About this Item: 1893. Oil on canvas, laid down on wood, 22 x 30 inches. Signed and dated lower left: "Alfred Agoust / 1893," titled: "Buffalo Bill" on Kennedy Gallery labels. Superb condition, period-style gilt American exhibition frame. Provenance : Kennedy Galleries (labels); Collection of Edward Eberstadt & Sons. A very rare contemporary oil painting of an Act in Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show: almost all of the images of the Wild West show are found in the great lithographic posters and photographs produced by the William F. Cody publicity machine. Period oil paintings of the Buffalo Bill act are very rare indeed. This wonderful image, showing a comic routine Buffalo Bill evidently adopted from European circus acts, is a unique contribution to the iconography of the Wild West Show. This entertaining painting almost certainly depicts a version of the comedy pantomime routine called "The Frenchman's Bottle Gag" as performed in England by Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show. The painting shows a bewildered Buffalo Bill in the center of the canvas, apparently ready to come to blows with two cockney characters on either side of him, one of whom is swilling a drink from a flask. A prominent historian of performance tells us: "The gag, made famous in Paris by the Hanlon Brothers and their collaborator, the Agoust Family Jugglers, in the long playing three-stage acrobatics, magic, and pantomime spectacular, Le Voyage en Suisse, usually involves two clowns, a ridiculously dressed Frenchman, and his bottle. The clowns steal his bottle and surreptitiously sneak sips back-and-forth, as the bewildered Frenchman desperately attempts to figure out who's got his bottle. This image is of costers or pearlies, East End London cockneys, victimizing the Buffalo Bill character - the old Hanlon & Agoust drinking routine re-costumed for the Wild West show's British audience." Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show made two extensive tours of England and Europe prior to the date of this painting, 1887-1888, arriving for Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, and 1889-1893, playing the great theaters and fairgrounds. The 1893 tour was at the height of the show's fame. The 1893 show program correctly stated, "Since the visit of Buffalo Bill's Wild West to England and its remarkable engagement in London, at West Brompton, in 1887, a history and tour have been made, such as no organization of its magnitude and requirements ever accomplished." Henri Agoust, the Hanlon's long-time collaborator (the parties later fell out and sued each other in a bitter legal dispute), had a son named Alfred, a member of the Agoust Family Jugglers. According to a census of traveling show people, he would have been in his early twenties in 1893. His biography is otherwise unknown. It seems likely, however, that the juggling Alfred Agoust was also the well trained, talented artist responsible for this magnificent show business painting, with its attention to costume, props, and comic gesture, demonstrating the specialized knowledge of the insider. John A. McKinven The Hanlon Brothers, their amazing acrobatics, pantomimes and stage spectacles (Glenwood, Illinois: David Meyer Magic Books, 1998), passim; Buffalo Bill's Wild West and Congress of Rough Riders of the World (Chicago: Blakely Printing Company, [1893]), passim. About this Item: Boston: [by John Wilson and Son, Cambridge, for] The Yellow Hair Library, Copeland and Day, 1895, 1895. Folio (439 × 298 mm). Publisher's floral cloth-covered boards, blue morocco backstrip lettered and dated in gilt, vellum tips. Housed in a flat backed blue folding case. Duplicate endpapers at the front slightly creased, backstrip a little rubbed, unobtrusive repair to back joint, a very good copy of this exceptionally rare book. Front and back endpapers signed by Smith, Reed and Wilkins, pastedowns each with an extra original design (front, a flower; back, a butterfly) by Reed. The endpapers duplicated at the front on bright pink and green paper and at the back on yellow paper. Four titles on four sheets, each slightly different, with printer's devices printed in various colours. 