title lettering to spine in blue and to cover in blue outlined yellow type. Plain cream colored endpages. Farah 1932 A-1. The last of the books to be published in the original binding format and only in the 1st printing of this title. Illustrated by Russell Tandy with a frontis and three plates on glossy stock. Title list at front and rear of book both end with #7 "Diary". This copy is a bit tired, shaken in the spine and with a split in the front endpage along the inner hinge with crash exposed but holding. Cloath at spine sunned and lightly to moderately faded but with titles still showing bold. Corners lightly bumped and slightly rubbed through. Trace fray and thinning to cloth at spine ends. Three distinct prior owner names in pencil and pen to front endpage, two of which have been crossed out. Contents generally clean and neat, though with the infrequent instance of superficial fingering soil and the expected general light toning to the page stock. A small pencil eraser sized dent in the front board and small rectangular shadow from an old placement of masking tape to a blank are of the cover board. This title is elusive in the true 1st printing, here offered in a worn but generally sound example - a filler or holding copy. Good only. Seller Inventory # 30961

About this Item: Grosset & Dunlap, New York, 1939. Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good +. Russell H. Tandy (illustrator). A handsome copy of the January 1939 correct 1st edition ("Farah's Guide", 1939 A-1, pg. 280). Bibliographically very tricky but all issue points conform to the 1st edition requirements as laid down in "Farah's Guide", the definitive Nancy Drew bibliography, which is all-but-essential for determining the wide range of different printings. Tight and Near Fine (with just a touch of light spotting at the fore-edge) in a crisp, price-intact, VG+ to Near Fine dustjacket, with several very small closed tears along the panel edges and the slightest bit of faint chipping at the spine crown. Thick 12mo, 214 pgs., the wonderful dustjacket art by Russell Tandy. Well-preserved and very presentable -- and increasingly uncommon in its original printing. The 16th title in the series.
