About this Item: George Routledge and Sons, London, 1885. Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. First Edition. Somewhat loose in the original blue decorative cloth which is a little rubbed and soiled with small coffee stain to front cover and a 3" fray to the outer hinge at the head of the spine. Internally clean with 10pp of adverts for Routledge's Railway Library at the rear. A short proto-symbolist novel garlanded with tropes invoking dalliance, adultery and death. Somewhat unevenly constructed to allow for hints of sadism, somnambulism and a haunting. The tell-tale painting in the attic pre-dates 'Dorian Gray' by at least five years and page 156 bears the legend 'It is always the woman's fault'. . Seller Inventory # 002335