15 plates each printed on six different kinds of paper. First edition, limited edition large paper copy, one of 15 copies only printed on Royal Japanese paper, containing original extra illustrations on the endpapers by Ethel Reed, in a large-paper folio format much larger than the trade issue (which was done in small quarto), with four different states of the title and the plates printed on six different kinds of paper, signed by all the participants on front and back endpapers, bound in specially imported Javanese muslin. One of the rarest of the Parley to Penrod titles, this book in its deluxe format is the masterpiece of the book artist Ethel Reed (1874–1910?), who for a brief period was the star designer of books and posters in the Boston Arts and Crafts movement. Her unfettered artistic exuberance, clearly a reflection of her youthful enthusiasm and high spirits, is extraordinarily appealing. Her style reflects Walter Crane's visual influence (Crane had made a visit to Boston in 1891–92) as well as the decadent images of Aubrey Beardsley. The limited edition is naturally rare and desirable: the last copy at auction was the Grolier Club–Epstein copy (described as "corner worn, hinges reinforced") which fetched $26,400 (Swann, Apr 30, 1992, lot 421). Before that the Bradley Martin copy made $18,400 (Sotheby's New York, Jan 30, 1990, lot 2466). "Ethel Reed was born and raised in Newburyport, Massachusetts, where she received her first training in art from Laura Coombs Hills. She later studied at the Cowles School in Boston, where Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue was one of her teachers. While a student, she began designing posters and book decorations in a distinctive Art Nouveau style, first for the Boston Herald and later for the small literary presses Copeland & Day and Lamson, Wolfe and Co. For a short period in 1895 and 1896, she was the most celebrated of the Boston book artists. Her brilliant though eccentric work may be an example of the sort of 'specious originality' which the Society of Arts and Crafts sought to discourage. She left for Europe in May 1896 and subsequently contributed a few designs to the British publisher John Lane. She died sometime before 1925, when Richard Le Gallienne, in The Romantic Nineties, recalled 'the noble silent beauty of Ethel Reed, whose early death robbed the world of a great decorative artist'" (Inspiring Reform: Boston's Arts and Crafts Movement, Davis Museum, 1997). "When William Sharp and Maurice Maeterlinck and Aubrey Beardsley see this book they will shed tears of great joy, for their art principles have been applied at last to the manufacture of literature and pictures for children" (Artists of the Book in Boston 1890–1901 p. 27). About this Item: [New York], 1901. 3 pp. pen and ink on three sheets of 105, Mount Street, W. stationery, rectos only, with original envelope. Churchill Lectures in America. On December 1, 1900, Churchill sailed for New York to begin a two month speaking tour of North America organized by Major James Pond. The young Churchill was fresh from the battlefield of four of Queen Victoria's wars, where he served a dual role as officer and war correspondent. His lecture, "The War as I Saw It," was a telling of his views on the South African War and his escape from captivity, all illustrated with magic lantern slides. Major James Burton Pond (1838-1903) was a lecture promoter who, in addition to Churchill, represented Samuel Clemens, Arthur Conan Doyle and Henry Stanley.Churchill writes to Pond on the final day of the tour, two days before he set sail for England on the day of Queen Victoria's funeral. Reading in part, "I am much obliged to you for the handsome volumes you have presented me with, and which I shall add to my small but growing library with great satisfaction ? I am of course disappointed with the small profit [£1,600] my tour has resulted in, but at the same time I do not regret my visit to these shores for I have gained a great many new ideas and learned and have learned a good deal that will be of value later on. I am sorry we had a disagreement for although I am not quite convinced that you have managed the lecture tour well, I fear I was unreasonable. However, any annoyance I may have caused you was more than balanced by the wide circulation of your unfortunate 'interview'; so that I think we may ? forget the business ?"Though this letter aims at something of a reconciliation, Churchill was deeply unhappy with Pond's handling of the tour. "Pond's advance work had left Winston so angry that he threatened to call off the tour. Posters hailed him as 'the hero of five wars,' at least one too many. A reception committee of local dignitaries featured so many Dutch names that it might have been made up of Boers ? Things were not off to a good start ? Winston fought with Pond - he was nothing but a vulgar Yankee impresario, who was taking 30 percent of the fees and subcontracting some of the lectures to local agents for a fixed guarantee" (Morgan, Churchill: Young Man in a Hurry, pp. 141-144).[With:] CHURCHILL, Winston. 1p. Typed Letter, signed ("Winston Churchill"), to Major Pond. 105, Mount Street W. [London]: August 8, 1901. Light edgewear and creases from prior folds. Churchill writes to Pond 8 months after the debacle of his American tour to offer tickets to the House of Commons. "It is very uncertain during the last few days of the Session when I shall be in the House of Commons, but I can very easily get you tickets to hear the debates if you desire them ?"