About this Item: Five Oaks Press, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Boudreaux has a dazzling capacity for sudden imagistic insights: like plucking a camellia from a neighbor s tree, turned paradise by twilight, a sultan with a taped wood fungo bat, a shot of bourbon/hush of evening. These poems follow in the sidestroke of the wild poet Stevie Smith ( Not Waving but Drowning ), yet are also soothed and entertained by angels -- a path opened by a quoted scriptural passage. Gold New Orleans jazz lifts as high as friends high on a suspension bridge and accompanies earthy celebrations, like pulling gold bracelets/from their well about a meal of softshell crabs. A book of flowers, blue gardenia and blossoming magnolia, a book of newborn bliss and compassion -- this book is a bright braid to bring beauty down from its lonely tower. --Carol Muske-Dukes A stylistic heir to the tradition of H.D. and William Carlos Williams, Boudreaux s language is spare but evocative. Among the recurring features that characterize his poems, two stand out. The most immediately noticeable device is his use of line endings to deliberately create syntactical ambiguities ( a part wants out of this/entire seduction, the knock-knock bar/where you could toke/up conversation ). Then we encounter his astonishing metaphors. Because of the understated language leading to them, they take you by surprise. The sound of his maid s bare feet on the wood floor becomes a faint slapping of distant waves. In a beautifully erotic image, my wife s hand/on the avocado skin, the seed purple, hard as a rope s knot. These are two of the many facets that recommend Beau Boudreaux s poetry. --John Freeman In Rapunzel s Braid, Beau Boudreaux takes us through the thunder afternoons of southern desire all the way to the mornings of fatherhood. The lens is devotion to love and sensory detail, I can t determine beauty / strands everywhere, and the place is always New Orleans, even when we hear echoes of time in other locales. There s a formal delicacy in the couplet, the main device for these poems as they balance encounter with response. The poems go from fishing to champagne, from baseball to friendship, from love letters to the delight of a newborn son, always tendering us more chalk / for the experience. Boudreaux can make us taste reflection s mood. --Lisa Samuels. Seller Inventory # APC9781944355203

About this Item: Samuel French Ltd, United Kingdom, 2015. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Smith commutes to the West End to her work as a secretary at a publishing company. Her evenings are spent at home with her beloved aunt - a world of battenberg cake, gossip, ginger nuts and sherry in tiny glasses. But at the same time as leading this seemingly mundane suburban existence, she is writing the piercing poetry and prose that will one day make her famous. Stevie is a biographical snapshot of both the poet and the private woman. Shot through with wit, this is the story of an endearing heroine, her unconventional life, powerful and popular poetry and her greatest struggle: to keep waving and not drowning. About this Item: Faber & Faber, 2015. Gebundene Ausgabe. Condition: Gebraucht. Gebraucht - Sehr gut Leichte Lagerspuren - When Stevie Smith died in 1971 she was one of the twentieth-century's most popular poets; many of her poems have been widely anthologised, and 'Not Waving but Drowning' remains one of the nation's favourite poems to this day. Satirical, mischievous, teasing, disarming, her characteristically lightning-fast changes in tone take readers from comedy to tragedy and back again, while her line drawings are by turns unsettling and beguiling. In this wholly new edition of her work, Smith scholar Will May collects together the illustrations and poems from her original published volumes for the first time, recording fascinating details about their provenance, and describing the various versions Smith presented both on stage and page. Including over 500 works from Smith's 35-year career, The Collected Poems and Drawings of Stevie Smith is the essential edition of modern poetry's most distinctive voice. Nobody heard him, the dead man, But still he lay moaning: I was much further out than you thought And not waving but drowning. - 'Not Waving but Drowning' 848 pp. Englisch. Final charges may vary depending on size and weight. British poet Stevie Smith became a national treasure in her own lifetime, but was it for all the wrong reasons? Born in 1902, she is famous for the title poem of her 1957 collection "Not Waving But Drowning". She also published seven other collections of poetry as well as three novels, beginning with her debut, "Novel on Yellow Paper", in 1936. Despite a career dip in the 1950s she was taken up by a new generation of readers in the 1960s and died, in 1971, celebrated and beloved. Despite her success, she is often represented as a quirky curiosity rather than an object of intellectual admiration. There is the lifelong spinsterhood; the suburban London home where she resided from childhood to death; the fact that she was brought up with her sister, mother and two aunts and lived on with one aunt until the end; her thirty years' service as a company secretary, a job far beneath her talents; even her appearance, which made her look part-nun, part-child. The irony, variety and erudition of her poetry is often overlooked in favour of patronising praise for its (and her) apparent simplicity. Seller Inventory # 91546
