People's movement in the princely states of Orissa in the wider context of the nationalist movement: a case study of the Nilgiri state/A.C. Pradhan. 16. Freedom struggle in the Banaganapalle state/K. Maddaiah. Bibliography. Index. People's movements in the princely states forms an important aspect in the history of modern India with 45 per cent of the land and 24 per cent of the people the princely states played second fiddle to the imperial dictates. From the nineteenth century till they joined Indian Union in 1947 8 mostly they lived under the umbrella of the British. They never took serious measures or introduced steps for radical transformation of the states. There was no coherent place for the princes in the British imperial ideology. When the princes were using different strategies to retain centralized power the people fought against the princes to demand for responsible government and later to force them to join Indian Union. This was an absorbing encounter and an incredible story. In fact not many books are there to cover as many states discussing the situation in the princely states. In fact the growth of nationalism in those autocratic princely states was difficult slow and painstaking. The present book tries to answer some of these issues. This book broadly covers number of princely states including Hyderabad Mysore Travancore Jammu and Kashmir Gwalior and small states like Nilgiri in Orissa Banaganapalle in Andhra Pradesh. Simultaneously along with anti colonial struggle the people's movements in princely states symbolizes their struggle against the feudal and autocratic princes which helped in the ushering of Indian Union once India got independence. 246 pp. Seller Inventory # 50676

Has it been fulfilled? Did the constitution suit our genius and ethos? Has it been successful in satisfying the needs and aspirations of the people? Are changes imperative and, if so, what should be the quantum and direction of change? How can the proposed changes be brought about? What can be the mechanism? How to attract better quality of men to politics? What should be the future shape of Union-State relations and the nature of decentralisation to grassroots levels? Is there a case for some kind of Presidential or other system? Should there not be 50 or 60 States of equal size in India? How to decentralise economic power and planning processes? These and many other very fundamental questions in regard to our polity and the Constitution have been raised and answered in the articles, specially written for this volume in a most convincing and congent manner by the distinguished contributors. It emerges that the case for a review of the Constitution is unassailable and demand for reforms widespread. The book is bound to further the national debate and lead to concrete results. 360 pp. Seller Inventory # 50270

Genetically modified foods the consumer's concern/S. R. Khanna. The use of genetic engineering techniques for producing transgenic plants results in the transfer of desirable traits across the species barrier. This has led to a worldwide debate on a range of ethical moral and social considerations associated with the risks and benefits of this technique to man and the environment. The world has literally become a battleground involving scientists politicians policy makers journalists industry representatives farmers and consumers with a polarization of society into proponents and opponents of biotechnology. Genetically modified foods are being labelled Frankenstein foods with accusations that the technique challenges the role of God the sanctity of nature the ownership of life forms etc. However it is equally true that the achievements of the green revolution are proving insufficient for feeding India's teeming millions. Biotechnological interventions can play a vital role by not only increasing crop productivity but also taking care of the increasing threat of biotic and abiotic stresses on crop plants. This book is based on four workshops (Stakeholders dialogue on agricultural biotechnology biosafety and economic implications) on genetically modified plants organized by Teri. It outlines the relevance of plant biotechnology to Indian agriculture and the im. Seller Inventory # 60009

It is widely accepted now that to bring about economic transformation any country requires the device of industrialization for which entrepreneurship vehicle is a pivotal factor. It has now been established that entrepreneurship can be cultivated contrary to the earlier belief that entrepreneurs are born and can never be made. Therefore there is an ardent need to encourage entrepreneurship in the country. This is only possible when the right kind of climate is created through favourable policy measure and provision of training and guidance to individuals with entrepreneurial aptitude. The present book is a collection of some of the papers presented during a 2 day National Seminar (Sponsored by AICTE) on Thirty first Aug. First Sept. 98. The Seminar aimed at creating an awareness about the need for entrepreneurial development in a developing country like India and its impact on the economic development of a nation. The book has papers presented by several eminent scholars and intellectuals who have done extensive research in the field of entrepreneurship. The articles have been slightly edited to suit the needs of the book and extensive care has been taken to see that the essence of the article has remained the same. 212 pp. Seller Inventory # 67468

About this Item: 2015. Hardcover. Condition: New. 356 ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- Climate change has emerged as a major challenge to our agriculture, indeed to the management of our economy as a whole. The immediate problems that our farmers face relate to intra-seasonal variability of rainfall, extreme events and unseasonal rains. These aberrations cause heavy losses to our crops every year. There is therefore an urgent necessity for us to devise appropriate adaptation and mitigation strategies for gearing up our efforts to evolve climateresilient crop varieties, cropping patterns and water management practices for ensuring food security, enhancing livelihood opportunities and contributing to economic stability at the national level. Robust mechanisms to strengthen interactions between agricultural scientists and our farmers and also ensure better convergence between research and developmental needs. The research papers in the proceedings of National Seminar on Water Management and Climatic Smart Agriculture is reviewing the current climate change policy responses fall short of addressing the realities of poor rural farmers who are the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and paint an alternative way forward by defining innovative techno-economic-eco-resilient strategies to overcome the gaps of contemporary mitigation and adaptation programmes in agriculture by bringing to the fore the actual priorities, needs, and knowledge of farming communities themselves and suggest suitable recommendations to farming community and Government organizations to look far and wide in our agricultural research system and will succeed in delivering the national goals on agricultural productivity whatever be the odds.
