About this Item: Createspace, United States, 2013. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Pascal s Pensees The Misery of Man without God By Blaise Pascal BRAND NEW COPY Introduction By T. S. Eliot The Pensees (literally, thoughts ) represented a defense of the Christian religion by Blaise Pascal, the renowned 17th century philosopher and mathematician. Pascal s religious conversion led him into a life of asceticism, and the Pensees was in many ways his life s work. The concept (but not the term) Pascal s Wager stems from a portion of this work. The Pensees is in fact a name given posthumously to his fragments, which he had been preparing for an Apology for the Christian Religion and which was never completed. It might seem that about Blaise Pascal, and about the two works on which his fame is founded, everything that there is to say had been said. The details of his life are as fully known as we can expect to know them; his mathematical and physical discoveries have been treated many times; his religious sentiment and his theological views have been discussed again and again; and his prose style has been analysed by French critics down to the finest particular. But Pascal is one of those writers who will be and who must be studied afresh by men in every generation. It is not he who changes, but we who change. It is not our knowledge of him that increases, but our world that alters and our attitudes towards it. The history of human opinions of Pascal and of men of his stature is a part of the history of humanity. That indicates his permanent importance. The facts of Pascal s life, so far as they are necessary for this brief introduction to the Pensees, are as follows. He was born at Clermont, in Auvergne, in 1623. His family were people of substance of the upper middle class. His father was a government official, who was able to leave, when he died, a sufficient patrimony to his one son and his two daughters. In 1631 the father moved to Paris, and a few years later took up another government post at Rouen. Wherever he lived, the elder Pascal seems to have mingled with some of the best society, and with men of eminence in science and the arts. Blaise was educated entirely by his father at home. He was exceedingly precocious, indeed excessively precocious, for his application to studies in childhood and adolescence impaired his health, and is held responsible for his death at thirty-nine. Prodigious, though not incredible stories are preserved, especially of his precocity in mathematics. His mind was active rather than accumulative; he showed from his earliest years that disposition to find things out for himself, which has characterised the infancy[Pg viii] of Clerk-Maxwell and other scientists. Of his later discoveries in physics there is no need for mention here; it must only be remembered that he counts as one of the greatest physicists and mathematicians of all time; and that his discoveries were made during the years when most scientists are still apprentices. SYNOPSIS: PARADISE LOST Just a few islands in a planetwide ocean, Thalassa was a veritable paradise - home to one of the small colonies founded centuries before by robot Mother Ships when the Sun had gone nova and mankind had fled Earth. Mesmerized by the beauty of Thalassa and overwhelmed by its vast resources, the colonists lived an idyllic existence, unaware of the monumental evolutionary event slowly taking place beneath their seas . . . Then the Magellan arrived in orbit carrying one million refugees from the last, mad days on Earth. And suddenly uncertainty and change had come to the placid paradise that was Thalassa. Arthur C. Clarke was born at Minehead, Somerset, England, in 1917 and is a graduate of King's College, London, where he obtained First Class Honors in Physics and Mathematics. He is past Chairman of the British Interplanetary Society, a member of the Academy of Astronautics, the Royal Astronomical Society, and many other scientific organizations. During World War II, as an RAF officer, he was in charge of the first radar talk-down equipment during its experimental trials. His only non-science-fiction novel, Glide Path, is based on this work. Author of fifty books, some twenty million-plus copies of which have been printed in over thirty languages, his numerous awards include the 1961 Kalinga Prize, the AAAS-Westinghouse science-writing prize, the Bradford Washburn Award, and the Hugo, Nebula, and John W. Campbell Awards - all three of which were won by his novel Rendezvous with Rama. In 1968 he shared an Oscar nomination with Stanley Kubrick for 2001: A Space Odyssey, and his thirteen-part TV series Arthur C. Clarke's Mysterious World has now been screened in many countries. He joined Walter Cronkite during CBS' coverage of the Apollo missions. His invention of the communications satellite in 1945 has brought him numerous honors, such as the 1982 Marconi International Fellowship, a gold medal of the Franklin Institute, the Vikram Sarabhai Professorship of the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, and a Fellowship of King's College, London. The President of Sri Lanka recently nominated him Chancellor of the University of Moratuwa, near Colombo. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 003072