[And:] With a collection of papers and notes relating to the tour and the Churchill/Pond relationship, including:6 page autograph draft of notes by Pond, describing several unpleasant anecdotes concerning Churchill's lecture tour. March 5, 1901. "Buel [Clarence Clogh Buel, editor of The Century Magazine] asked me how I ever came to bring to this country that ass of a Churchill ? 'He is the biggest idiot you have brought here yet' said Buel." The note goes on to relate Richard Le Gallienne's account of Churchill's stay with bibliophile James Young of Minneapolis and Churchill's imperious behavior towards his host.Eastern Union telegram from Churchill to Pond in Stamphix, NY, announcing his decision to lecture in North America. London, July 30, 1900. "? Have decided come lecture in America during December January February Perhaps fortnight longer ?" with address in pencil, "35a Great Cumberland Pl. London W." Split vertically with old repair.26 pp. typed carbon of notes by Pond concerning Churchill's lecture tour and their acrimonious relationship, with a few notes in Pond's hand. A fascinating and detailed account of the breakdown of the relationship between Churchill and Pond, with transcripts of let. Seller Inventory # 263185

About this Item: 1855. First Edition. ROBERTS, David. The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, & Nubia. London: Day & Son, 1855-56. Six volumes in three. Quarto, contemporary full brown blind-stamped morocco sympathetically rebacked, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $18,000.First quarto edition of this monumental early visual record of the Middle East by the first Westerner permitted to enter sacred sites, with 250 magnificent tinted lithographs.Inquisitive Western minds first glimpsed the mysteries of Egypt and the Middle East in detail through David Roberts' folio-sized Holy Land, issued in 41 parts from 1842 to 1849 and containing 250 full-page hand-colored lithographs produced from his magnificent, on-site drawings. Roberts was the first Westerner to be granted permission to enter whichever sacred mosque or monument he desired. His images of these sacred places established what many people even today envision as the aura of Egypt and the Holy Land. "Roberts' Holy Land has a world-wide reputation; nothing of a similar character has ever been produced that can bear a comparison with it" (Ran, 6). Louis Haghe, considered the foremost lithographer of his time, transferred the exquisitely detailed drawings to stone. This is the first quarto edition of 1855-56, containing all 250 lithographic plates contained in the folio edition, including a frontispiece portrait of Roberts, six pictorial title pages, and two engraved maps. Undoubtedly the most famous of these is Plate 240, the great sphinx, still commonly reproduced in poster art. A considerable number of plates are printed in two tints; plates 213 and 240 are printed in three. See Abbey Travel 385, 388; Tooley 401. Light marginal edge-wear to plates 180-82. Occasional foxing affecting versos of plates only, small and faint marginal dampstain along gutter in Volume VI, images quite clean and fine. Light expert restoration to original morocco boards. A very good set. Seller Inventory # 104448

About this Item: Leningrad: Volodarsky Printing Shop, March 20, 1965, 1965. Proof avant les lettres of a large monochrome lithographic poster (850 × 603 mm). Archivally framed. Slightly worn and creased; some browning; lower portion lightly rippled; professionally laid down. Signed and inscribed by the composer in the lower margin (in Russian): "To dear Irina Ivanovna and Georgy Nikolayevich with best thanks D. Shostakovich April 16, 1965". This striking poster, here in proof state before letters - without Shostakovich's name above the titling and the name of "I.I. Vedernikova" in the margin at top right - was produced in connection with the 1966-67 film adaptation of the revised version of Shostakovich's Lady Macbeth of the Mtensk District, titled Katerina Izmailova, which had premiered on January 8, 1963. "Shostakovich completed Lady Macbeth in December 1932, dedicating it to his new bride Nina Varzar. The work was projected as the first of a trilogy or tetralogy of operas, a cycle dealing with the fates of women from different periods of Russian history The opera was an immediate critical and, especially, popular success; its earthy approach to sex, its graphic language and extreme violence gave it powerful veristic appeal. The composer's confident mastery of the musical and dramatic idiom was indisputable. Despite minor criticisms, Lady Macbeth was widely hailed as the first major opera