About this Item: Tokyo, 1945. Coloured poster showing a woman fanning the mosquitoes away from her sleeping baby. Burning mosquito coils are visible in small pit near the concerned mother. 44 x 57.5cm. Light creasing where poster has been folded, otherwise very good. This poster advertises a mosquito repellent incense named Seburik? The text accompanying the title translates as "Mosquito repellent of Sanka (Driving mountain monsters away)"; "Elegant smoke"; "Sanitation for this summer", and "Mosquito and insect proof". The Sanka people are a people who are often equated with gypsies in European society. The Sanka people of Japan live and travel within the mountains. It appears from this poster that "Driving mountain monsters away" seems to be the name of the mosquito repellent made by the Sanka. The mosquito repellent advertised here, Seburik?, was produced by Misumi Hiroshi ??? at the Mikuni Yakus? Kenky?sho ??????? [Mikuni Institute of Medicinal Plants Research]. Misumi Hiroshi (1903-71) was a very "colourful character". He started his career as an Asahi Shiinbun journalist in 1926, mainly working as a crime reporter. While working on a robbery case, he heard a detective say "The culprit ran fast; he might be Sanka", which was the catalyst for his interest in this mysterious mountain people. Following his career as a journalist Misumi Hiroshi became the popular author of a series of novels with Sanka as main characters. In 1942 he founded Mikuni Yakus? Kenky?sho [Mikuni Institute of Medicinal Plants Research] and became a director. During the war he sold medicinal plants he claimed to be used by Sanka to the Imperial Japanese Army. At the time the Japanese army were fighting in the Pacific and prevention of malaria was a crucial issue for their operations. After the war Misumi Hiroshi ran cinemas and gained a PhD in literature in 1962 for his research on the Sanka. However, possibly in keeping with his rather "colourful character", his research has been questioned by scholars since!. Seller Inventory # 158138

About this Item: William Morrow (An Imprint of Harper Collins), New York, 2002. Hard Cover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. In this lavishly illustrated labor of love, Jerry Weist -- Sotheby's fantasy and science fiction collectibles expert and longtime Ray Bradbury friend and collector -- gives us a unique "visual biography," a one-of-a-kind celebration of the life, career, and genius of one of America's most beloved literary giants. The works of Ray Bradbury have been read and revered for more than half a century. The winner of countless awards and accolades, including a Medal for Distinguished Contribution to American Letters from the National Book Foundation, he has left a deeper, more enduring imprint on our times than most writers of his or any generation. The source of The Martian Chronicles, father of The Illustrated Man, and master brewer of Dandelion Wine, Bradbury has penned stories, novels, stage plays, and screenplays that have long demonstrated the limitlessness of the human imagination and pure power of the word. Bradbury: An Illustrated Life features magazine illustrations, movie stills and posters, comic book art, letters, scripts, book jackets, and paintings -- all expertly selected and insightfully explained -- that trace an incomparable artist's journey through the twentieth century and into the twenty-first. Here also are rare and illuminating gems from some of his renowned compatriots and collaborators, including excerpts from the journal of legendary director Fran ois Truffaut, written during the making of the motion picture version of Bradbury's classic Fahrenheit 451. From his groundbreaking involvement with EC Comics -- which would ultimately inspire generations of comic book creators and graphic novel artists -- through his many decades of literary success, as well as his award-winning work in films, theater, and television, to the present day, the world of the incomparable Ray Bradbury comes vibrantly alive in words and pictures, in photo and ink, in conceptual art and bold living color. Bradbury: An Illustrated Life belongs in the collection of anyone who has ever been moved, astounded, elated, terrified, or inspired by the tales, ideas, dreams, and magnificent visions of one of America's preeminent storytellers. About this Item: London: Christopher Helm, (2017, 2017. second edition, reprint).Octavo, paperback,425 pp.,colour illustrations, maps. Graced with bounteous natural beauty, Costa Rica has become a popular destination for travellers from all over the world. Birds play a prominent role in attracting visitors, too. The shimmering quetzals, gaudy macaws, and comical toucans that populate tourism posters only begin to hint at the impressive avian diversity to be found throughout this small country. The principle objective of this book is to help you correctly identify birds in Costa Rica. Each family of birds is introduced by a brief description that should help the novice birder determine to which group a bird belongs. Nearly every species is illustrated by one or more images, as needed. Corresponding to each species' illustration is a written account on the facing page. The account begins with the unique field marks to look for that will distinguish each species from similar ones. Following the description of unique markings is information about how common a species is and where it occurs geographically. To the left of most accounts is a thumbnail map of Costa Rica showing the species' range within the country. Many species accounts include a description of vocalization. Seller Inventory # 37429
