(London), 5 x 7 inches tall light brown cloth hardbound in publisher's unclipped dust jacket, gilt decoration to front cover and gilt lettering to spine, brown top page edges, viii, 292 pp. Cocked spine. Minor staining, rubbing and edgewear to covers, with bumping to the lower tip of the front cover. Minor foxing to the front and rear prelims. Nicely signed by the author on the blank front free-endpaper, and inscribed to 'Beren van Slyke,' the pen name of poet Berenice Heaton (1889 - 1977), wife of well-known Valley Cottage, New York glass artist Maurice Heaton (1900 - 1990). Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - in a somewhat chipped and edgeworn dust jacket which is nicely preserved and displayed in a clear archival sleeve. ~FFF~ Enid Algerine Bagnold, Lady Jones, CBE (1889 - 1981) was a British author and playwright, known for the 1935 story National Velvet. She was born in England and brought up mostly in Jamaica. She went to art school in London, and then worked for Irish editor, novelist, short story writer, journalist and publisher Frank Harris (1855 - 1931), who became her lover. During the First World War she became a nurse, writing critically of the hospital administration and being dismissed as a result. After that she was a driver in France for the remainder of the war years. She wrote about her hospital experiences in A Diary Without Dates, and about her experiences as a driver in the work offered for sale here, The Happy Foreigner. Copy 63 of 400 bound in full Laura Ashley patterened cloth over boards, paper title-label to the backstrip and oval photographic reproduction of the author tipped-on to the front, with a Whittington Press postcard laid-in, in a slipcase of brown paper-covered boards. A selection of Enid Bagnold's letters to Frank Harris, spanning the period 1915-18 subsequent to their affair. Enid Bagnold (1889-1981) is best-known for the novel 'National Velvet' (1935) and was also the great-grandmother of Samantha Cameron. John Randle found the originals by chance during a visit to Bagnold's home, and to his surprise she allowed publication. Not all copies bear the oval photograph on the front board, as 'some booksellers objected to it on aesthetic grounds' (The Whittington Pres: a Bibliography 1971-1981). Fine, in a Fine slipcase. Enid Algerine Bagnold, Lady Jones (1889 - 1981) who was always known by her maiden name, was a British author and playwright, best known for the 1935 story 'National Velvet' which was made into a film in 1944 starring Elizabeth Taylor. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper and warmly inscribed to Canadian actress Frances Hyland: "To Frances Hyland "Gertie" : With deep thanks and hopes to a future life for Gertie- from the Author Enid Bagnold Nov 10 1953." Frances Hyland (1927-2004) was a notable Canadian stage, film and television actress. Early in her career, she starred in the London production of Enid Bagnold's play "Little Idiot" on Nov 10, 1953. (This play was produced as "Gertie" in New York in 1952). The author inscribed this work on the same night as the production. Light surface wear to the original black covers with a hint of bumping to spine extremities. Errata slip clumsily glued by the publisher on the verso of the half title. Dust jacket has darkened with edgewear. Front panel has detached along hinge. Dust jacket is in a protective cover. British author Enid Bagnold (1889-1981) wrote over twenty works of fiction, poetry, autobiography including the children's book 'National Velvet' for which she is best known.