of the Soviet period." (Laurel Fay, Grove Music Online). Despite its success, the opera was banned by Stalin for its bleak portrayal of Soviet life and disappeared from the repertory for nearly 30 years. Shostakovich significantly revised the music during 1954-63 after Stalin's death; the work was "rehabilitated" as Katarina Izmailova receiving its first performance at the Stanislavsky Nemirovich-Danchenko Theatre in Moscow. "Although Lady Macbeth has finally and firmly established itself among the few operatic masterpieces of the 20th century, its fate as tragic victim of Soviet political repression also caused an irreparable loss for the history of opera. Still under the age of 30 and one of the most naturally gifted theatrical composers of his generation, Shostakovich abandoned his ambition to create a tetralogy of operas about women after the work's condemnation. Despite a lifelong attraction to the genre and frequent fitful starts, he never completed another opera" (ibid.). We have been unable to identify the recipients but they may have been linked to the Shevchenko Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Kiev: "Of all the productions [of Katerina Izmailova], Shostakovich found the one at the Shevchenko the most satisfying musically, and thus it was the forces from this theatre, under the baton of Konstantin Simeonov, who were recruited to record the soundtrack for the film version (directed by Mikhail Shapiro for Lemfilm) in 1965 Shostakovich himself prepared the scenario and supervised the taping and editing of the film, which was released in 1967" (Laurel E. Fay, Shostakovich: A Life, OUP 2000, p. 239). This compelling image owes something, in terms of form and shading, to the earlier Russian Cubo-Futurist school, exemplified in paintings such as Malevich's The Woodcutter (1912). The edition was probably limited to 1000 copies, as indicated by a code alongside the printer's name in the lower margin. Ephemera of such an impressive nature, inscribed by one of the masters of 20th-century music, is rarely encountered. Seller Inventory # 117745

About this Item: E. Gambart & Co 25 Berners St., London, 1857. Condition: In fine condition. First printing. "The Departure - Second Class" and "The Return - First Class" are a pair of moralistic narrative works, a popular genre in Victorian times, and demonstrate the growing trend towards emigration, particularly to Australia. The Victorian artist Abraham Solomon depicts a family traveling second class to a port where the young boy will go to sea in "The Departure". In "The Return" the boy returns as a successful middle aged squatter in the first class carriage with his son and daughter. Both paintings by Solomon are held in the National Railway Museum UK . Of "The Departure" they write "The painting is a contemporary image of rail travel showing the discomfort of the lower classes traveling in a draughty bench-seated second class carriage. Despite their discomfort this shows how the railways opened up travel to the less wealthy as well as those with money. It also shows how the industry allowed travel nationally and internationally, with the posters in the background advertising passage to Australia highlighting the growing trend of emigration. " (National Railway Museum UK website). The advertising includes ship departures for Port Phillip and Sydney.Published 4th April 1857. Engraved by W.H. Simmons. 26 3/4 x 20 3/4" (image & text) on paper 32 1/4 x 25 1/4". Black & white, as issued. Seller Inventory # 17454

About this Item: Svensk Filmindustri, Stockholm, 1957. Original Swedish illustrated poster for the 1957 film. After exploring his disillusion with religion in the "Faith" trilogy, Bergman took an unusually warm and humanistic view with this film, a quiet reflection on old age, youth, and isolation. An aging medical professor travels to his former university to receive an honorary degree, and finds himself in a euphoric state, moving between the present and an abstract dreamlike muse that embodies his many regrets and disappointments, but ending with a hauntingly beautiful return to the simplicity of his early days.28 x 39 inches. About this Item: (Illustra E. Vidal, Paris, 1922. Dorival, Georges (illustrator). Oblong folio. (11)ff. A deluxe catalogue for the French automaker Panhard & Levassor illustrated with bright color plates depicting their latest models, mounted on pages of heavy tan card. On the facing pages are dramatic views of famous French locales by Georges Dorival, the renowned poster artist. Dorival is best known for his travel posters, and, in the same fashion, these illustrations are meant to inspire the viewer to tour the coastal highways of Provence or the mountain passes of the Pyrenees in the luxurious new Panhard & Levassor automobile. A full-page