About this Item: GB Publishing.org, United Kingdom, 2013. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Surrey Life magazine, May 2015, TV presenter Juliette Foster: She writes with the lightness of petals falling on water yet underscoring the mildness is an honesty that surprises with its intensity . In this first collection, English poet Mary Pargeter re-visits her childhood, loss of innocence, states of love, heartbreak and death, and reflects, with admirable frankness, on those universal rites of passage common to us all. The first poems present an idyllic childhood running free in the exquisite landscapes near Selborne, immortalised by the 18th Century naturalist Gilbert White FRS. That blessed landscape, now part of the South Downs National Park, is still referred to as Gilbert White country. With superb views across the South Downs, the rambling house of her early years had been built for entertaining, but is now the family s no-nonsense working market garden. Sadly, to the child s dawning awareness come warning signs that all is not well. Her father has not long returned from four years in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. The experience has left inevitable scars. Tiny and intelligent, she observes and struggles to understand. As she grows up, next come poems dealing with young love - emotional intensity, gradual decline and the trauma of loss to which she herself admits a contribution. Dealing with grief contributes to the third part of her collection. In her early 20s, Mary s parents both died. Thus she must tackle another kind of loss, as well as anger and other raw emotions, finally coming to terms with her life s unavoidable patterns. REVIEWS - Professor Carol Rumens, Guardian Books Online Poem of the Week blog: I have felt engaged with the work, and responsive to its emotional charge. Jay Ramsay, Caduceus Journal: She lets detail speak, often exquisitely, through things as they are; there is no attempt to escape through fantasy. Female First online magazine, Lucy Walton interview with Mary Pargeter. Angus Morris (RAF retd): My human experience has been enriched by reading these poems. It is up to you if you are open to enrich yours. Full reviews/interviews are on: The Author - In 1948 English poet Mary Pargeter was born at home in the Hampshire hamlet of Newton Valence. Her idyllic country childhood was marred when, in 1956, the family moved to Surrey and the child unhappily experienced a suburban life, with pavements lit by street lamps. In her poetry she reflects on that childhood, heartbreak, early loves, disappointments and the entry into adulthood and at last understanding. She neither married nor had children. A child of the 60s, Mary flourished in art school and became a successful graphic designer. Seller Inventory # AAV9780957297043

About this Item: Memoirs Publishing. Paperback. Condition: New. 240 pages. Dimensions: 9.1in. x 6.1in. x 0.6in.At the age of 95, Bill Malins still remembers growing up on an Oxfordshire farm in the 1920s, where he would help with the haymaking, steer a horse-drawn harrow, milk a cow and ride sheep for entertainment. Amid the happiness there were moments of tragedy. There was the loss of his baby sister to peritonitis when Bill was seven years old. A couple of years later he had to stand by as the farm was burned to the ground, taking it with his favourite horse and dog. Bill would cycle each day to the local RAF base to deliver milk, often stopping to gaze at the aircraft overhead. By the time he was 22 years old he had become an RAF pilot himself. He went on to serve his country nobly during the Second World War as a reconnaissance flyer, seeing action in France, Germany and Holland, risking his life for his country, earning a Distinguished Flying Cross and rising to the rank of Wing Commander. Bill Malins was one of the first officers to set foot on Sicilian soil when the Allies invaded the island in 1943, and the same year he narrowly survived the deadly doodlebug which struck the Strand, killing more than 80 people. Bill was there when the Allies crossed the Rhine in 1945 in the closing stages of the war, and his squadron was one of the first inside the gates of Belsen when the notorious concentration camp was liberated. After completing a post-war world tour with the RAF Directorate of Accident Prevention, Bill gave up the airborne life in 1952 to return to the farm, where he has lived and worked ever since. About this Item: Pen Sword Books Ltd, United Kingdom, 2010. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. Harley Boxall was awarded his RAF wings on 3 October 1936 and was posted to 40 Squadron flying Hawker Hinds. On 1 April1937 he was posted to Bircham Newton in Norfolk to train with 206 Squadron which was a General Reconnaissance and Training unit equipped with the Avro Anson. He then joined 62 Squadron shortly after it was formed and received its first Blenheim in February 1938. During the summer of 1939 and because of increasing political tension in Europe, a decision was taken to reinforce the Far East Air Force with two squadrons of Blenheims. The urgency of the situation required that the aircraft, from 34 and 62 Squadrons, be flown out to their final destination at Tengah in Singapore. It took a total fifty flying hours to arrive. On Thursday 4 April 1940 a signal came through from Air Headquarters that aircraft were to make a reconnaissance of Sabang Harbour and photograph any shipping therein. Five Blenheims took-off from Alor Star at 1030 and on leaving Sabang behind at 1300 hours, Boxall climbed to gain height for the long return sea crossing. He had gained an altitude of 9,000 ft. when, some forty miles from the coast of Sumatra, the oil pressure of his starboard engine fell to zero. Within a minute or so, the port engine seized and he was flying in silence. After a successful crash landing on the sea the crew waded through the coral, heedless of the cuts inflicted, and fell exhausted on the beach. The island was roughly two miles long by one mile across, rising steeply from the shore to a height of about four hundred feet and covered with thick jungle down to the water s edge. By the morning of the third day they had been forty-eight hours without food. They wondered along the beach and collected more wood and ate unripe plums . It was not until the sixth day that a small native boat came silently round the edge of the mangrove heading for the beach, eventually rescuing the crew. In September 1940 Harley was promoted to flight lieutenant and given command of the RAF Station at Alor Star in Malaya. 62 Squadron flew on what Harley later described, as the first and only operation that it carried out as a unit, when he lead eleven Blenheims to bomb the Japanese invasion fleet. Against the odds, all of 62 Squadron s aircraft and crews returned to Alor Star safely but approximately half-an-hour after they had landed and while the Blenhiems were still being rearmed and refuelled, the Japanese attacked the airfield. A force of about twenty-seven enemy aircraft bombed Alor Star completely destroying at least three Blenheims and rendering another three damaged and unserviceable. As the Japanese invasion spread Harley finally escaped from Java on 2 March aboard the Tung Song , it was one of the last ships to leave.Harley Boxall is now deceased. Joe Bamford is an ex-air traffic controller and a keen aviation historian. He lives in Keighly. Seller Inventory # PAS9781848841499

