About this Item: Goodspeed Publishing Co., Chicago Illinois. Spiral/Comb. Condition: New. No Jacket. Limited Edition Reprint. Early days in St. Francois County, MO, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this booklet, reprinted from excerpts from three rare books: Goodspeed's 1888: History of Southeast Missouri, The State of Missouri (1904), and Missouri, a Guide to the "Show Me" State, a 1930s WPA project. The 64-page spiral bound 8 1/2 x 11" booklet, is photocopied on 60# paper. A vinyl sheet protects the front cover. The 1888 history covers the early development of this area and includes bios of prominent citizens. The 1904 book, written in connection with the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, gives an overview of the county at that date. The WPA excerpts take a look at the area from a 1939 vantage point, including interesting historical notes, especially as they relate to sightseeing possibilities. Topics covered include: Mining and mineral resources -- Mine a la Platte or the Doggett Mine, Valle Mines, Chadburn Mine, and others; Fires; Granite quarries; Iron Mountain and Pilot Knob; Formation of the county and names of early officials; Courts and trials; Lawyers; Farmington -- businesses, newspapers, schools, lodges; Other towns -- Bonne Terre, Bismarck, etc., and other bits of history and trivia. Besides the names mentioned in the first part of the booklet, there are biographies of many county residents of yesteryear. Most are fairly lengthy, and often include ancestors, previous residences, children, in-laws, affiliations, war records, and business activities. In the course of this they often shed light on the early businesses, professions and institutions in the county. The biographies include: James A. Abernathy, Lawson Alexander, John C. About this Item: MIT Press Ltd, United States, 2001. Paperback. Condition: New. New.. Language: English . Brand New Book. This long-awaited two-volume book examines how the interplay of ideas and actions applied to environmental problems has laid the foundations for global environmental management. It looks at how ideas, interests, and institutions affect management practice; how management capabilities in other areas affect the ability to deal with specific environmental issues; and how learning affects society s approach to the global environment. The book focuses on efforts to deal with climate change, ozone depletion, and acid rain from 1957 (The International Geophysical Year) through 1992 (the UN Conference on Environment and Development). The settings include Canada, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, the former Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, the United States, and international environmental organizations. Topics include problem framing, agenda setting, issue attention, risk assessment, monitoring, option assessment, goal and strategy formulation, implementation, and evaluation. Volume 1 provides an overview of the project, of global environmental management in general, and of the three central environmental issues studied; it also contains the individual country studies. Volume 2 contains the management function studies and the book s conclusion.Authors in the set includeJeannine Cavender-Bares, William C. Clark, Ellis Cowling, Nancy M. About this Item: Spiral/Comb. Condition: New. No Jacket. Limited Edition Reprint. An overview of the early days of Boyle County, Kentucky, and biographies of some of the county's prominent residents from the late 1800s, are combined with a brief history of the state in this new 73-page book. The spiral-bound book includes biographies from the 1880's book, Kentucky: A History of the State by J.H. Battle, W.H. Perrin and G.C. Kniffin, excerpts from Kentucky, a Guide to the Bluegrass State, a 1939 product of the WPA Writer's Program, and information from various internet sources.
