Book
Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The recent evolution of western societies has been characterized by an increasing emphasis on information and communication. As the amount of available information increases, however, the user -- worker, student, citizen -- faces a new problem: selecting and accessing relevant information. More than ever it is crucial to find efficient ways for users to interact with information systems in a way that prevents them from being overwhelmed or simply missing their targets. As a result, hypertext systems have been developed as a means of facilitating the interactions between readers and text. In hypertext, information is organized as a network in which nodes are text chunks (e.g., lists of items, paragraphs, pages) and links are relationships between the nodes (e.g., semantic associations, expansions, definitions, examples -- virtually any kind of relation that can be imagined between two text passages). Unfortunately, the many ways in which these hypertext interfaces can be designed has caused a complexity that extends far beyond the processing abilities of regular users. Therefore, it has become widely recognized that a more rational approach based on a thorough analysis of information users' needs, capacities, capabilities, and skills is needed. This volume seeks to meet that need. From a user-centered perspective -- between systems and users -- this volume presents theoretical and empirical research on the cognitive processes involved in using hypertext. In so doing, it illustrates three main approaches to the design of hypertext systems: *cognitive, which examines how users process multilayered hypertext structures; *ergonomical, which explores how users interact with the design characteristics of hardware and software; and *educational, which studies the learning objectives, frequency and duration of hypertext sessions, type of reading activity, and the user's learning characteristics. This volume also tries to provide answers for the questions that have plagued hypertext research: *What is hypertext good for? *Who is hypertext good for? *If it is useful for learning and instruction, then what type? *What particular cognitive skills are needed to interact successfully with a hypertext system? Anyone interested in the fields of computer science, linguistics, psychology, education, and graphic design will find this volume intriguing, informative, and a definitive starting point for future research in the field of hypertext. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Softcover. Condition: Good. Winner-Association of Educational Publishers 2011 Distinguished Achievement AwardFinalist-ForeWord Reviews 2010 Book of the Year AwardBoys in Poverty examines the relationship between poverty and dropout among males by examining a wide range of risk factors, including the absence of role models; the trauma of violence and abuse; peer pressures; issues of belonging and not belonging; culturally driven expectations that boys should work rather than finish school, and cognitive and developmental issues that affect boys learning. In addition, the authors look at community and school system factors, such as poor teachers, unfair or punitive discipline policies, and the absence of differentiated instruction. The book structures these issues into four strands, or categories, of development physical, emotional, cognitive, and social, examining how each is exacerbated by poverty. Additional chapters explore the special problems of sensitive, gay, gifted, and ADHD boys and issues of post-adolescent males beyond high school age. Within each of these areas of development, the authors offer concrete suggestions for keeping boys engaged with school and the learning process.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. The Seven Laws of the Golf Swing is a comprehensive guide to building a powerful and consistent golf swing. Written by leading Tour coach, Nick Bradley, this book distils the golf swing into seven key areas. Each area is explained in detail and supplemented by a range of practice exercises to accelerate the learning process and develop a greater awareness of the feelings and sensations associated with the correct swing motion. In direct contrast to the standard combination of text and high-speed photography normally featured in golf instruction books, one of the unique selling points of The Seven Laws of the Golf Swing is the use of stunning computer-generated imagery to highlight many of the key moves and positions. Exposing many of the myths concerning the golf swing, Bradley also ventures outside the traditional boundaries of the swing itself, to explain how such modern concepts as bio-mechanics and psychology can combine to create a solid all-round game. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condition: new. Anthony Ravielli (illustrator). Paperback. A prominent popular science writer presents simple instructions for 100 illustrated experiments. Memorable, easily understood experiments illuminate principles related to astronomy, chemistry, physiology, psychology, mathematics, topology, probability, acoustics, other areas. To Martin Gardner, seeing is not just believing - it is understanding. This fundamental rule has made him one of the most successful teachers and popularizers of science in America. With the simple instructions in this book and a few commonly available household objects, you or your child can easily learn even the most difficult scientific principles by directly experiencing how they work. Gardner shows you how to re-create classic experiments with easily obtainable objects. Using just a flashlight, a pocket mirror, and a bowl of water, you can demonstrate the color composition of white light just as Newton did 300 years ago. With cardboard, colored paper, and wax paper you can perform "Meyer's experiment" with complementary colors. You need only a playing card, a spool, and a thumbtack to demonstrate Bernoulli's principle of aerodynamics. A soda bottle filled with water, a few paper matches, and a toy balloon elucidate Pascal's law governing pressure in liquids. And two drinking glasses, some matches, and a piece of wet blotting paper re-create a famous experiment, first performed in 1650 in Magdeburg, Germany, that dramatically reveals the force of ordinary atmospheric pressure. In language simple enough to be easily understood by an 11-year-old, yet technically accurate and informative enough to benefit adults, and aided by Anthony Ravielli's clear illustrations, Gardner presents a splendid practical course in basic science and mathematics. While your child perplexes and delights his or her friends with a series of 100 amusing tricks and experiments, he or she is learning the principles of astronomy, chemistry, physiology, psychology, general mathematics, topology, probability, geometry, numbers, optics (light), gravity, static electricity, mechanics, air hydraulics, thermodynamics (heat), acoustics (sound), and inertia. This is a perfect refresher course for adults as well as an ideal introduction to science for youngsters. "The experiments are all clearly explained and unusually well illustrated." - Booklist. A prominent popular science writer presents simple instructions for 100 illustrated experiments. Memorable, easily understood experiments illuminate principles related to astronomy, chemistry, physiology, psychology, mathematics, topology, probability, acoustics, other areas.