This bequest became available to the University in 1906. The extract from the will referring to the foundation is as follows As soon as the interest accruing thereon shall by said Trustees be deemed sufficient they shall employ some able Scientific Gentle man to deliver before the students then in at tendance at said University, a course of lectures, the object of which lectures shall be to show the mutual bearing of science and theology upon each other, and to prove the existence and at tributes, as far as may be, of God from nature. The lectures, which must be performed by a member of some one of the Evangelic denomina tions of Christians, must be published within twelve months after delivery, either in pam phlet or boof form. PREFACE following pages represent the au-A thors attempt to give in very brief form some of the most significant changes in fundamental concepts which have re sulted from the extraordinary advances made in recent years in the field of experimental physics. These changes obviously have im portant bearings not only on physics but on the whole outlook of mankind toward na ture, and hence toward life. They show that the great blunder which the physics of the past has made has consisted in extending its generalizations with undue assurance into fields in which they have not been experi mentally tested, that is, in treating these generalizations as fixed, universally ap plicable principles instead of as essentially working hypotheses. This has led in the past to a dogmatism in science which is at bottom indistinguishable from dogmatism in vii PREFACE theology or in any other field for dog matism in any field is merely assertiveness without knowledge. But the physicist has recently, through his blunders and his new experimental findings, learned a lesson of open-mindedness which cannot fail to in fluence other fields of thought. Philosophy and theology, as well as biology and psy chology, are sure to profit from it. viii TABLE OF CONTENTS PAGE PREFACE vii I. NEW IDEAS ABOUT TIME 3 II. NEW IDEAS ABOUT MATTER 32 III. About this Item: Notion Press, Inc., United States, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. The book intended exclusively for the usage of students, teachers and persons who are related to competitive exams. The book is based on our experience over the past 8 years and design on the basis of current competitive level of Engineering like IIT JEE mains/ Advanced, MHT-CET, BITSAT + NTSE, KVPY, Olympiad, IIT Foundation + CAT and other state engineering exams in India, where 1194938 i.e. around 12 Lakh of students (Year 2016) write a single engineering exam. As an educator, I understand the student s need of these topics and the difficulties faces by students in transition from standard 10th to 11th class. As students enter their 11th standard, they find a substantial change in the course content and level of difficulty. The book is prepared to serve as a bridge for 10th to 11th standards, CAT aspirants etc. Software engineers can also be in benefit in writing the code due to concepts clarity. The book contains the following Learning Methodology. (i) Basic concepts and easy learning. (ii) Necessary examples and experiments for beginners level to expert. (iii) Psychology of student s brain and their thinking. (iv) Pictorial view of problems and solutions. (v) Challenging problems (Ultimate Finish - for Top All India Rankers between 1 - 500). It is for this reason that all mathematical proofs have been thrown into appendixes. If, in spite of this, the general student finds certain chapters, such as vii and viii, unintelligible, it is hoped that Without them he may yet gain some idea of certain phases at least of the. PREFACE: THE idea of expanding an arbitrary function in terms of the solutions of a second-order differential equation goes back to the time of Sturm and Liouville, more than a hundred years ago. The first satisfactory proofs were constructed by various authors early in the twentieth century. Later, a general theory of the singular cases was given by Weyl, who-based i on the theory of integral equations. An alternative method, proceeding via the general theory of linear operators in Hilbert space, is to be found in the treatise by Stone on this subject. Here I have adopted still another method. Proofs of these expansions by means of contour integration and the calculus of residues were given by Cauchy, and this method has been used by several authors in the ordinary Sturm-Liouville case. It is applied here to the general singular case. It is thus possible to avoid both the theory of integral equations and the general theory of linear operators, though of course we are sometimes doing no more than adapt the latter theory to the particular case considered. The ordinary Sturm-Liouville expansion is now well known. I therefore dismiss it as rapidly as possible, and concentrate on the singular cases, a class which seems to include all the most interesting examples. In order to present a clear-cut theory in a reasonable space, I have had to reject firmly all generalizations. Many of the arguments used extend quite easily to other cases, such as that of two simultaneous first-order equations. It seems that physicists are interested in some aspects of these questions. If any physicist finds here anything that he wishes to know, I shall indeed be delighted but it is to mathematicians that the book is addressed. I believe in the future of mathematics for physicists, but it seems desirable that a writer on this subject should understand physics as well as mathematics. E. C. T. Contents include: I.
