Paperback. Condition: OKAZ. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 280 pages. A delightful parody of The Book of Virtues frolics through the seven deadly sins with humorous, surprising passages from the most entertaining classics of the ages, from Aphra Benn 's The Willing Mistress to Virgil's The Salad. Editorial Reviews From Publishers Weekly Hutchinson, a former Hawaii bureau chief for the Hollywood Reporter and a self-anointed connoisseur of vi ce, offers this delightful little send-up of William J. Bennett's The Book of Virtues. Skipping merrily through a forbidden catech ism of the Seven Deadly Sins?Lust, Avarice, Sloth, Gluttony, Prid e, Envy and Anger?this captivating array of verse and prose moves from pre-Christian Greeks and Romans down through the Renaissanc e in France and England and on into the moderns. Represented are pearls from Greek historian Xenophon (c.430-354 B.C.), Dickens, M ark Twain, Woody Allen, Shakespeare, Rabelais, Flaubert, Tom Wolf e, Groucho Marx, e.e. cummings and Oscar Wilde, to mention a few. Lust is given top billing and afforded almost a third more pages than each of its six less intriguing sisters. Beginning with an erotic selection from Boccaccio's Decameron and ending with a zip less fantasy from Erica Jong's Fear of Flying, the anthology is a standard reference for those with the urge to brush up on the fi ner points of sin. Illustrations. BOMC and QPB selections. Copyr ight 1995 Reed Business Information, Inc. From Booklist Pretty o bviously cocking a snook at William Bennett's surprise best-selle r, The Book of Virtues (1993), editor Hutchinson says of his own compilation, Unlike in books purporting to teach morality, you wi ll actually want to read the stories in this book. Well, you migh t first want to send Hutchinson to remedial writing classes to he lp him overcome tortured locutions like that one, but he's right, this vicious stuff, both prose and verse, is highly readable. It includes excerpts from Dickens, Flaubert, Austen, Virgil, Rabela is, Xenophon, Dostoyevsky, etc., among classic authors, and Woody Allen, Dan Jenkins, and John Kennedy O'Toole among contemporary writers; and it is sorted into seven chapters named after the sev en deadly sins. Nothing in it, however, will corrupt anyone, nor raise a single eyebrow. Ray Olson About the Author Robert J. Hut chinson is an award-winning writer and author who studied philoso phy as an undergraduate, moved to Israel to learn Hebrew, and ear ned a graduate degree in New Testament. The former managing edito r of Hawaii Magazine, he has written travel, science and politica l articles for a wide variety of publications in both North Ameri ca and in Europe. Hutchinson's most recent book is The Dawn of Ch ristianity: How God Used Simple Fishermen, Soldiers and Prostitut es to Transform the World (Thomas Nelson, 2017), a journalistic r etelling of the first 20 years of the Jesus movement that draws u pon recent discoveries in archaeology and New Testament studies. He lives with his wife and five children in a small seaside town in the United States.
