About this Item: Liturgical Press, United States, 2008. Other book format. Condition: New. Director s ed.. Language: English . Brand New Book. The prayer life of the liturgical choir is essential to its ministry. The rhythm and outline of the choir s rehearsal reflect its depth of music making and experience of God. This resource combines the key components of the choir minister song, Scripture, prayer, reflection, and vocal pedagogy to enhance the work of the group, providing a sacred context in which al rehearsal takes place. Short musical refrains of original composition are easily learned and memorized through specific vocal pedagogy, building technique. These refrains also articulate the text of the prayers, authored to inspire the sense of our connection with God through music. Scripture passages and reflection questions invite choirs to broaden their musical perspective with heightened expression and deepened community. Choir directors and singers will have the necessary elements to frame the choir s gathering with the true purpose of their work the praise of God in song and word. About this Item: Christian Faith Publishing, Inc., 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. For many readers, this book series will introduce people in the Western North Carolina community and tell of their musical experiences, struggles, triumphs, tragedies, hopes, and dreams. For some, it will awaken memories of faces and gathering places where music took center stage from basement blue lights to strobe lights to foot-stomping praises in church. Musical gifts were passed from generation to generation. For others, this journey will connect streetlight dreams with the stage of Carnegie Hall, the Apollo Theater, and the Grand Ole Opry. A few groups and several individuals were fortunate to obtain national recognition. Many performed beyond the borders of the State of North Carolina. Some gave a lifetime of musical service and died before any documented recognition, and others remain dedicated silent partners whose voices and musical gifts continue to ring out, yet are hidden in the melodies of life. About this Item: WestBow Press, United States, 2016. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.-What a shame, - General Moshe whispered to his Corporal of the Guard. -What a shame.- -It seems like just last week, this house of glory was full of music and praise. People were on their knees before God, praying for this community. They were fighting a battle and winning, - Corporal Joabi reminisced. -Yes, they were winning, but they just didn t realize it. The battle was fierce and the enemy had brought in Doubt and Apathy, two of their strongest warriors to infiltrate here. It wasn t long before the pastor was silenced because Doubt had begun to make headway within some of the congregation. When they were not seeing great strides forward, they began to doubt whether the work was worth continuing. The people quit praying and decided that they were not qualified to tell others about our Lord Jesus. They left all witnessing to the pastor and things went south from there. -Some of the other congregations decided that if they made programs for everything, that all would be fine. They started a Monday night dinner program, a youth group that was very liberal in their teaching, and Bible studies that manifested themselves as social events more than a time to study the Word of God. They were more impressed with the social and financial status of the church than they were by the basic foundation of salvation. -Numbers on the membership roll were more important than the number of people delivered from their sin. Profitability of the members was more vital than the righteousness and holiness of the Saints. -It wasn t long before the Christians that attended there began to involve sin into their business practices because it was very lucrative, and as long as it was financially enhancing, it was no longer sin. -Apathy had effectively made his move in the community. Boredom and indifference began to sweep through the churches and town like a wildfire, despite the pastor s attempts to keep the church alive with God s Holy Spirit. The community as a whole had embraced Doubt and Apathy as trusted leaders within the other churches, and the rest is history. Now we have an empty church as a painful monument of defeat.-. About this Item: PM Press. PAPERBACK. Condition: New. 1629631299 Brand New; satisfaction guaranteed. Trade paperback binding. Earthlight Books is a family owned and operated, independent bookstore serving Walla Walla, Washington since 1973. In 1905, representatives from dozens of radical labor groups came together in Chicago to form One Big Union?the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW), known as the Wobblies. The union was a big presence in the labor movement, leading strikes, walkouts, and rallies across the nation. And everywhere its members went, they sang.Their songs were sung in mining camps and textile mills, hobo jungles and flop houses, and anywhere workers might be recruited to the Wobblies? cause. The songs were published in a pocketsize tome called the Little Red Songbook, which was so successful that it?s been published continuously since 1909. In The Big Red Songbook, the editors have gathered songs from over three dozen editions, plus additional songs, rare artwork, personal recollections, discographies, and more into one big all-embracing book.IWW poets/composers strove to nurture revolutionary consciousness. Each piece, whether topical, hortatory, elegiac, or comic served to educate, agitate, and emancipate workers. A handful of Wobbly numbers have become classics, still sung by labor groups and folk singers. They include Joe Hill?s sardonic ?The Preacher and the Slave? (sometimes known by its famous phrase ?Pie in the Sky?) and Ralph Chaplin?s ?Solidarity Forever.? Songs lost or found, sacred or irreverent, touted or neglected, serious or zany, singable or not, are here. The Wobblies and their friends have been singing for a century. May this comprehensive gathering simultaneously celebrate past battles and chart future goals. In addition to the 250+ songs, writings are included from Archie Green, Franklin Rosemont, David Roediger, Salvatore Salerno, Judy Branfman, Richard Brazier, James Connell, Carlos Cortez, Bill Friedland, Virginia Martin, Harry McClintock, Fred Thompson, Adam Machado, and many more.Praise:?This engaging anthology features the lyrics to 250 or so Wobbly songs, rich with references to job sharks, shovel stiffs, capitalist tools, and plutocratic parasites. Wobbly wordsmiths such as the fabled Joe Hill, T-Bone Slim, Haywire Mac, and Richard Brazier set their fighting words to popular tunes of the day, gospel hymns, old ballads and patriotic anthems.??San Francisco Chronicle? This collection, the last major work both of the late ?laborlorist? Archie Green and of the late surrealist poet and labor publisher Franklin Rosemont, should be of great value to folklorists, activists, and singers alike.??Journal of American Folklore? In The Big Red Songbook, the editors have thoughtfully documented twentieth-century Wobbly song in all of its foot-stompin? glory.??International Labor and Working-Class History. About this Item: The Snite Museum of Art, O'Shaughnessy Galleries, University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN, 1980. Wraps. Condition: Good. Mark A. Kelly (Photographer) (illustrator). 