About this Item: [Austin, Tx, 1905. [8],258pp. manuscript. Folio. Light soiling, confined primarily to exterior leaves. Some light age toning. With authorial corrections throughout. Very good. In a brown half morocco box. Original draft of the novel, written when Clint Brown was an undergraduate at the University of Texas. Brown's conceit is that he has uncovered a manuscript written by Robert Blalock, a firsthand account by a young man who joins the Texas Revolution under the protection of an experienced backwoodsman, Ramrod Jones. It was published in 1905 by the Saalfield Publishing Co. in New York. This draft differs from the published version in various ways, and includes corrections by the author as well as the main draft. Clinton Giddings Brown went on to become District Attorney of San Antonio (1911-13) and then mayor of San Antonio (1913- 16). He continued to practice law until he retired, and published a book about his law cases entitled YOU MAY TAKE THE WITNESS (1955). OCLC lists only fifteen copies of the printed version of the present work. OCLC 2619662 (ref). SMITH B1066. Seller Inventory # WRCAM40640

About this Item: The Saalfield Publishing Company, Akron, Ohio; Chicago; New York, 1910. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. (Toy and Movable Books) A TRIP TO THE NORTH POLE: A STORY OF ADVENTURE IN THE ARCTIC by William G. Turner. Akron, Ohio; Chicago; New York: The Saalfield Publishing Company, [1910]. FIRST EDITION. 4to - 10-3/4" x 8-1/8". Red cloth backed, color pictorial glazed paper covered board front and plain uncovered board back with light wear to the extremities and a brass brad paper fastener through the book at the center of the spine holding the separated text block in place for what remains a very nice copy of the book. Plain endpapers with a name which appears to have been written by a child on FFE. The story is about a group of intrepid explorers who set off to be the first to find the North Pole; many adventures follow including an unexpected six month stay among a colony of natives who live in ice houses while the explorers await the return of spring, and with it, the return of sunlight. The book features four red, black and white illustrations on 3/4 length pages; each of these are hinged onto a page that when lifted, reveals a striking chromolithograph backdrop with attached chromolithograph telescoping three dimensional scene; the four pages revealed when the hinged pages are lifted feature green, black and white illustrations; all pop-up scenes are complete and function as intended. Text block's original staple binding is intact and holding firmly; as previously stated, the text block is no longer attached to the covers. The condition of the book is VERY GOOD. About this Item: Saalfield Publishing Co Akron, Ohio 1906, 1906. Early Printing. Original decorative wrappers, octavo, 7 1/2 by 4 1/2 inches, 120 numbered pages, 8 pages of ads. An uncommon cocktail recipe book by Kappeler, the head bartender at the Holland House Hotel in New York City. First published in 1895 by Merriam Company, and then likely first published by Saalfield in 1900. This is an uncommon printing in wrappers. From the preface: "The recipes contained in this book are for the proper mixing of all kinds of drinks, such as Absinthe, Cocktails, Cups, Crustas, Cobblers, Coolers, Egg Noggs, Fixes, Fizzes, Flips, Juleps, Lemonades, Punches, Poussé Cafe, Frozen Beverages, etc. The formulas are simple, practical, and easy to follow and are especially intended for use in first-class Hotels, Clubs, Buffets, and Barrooms, where, if adopted and concocted according to directions given, they will be entirely satisfactory to the caterer and pleasing to the consumer, the latter of whom will immediately notice a marked improvement in his favorite beverages." David Wondrich and Robert Hess have referred to the 1895 printing of this title as the first printed reference for the Old Fashioned, and Ted Haigh mentioned it in Vintage Spirits & Forgotten Cocktails as the original reference for the Widow's Kiss. Very Good, nice vintage bookstore sticker at lower front panel, some darkening to wraps, light stain at lower rear cover. Seller Inventory # 37242

About this Item: The Saalfield Publishing Co. (c.1917, 1907), Akron/New York/Chicago, 1917. Stiff wrappers. Condition: Very Good+. Illustrated by George McManus, Albert George Carmichael (illustrator). [moderate edgewear to covers, internally Fine except for the expected and inevitable age-toning to the pages]. (cartoon strips and panels) A remarkably well-preserved example of this rare vintage coloring book (OCLC reports only four library holdings), containing mostly undated reprints of George McManus's newspaper comic strip, "The Newlyweds," generally considered the first American "family" strip. Created by the then 20-year-old McManus for Joseph Pulitzer's New York World in 1904, the strip ran for twelve years, at various times as both a daily and Sunday feature; when McManus left the World for the New York American (a Hearst paper), he began a new strip called "Their Only Child" ("a perfect clone," in the words of one historian), while "The Newlyweds" continued in the World, drawn by Albert George Carmichael. Dating the strips in the book would be a major research task, not helped by the mishmash of dates provided: the 1917 date is on the front cover; the title page reads: "Copyrighted 1907 by the Press Publishing Co."; and several of the individual color strips bear a 1916 copyright date, also credited to the "Press Publishing Co. (N.Y. World)." All appear to all be Sunday strips, although some are in B&W (for "coloring-in" purposes, I suppose) and others in color, and despite McManus's sole by-line on the title page, Carmichael's work is also well-represented. (On quite a few, either McManus's or Carmichael's signature is visible; generally speaking, the color versions appear to be by Carmichael and the B&W ones by McManus.) To my eyes, the 1917 publication date signals the publishers' attempt to wring a few more drops of revenue out of a feature that had ended the previous year; the seemingly anomalous 1907 copyright date would seem related to the "birth date" of baby Snookums (yes, that was his name), who was introduced into the strip in that year. [Either that or it's just a "holdover" from an earlier book incarnation, "The Newlyweds and Their Baby," published the same year by the New York World, but not to be confused with the present volume.] But relax: it's not so much a collection (let alone a chronicle) as it is a sampler of "The Newlyweds," and as such is utterly charming. McManus's most successful and best-remembered strip, "Bringing Up Father" (aka "Jiggs & Maggie"), debuted in 1913 and had an amazing 87-year run -- outliving its creator by 46 years!.