About this Item: Pen Sword Books Ltd, United Kingdom, 2007. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. September 1941 approval was given for the formation of two long-range Air-Sea Rescue squadrons. No 279 Squadron was formed at Bircham Newton in Norfolk. In the period leading up to the formation of the squadron there had been much work done in relation to air-dropped survival equipment such as the Lindholme Dinghy Dropping Gear, the Bircham Barrel and the Thornaby Bag. These contained such items as water, food, first-aid kits and distress signals. 279 was the first squadron to employ the airborne lifeboat, which was carried beneath the bellies of the portly Hudson. In January 1942 a practical boat, fitted with oars, sails and engines was put into production with the intention of slinging it under the bomb bay of the Hudson and to drop it by parachute. In October 1944 the Squadron re-equipped with Warwick Mk I aircraft moved to Thornaby in the NE of England. By now its ASR net was cast wide and there were detachments at Tain, Fraserburgh, Wick and Banff (all in northern Scotland) and Reykjavik. Seller Inventory # PAS9781844154821

B&w photographs, maps. Mick Ensor "learned to fly in New Zealand and joined 500 Squadron at Bircham Newton, Norfolk in 1941. Having survived several dangerous operations in Blenheims over the North Sea and the French coast, Mick first earned fame on his second Hudson operation in January, 1942, attacking three German ships at mast height. During 1942, he hunted U-boats over the Atlantic from Stornoway and then took part in Operation Torch, the Allied invasion of North Africa. Mick destroyed U-259 on 15 November in one of the war's most dramatic attacks. After six months at Coastal Command HQ, sharing his front-line experience with experts conducting the vital Battle of the Atlantic, Mick returned to operations with 224 Squadron in July 1943. After the war, Mick flew 200 mission in the Berlin Airlift and served for a couple of years with the US Navy, flying patrols off the Russian and Japanese coasts during the Korean War. He flew jets and gliders with equal aplomb before returning home to New Zealand in 1967." Book is Fine. "During the war, Canadian squadrons flew hundred of operations over the North Atlantic, the English Channel, the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay. Such operations included reconnaissance flights as well as shipping strikes to Norway, the Netherlands and the French coast. The Canadians proved themselves admirably despite heavy losses - some of the heaviest of the war. From a force of some 4,000 officers and airmen and 270 aircaft at the beginning of the war, the RCAF had within four months doubled in strength with 8,287 officers and airmen, and 14 operational squadrons in Canada. This comprehensive study covers every success achieved by Canadian squadrons listed in Coastal Command's records for World War II - including attacks on U-Boats and enemy controlled vessels. Each operation is reported in meticulous detail, from the time of departure, current weather, hours flown and crew involved to a description of the action itself." Book is Fine.