161, [5] pages. Illustrations (some in color). Withdrawn from library stamp on title page. Cover has some wear and soiling. Much has been written about Janos Scholz as 'cellist, connoisseur, and collector, praising him for his significant contributions to the arts. The purpose of this exhibition and catalogue clearly transcends the act of praise; both are intended to enlighten. The seed of this exhibition involved paying particular attention to quality and educational merit. Throughout his whole life Scholz had assembled a wealth of fascinating things - prints and drawings, wallpapers and photographs, ceramics and bronzes, coins and jewelry, textiles and carpets, 'cello bows and 'cello music, historical archives and a vast library on music and the arts. Much of this material has passed on to other collections, some private, many more public. Reassembled for this exhibition are some of these objects, as well as some others, brought into a new context. The common denominator of everything in this exhibition, however, is that the provenance includes the name of Janos Scholz. Sopron, where Janos Scholz was born to a family with a long history of music-making, was a crossroads of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, on the border between the two constituent Kingdoms of that Empire. His grandmother was Italian, from Trieste. Janos was the fifth generation of his direct line to take up the cello. So many of his family played instruments that chamber music performing was simply part of his environment. However, his family tradition required him to acquire a profession other than music, one that would be a dependable one, so he attended an agricultural college. When he received his diploma, he handed it to his mother and said he was off to Budapest to be a musician. He entered the Royal Conservatory there and succeeded in entering a professional career. He played in local orchestras and chamber music ensembles. In 1932 he joined the Roth String Quartet, one of the premier string quartets in Europe. The group toured Europe successfully. In 1937 he was offered a position as professor at the Budapest Conservatory, but turned it down. With war-clouds gathering, the quartet accepted an invitation to travel to the United States to play. Scholz, expecting to return home, took only his cello and a suitcase. However, the other three members of the quartet, all Jewish, immediately declared their intention to stay and receive citizenship. The quartet disbanded in 1939 after the tour. Scholz now thought better of returning to Europe, and found he was able to do well as a soloist and chamber musician in New York, in addition to becoming principal cellist in the City Center Opera in New York. He also joined the New York City Symphony, a group of younger musicians formed by Leopold Stokowski and also counting as one of their conductors an unknown newcomer named Leonard Bernstein. When his countryman, the great composer Béla Bartók, came to New York, Scholz often played chamber music at home with him and violinist Josef Szigeti. Scholz entered New York musical life wholeheartedly. He co-founded the Violoncello Society of New York in 1956, and was the organization's president from 1962 to 1967. He was again offered a professorship in Budapest in 1948 but again turned it down. However, he was welcomed back to Hungary for a visit in 1973, where he was honored for his 70th birthday, and was reunited with his family. He played a fine 1731 Stradivarius cello that had previously been owned by Joseph Hollman, and is an avid collector of viola da gamba and cello bows. He has over 200 of them, all meticulously cataloged, authenticated, and minutely described. They were given to the Smithsonian Institution. He continued playing actively to a very late age. This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. Singing occurs in nearly every setting of Amish life. It is a sanctioned pleasure that frames all Amish rituals and one that enlivens and sanctifies both routine and special events, from household chores, road trips by buggy, and family prayer to baptisms, youth group gatherings, weddings, and single girl sings. But because Amish worship is performed in private homes instead of public churches, few outsiders get the chance to hear Amish people sing. Amish music also remains largely unexplored in the field of ethnomusicology. In Why the Amish Sing, D. Rose Elder introduces readers to the ways that Amish music both reinforces and advances spiritual life, delving deep into the Ausbund, the oldest hymnal in continuous use. This illuminating ethnomusicological study demonstrates how Amish groups in Wayne and Holmes Counties, Ohio-the largest concentration of Amish in the world-sing to praise God and, at the same time, remind themselves of their 450-year history of devotion. Singing instructs Amish children in community ways and unites the group through common participation. As they sing in unison to the weighty words of their ancestors, the Amish confirm their love and support for the community. Their singing delineates their common journey-a journey that demands separation from the world and yielding to God s will.By making school visits, attending worship services and youth sings, and visiting private homes, Elder has been given the rare opportunity to listen to Amish singing in its natural social and familial context. She combines one-on-one interviews with detailed observations of how song provides a window into Amish cultural beliefs, values, and norms. Seller Inventory # BTE9781421414652