spread in yellow and sepia depicts the chassis and engine of a vehicle, with classical columns and vines in the background, and another sepia image shows a celebratory drive on the Champs-Élysées in the very first Panhard & Levassor, which was built in 1891. Among the first automobile producers in the world, Panhard & Levassor is credited with developing the front-engine, rear-drive layout that was copied and used in auto manufacturing for many decades. The pages are tied with a gold cord, and bound in illustrated boards with columns, the company's logo, and a landscape printed in gold and black ink across the covers. In the original printed mailing enclosure. A very fine example of a highspot of trade catalogue design. Seller Inventory # 25487

About this Item: Der Beauftrage d. Ev. Kirche f. Mission, Berlin, 1964. Condition: Fine. Poster. Measuring 16.5" x 11.5". Printed in black and red on glazed paper stock. Fine. Poster for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s visit to Cold War Berlin in 1964.In 1964 West Berlin Mayor Willy Brandt invited Dr. King to open the 14th annual cultural festival of the city, which had prepared a triumphant welcome for President John F. Kennedy only one year before. Dr. King used the opportunity to deliver a sermon on universal brotherhood: saying that although the city "stands as a symbol of the division of men on the face of the earth," it was clear that "on either side of the wall are God's children, and no man-made barrier can obliterate that fact."In his only one-and-a-half days in the city, Dr. King visited the Berlin Wall (where only the day before an East German had escaped to the West, provoking a gun battle between U.S. soldiers and East German border guards), opened the city's cultural festival that also included a memorial service for John F. Kennedy, delivered a sermon to more than 20,000 West Berliners at an outdoor arena, and was awarded an honorary degree by the Theological School of the Protestant Church. Most spectacularly, and without a passport, King managed to cross the border at Checkpoint Charlie into East Berlin, where he preached to an enthusiastic crowd in the overflowing St. Mary's Church at Alexander Square about the struggle for civil rights in his own country, bringing greetings from "Christian brothers and sisters" both from the United States and West Berlin. Since so many (especially young) people came to see Dr. King, he had to hold another service in the nearby Sophia Church for almost 2,000 people. Afterwards, he met with students from Humboldt University and church officials before returning to the sector of the city controlled by the Western Allies.Only three months later, he returned to Europe to accept the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo. An exceptionally uncommon poster for Dr. King's important, if often overlooked, appearance in Germany. Seller Inventory # 405253

About this Item: Newburgh, N.Y. [ca. May 1863]., 1863. Broadside, 28 3/4 x 20 1/2 inches. Archivally mounted and matted on acid- free board. Minor loss to top edge, with small remnants of a pasted-over handbill remaining in the top margin but barely touching the top letters, old folds, mild adhesive discoloration at corners, slightly tanned, small vertical closed tear to middle fold at bottom edge. Overall good condition. An exceptionally-rare, and possibly unique surviving example of this large recruiting poster for the Third Regiment in Newburgh, N.Y. Alexander Mann mustered into the Third Regiment, Company "B" as an Ensign in Albany on May 14, 1861, after being recruited from Newburgh or one of several surrounding towns. Less than a year later, Mann was promoted to captain. Third Regiment, Company "B" was the first recruited and first ready for muster in the state of New York during the early months of the Civil War. They fought at Big Bethel, Fort Wagner, Bermuda Hundred, Petersburg, Fort Gilmer, Chapin's Farm, Fort Fisher, and Wilmington, among others, and spent much time protecting Fort Monroe in Virginia during their first enlistment from 1861 to 1863. In May 1863, the unit was re- organized; some current soldiers re- enlisted, and new recruits were mustered. The present broadside emanates from Captain Mann's recruitment efforts for the re- organization and re-enlistment of his regimental company during this time. As compensation to new recruits, Captain Mann is authorized to give a bounty of $250 for a two-year enlistment or $100 for one year. Recruits are invited to visit Captain Mann at 144 Water Street in Newburgh. The Third Regiment would continue to provide valiant service to the Union, although Captain Mann was mustered out at the end of August 1864. A substantial recruitment poster for a proud and active Civil War unit. Seller Inventory # WRCAM 53847
