Gender and development Role of NGOs/Pallavi S. Kusugal and H.H. Uliveppa. Index. Ensuring gender parity has become a great challenge for the modern world. Gender equality forms part of development strategy in many countries of the world including India. When both men and women have equal access to services and resources enjoy equal rights and get equal opportunities to develop skills and capabilities then the development of the country is fast and balanced. Despite considerable efforts towards advocacy and awareness of gender equality and launching of various programmes for welfare of women gender discrimination in India remains pervasive in many dimensions of life. Though the nature and magnitude of discrimination against women vary from country to country in no part of the world gender parity has been achieved completely in legal social and economic terms. Gender gaps are widespread in respect of access to and control of resources economic opportunities and political voice. Women are still exploited discriminated against and subjected to harassment and violence. In this perspective the present volume covering various dimensions and strategies of gender development is highly topical. The volume has emerged from the research papers contributed by social scientists and academicians from different parts of India focusing on specific gender related issues. Both primary and secondary data have been used by the authors to analyse the problems and conclude with suggestions. The main themes which the volume covers are agriculture and gender development micro credit financing and women empowerment role of Self Help Groups (SHGs) and NGOs in socio economic development of women and health and education of women. The volume will provide valuable information and inputs to academicians researchers NGOs and government agencies and functionaries. 260 pp. Seller Inventory # 67493

About this Item: New Century Publications, 2008. Hardcover. Condition: New. In India, policies and programmes of the government at different levels cover various dimensions and strategies of gender development. Over the years, efforts have been made to empower women socially, economically and politically. However, due to lack of synergy and coordination, the achievements are not satisfactory. It is imperative that an integrated policy and strategy be formulated to address economic, social and political issues related to women along with the requisite programmes and schemes. Though India has created protective legislations for women, the enactments have not been easy to implement. The vastness of the country, the scattered nature of women workers, their lack of education and legal literacy, the indifferent attitude of government bureaucracy have all contributed to the continuing vulnerability of women. This is true not only of rural unorganised women, but also of urban women workers. Although the Constitutional commitments to women find reflections in the planning process, legislations, policies and programmes of the Central and State Governments yet the current socio-economic status of women is unsatisfactory in terms of almost all important indicators of human development. This book has emerged from the research papers contributed by social scientists and academicians from different parts of India, focusing on specific gender-related issues. The volume will provide valuable information and inputs to academicians, researchers, NGOs, and government agencies and functionaries. It contains 42 research contributions related to women issues. These contributions have been categorised into the following 6 Theme Parts. (a) Health, Nutrition and Fertility of Women, (b) Education and Training of Women, (c) Employment of Women, (d) Self-help Groups (SHGs) and Empowerment of Women, (e) Problems of Rural Women and (f) Women, Media, Politics and Human Rights. Women constitute almost half of the world population and they play a vital role in shaping the society. However in majority of countries they continue to face discrimination with regards to access to education. This low level of education not only has a negative impact on women's lives but also on their families lives and on their country socio economic development. Education is key because educated women are more likely to know what social community and health services including family planning are available and to have the confidence to use them. Education becomes an instrumental asset for low income rural women only when other assets or opportunities are also available. Improvement of women's access to education and particularly their access to non formal training and education needs to be done in conjunction with improving their access to other assets and opportunities. This book describes the role of education in empowering rural women. It analyses various development schemes for women's education and their impacts on rural women. It is hoped that this book will be of great interest to all those interested/engaged in the education and development of rural women. 286 pp. Seller Inventory # 61902

(5 Articles in Hindi) There is a considerable ambiguity about the nature and status of women in Indian society. On the one hand, she is believed to represent power and evokes both fear and reverence. On the other hand, she is largely appreciated for her beauty and hardwork. In traditional India, women were supposed to be supreme in the household domains, whereas in the public domain men were supposed to be supreme. A woman is identified as a mother a wife, daughter-n-law or a daughter but she is not identified as an independent person. Women constitute almost half of the population, perform nearly two-third of its work hours receive one tenth of the world s income and own less than one hundredth of the world property. The book Women in Mountains: Continuity and Change is a modest attempt to present a synthesized form of the studies on women. The paper/articles are general, analytical and empirical in nature and have dealt with various issues releated to women in mountain region. The book provides useful and interesting papers/articles on various important issues pertaining to women and gender issues which will be very useful for the students, research scholars and the learned communities working on the aforesaid issue. Cooperation therefore means an obligation towards all families in the village community and the development of resources and of social services in the common interest of the village as a whole. There are widespread movements of capital humans goods and ideas across the globe resulting in transformations in the quality of socio cultural life of the common men and women of all societies. As a concept and an empirical process globalisation has been attracting much social scientific attention in recent years so much so that the word has attained the notoriety of being a buzzword. There is a tendency to look at such overarching and divergent processes of globalisation from the narrower perspective of capital flow from the North to the south. Though this volume does not aim to be a corrective to such perspective it is surely different from it. Most contributions to this volume closely examine the nature of globalisation as a very ancient historical phenomenon and how its structures and processes have changed in the present avatar of globalisation. There are convincing arguments on the reverse direction of the global flow which otherwise goes unnoticed by many e.g. globalisation may originate from below (quoted from Prof. Yogendra Singh's foreword). Through contributions from researchers from divergent disciplinary backgrounds this volume adds hitherto unexplored dimensions to the discourse of globalisation. As it contains articles written in lucid and jargon free language the volume makes an understandable reading for teachers students and all those who are interested in knowing the socio cultural reality of present day world. 448 pp. Seller Inventory # 61173
